by Anna Carlson
Final week; ends May 3
Community & studio Galleries
Says Mary Abbe, Minneapolis Star Tribune Art Critic,
"Adept at dyeing and printing, Carlson uses the words "No" and "Subject to Change" as feminist and existential statements on fabric and clothing. By changing her color palette she deftly alters the psychological and visual implications of her designs." >>MORE

Dreams & Memories: Contemporary Tapestries by Aino Kajaniemi Joan Mondale Gallery June 12 - August 16
Thursday June 12 Opening Reception begins: 6 pm Artist Talk: 7 pm Free and open to the public Co-sponsored by the American Swedish Institute
"My textiles are my way of thinking. I want to produce the objects of my wonderings into something concrete, so that I could understand them....The subjects of my works usually originate from the inmost of a human being: sorry, joy, uncertainty, guilt, tenderness and memories."-Aino Kajaniemi
Finland's 2010 Textile Artist of the Year makes her United States debut at Textile Center. Kajaniemi's bold and dramatic tapestries, open likened to sketching or a form of line etching with fibers, have been shown in solo and collective shows throughout Europe, and she is well represented in Scandinavian art collections.
Coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Finnish immigrants in the United States, this program will be part of a larger, Twin Cities-wide celebration of Finnish heritage and culture: FinnFest 2014. Textile Center's exhibition will complement corresponding Finnish art exhibits at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the American Swedish Institute. Support provided by Common Strands.
