May is Bike Month!

Celebrate Bike to Work and School Day on May 16! Fourteen Bike to Work Day breakfast stations will be set up by bike-loving organizations around the county, ready to feed you breakfast and give you high fives along your way.

Check out this year's station map, join the event on Facebook to get all the latest details, and don't forget to visit Ithaca Carshare at the Pavilion in Thompson Park for a tasty breakfast bite and flashing safety light. If you are the 40th person to our station, receive a solar bike light!

Job Opportunity

A new active transportation advocacy group is forming to help the Ithaca area develop a safe and prosperous active transportation infrastructure and culture, and build on our strengths as a leader in alternative, eco-friendly modes of transport.

The group is looking for its first director right now!

Register for the email list to stay in touch.

This group is a project of the Center for Transformative Action.

Inspiration for your Commute
The run commuter brings the self-propelled commute to a whole new level!

"That's right. He runs to work and back most days rather than drive. He's not alone. And he's telling a story that's drawing readers, participants and even sponsors on his blog, theruncommuter.com.

Woiderski, 37, is a paralegal downtown (Atlanta) and longtime long-distance runner. He started running to work a few years ago after a wreck totaled his car. Rather than buy a new one right away, he started jogging from his then-home in West End. A married father of two boys and now living near Decatur, Woiderski runs into Atlanta most days, more than 5 miles each way..."

Happy Earth Day!
Whether you carshare for convenience, cost, or those warm fuzzy eco-vibes it gives you, there's no ignoring the positive impacts carsharing has on our environment!

Each carshare car replaces 15 private vehicles! At last count, there were 46 carshares in North America with 15,603 vehicles. You do the math!

Ithaca Carshare members have collectively reported planning to sell or avoid buying over 450 vehicles.

A 30 minute commute equates to over ten hours of sitting in a car each month. Carshare members are more likely to bike, walk, share a ride, or take the bus.

Carshare members reduce their car usage by as much as 50% by combining multiple trips per reservation.

Ithaca Carshare's fleetwide fuel economy improved by 26% in 2013 and is 20% higher than the national average.

Kids, elders and everyone in between can enjoy the safety and exhilaration of car-free streets, along with activities such as bike art, sign art, tai chi, Taiko drumming, a cappella singing, a pop-up children's forest, Zumba dancing, hula hooping, live music from El Rumbon, double dutch jump roping, Beats Alive!, "Jane Jacobs" walking tours, free ice cream by Dennis!, and popcorn. More opportunities include a youth bike rodeo and helmet give-away, bike repair and advice stations, bus bike-rack practice, and transportation chats with roaming elected officials.

Individuals or groups can even adopt part of the street, chalk some art, create a mini park, or share something else fun or creative. Ithaca Earth Day 2014 and Get Your Green Back Tompkins will be celebrated with more music, dance, information and activities next door to the Ithaca High School parking lot hub, outside Boynton Middle School.

Volunteer help is still needed! E-mail us to lend a hand with scooping ice cream, or visit Streets Alive! online for more volunteering details.

Ithaca Carshare

For years, Ithaca Carshare has been helping Ithacans choose to bike, walk and use the bus for everyday trips, and providing fuel-efficient vehicles for backup. We've been helping to reduce the money that leaves Ithaca by offering a less expensive way to use a car only when you need it, and created the Easy Access plan as a more affordable option for folks on low incomes.

We'd love your help in doing all this, and are ecstatic that we can now thank you with a tax-deductible receipt!

Send your tax-deductible donation check to Ithaca Carshare at PO Box 418, Ithaca, NY 14851-0418, click below, or contact us for other ways to donate.
