Redwood City After School Sports:

Meet Michael Smith, Recreation Coordinator

Michael was born and raised in Belmont, CA and graduated from Carlmont High School in 2008.  Michael was a 4 year athlete for Carlmont in both Basketball and Golf. After high school, he attended San Jose State University where he graduated in 2013 with a Degree in Recreation Management and a minor in Business.  In the summer of 2011, Michael began his tenure as an intern with Redwood City Parks and Recreation Department and has recently earned the position of After School Sports Coordinator though his strong work ethic and passion for providing athletic opportunities for our youth.

"Growing up I loved playing sports with my neighborhood friends. After school, we would play every sport; basketball, baseball, football, hockey, and soccer until the sun went down. I think that is where my current passion for youth sports comes from. I remember all of those fun times we had playing sports and it still puts a smile on my face. The fact that I help to provide the kids of Redwood City those same memories and experiences is really awesome. The best part of After School Sports is watching the kids play and seeing the joy and excitement that it brings them. I love seeing the kids in their natural element -having fun with their friends!  After School Sports is such a unique and valuable program, and I feel extremely privileged to be a part of it. "

Benefits of Sports Participation: A message from the National Academy of Athletics

Our sports program has a myriad of partners that help are athletes achieve success throughout the year. The National Academy of Athletics partners with After School Sports to provide us with quality coaches clinics, sports skills clinics, and camps. NAOA

Founder and CEO, Aaron Locks believes that "there really is no better teaching tool for kids than participation in team sports. Through their participation, kids learn to deal with adversity, deal with success and failure, and how to become successful both on and off the court. Sports are really just another form of play. By encouraging your child to play or compete, we are helping them to form a healthy love of being active.  I suggest starting your child off in a camp environment - let them learn the rules, the basics and then they will feel more confident before they head into competitions or games.

Our goal with the National Academy of Athletics is to help kids learn to fall in love with their chosen sport. We have found that kids who love the game, will improve and want to learn and compete even more. Through inspiration, motivation, and perspiration we strive to bring out a positive change in each and every child."
