Healthy Futures Announces New Advisory Council Members
The Healthy Futures project is honored and pleased to announce two new members of its Advisory Council. They are Benjamin Shain, MD, PhD and Victor Schwartz, MD.
Dr. Shain is project liaison for the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and is in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NorthShore University HealthSystem. He graduated Harvard College magna cum laude in biochemical sciences and completed the Medical Scientist Training Program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, earning an MD and a PhD. His board certifications are in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry with clinical specialization in mood and anxiety disorders.
Dr. Schwartz is the Medical Director at The Jed Foundation , which focuses on suicide prevention among college aged youth, and he is Associate Clinical Professor at NYU Medical School, He has over 20 years of experience as a psychiatrist working in college mental health. He was medical director of NYU's Counseling Service, established a counseling center at Yeshiva University and was most recently University Dean of Students there. He was an original member of the American Psychiatric Association's Presidential Task Force on College Mental Health and co-chair of the APA working group on legal issues in college mental health.

Adolescent and Young Adult Male Health, A Review,
was published
in yesterday's August 12, 2013 online edition of the journal Pediatrics. The article is a comprehensive overview of the health risk factors for adolescent and young adult males and also includes recommendations for clinically relevant best practices. The abstract can be found here.
The article is co-authored by Dr. David Bell, MD, MPH, Dr. David Breland, MD, MPH and Mary Ott, MD, MA. Drs. Bell and Breland serve on the Ensuring Health Futures Advisory Council.
The Lancet, July 2, 2013
Incidence and clearance of oral human papillomavirus infection in men: the HIM cohort study, appeared in the July 2, 2013 online version of The Lancet. The study found that single men and male smokers have a higher risk of cancer linked oral HPV. The abstract can be found here and popular reporting on the study can be found here.

Other Emerging Adolescent and Young Adult Male (AYA) Initiatives
Compared to girls, research shows that boys in the U.S. are more likely to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed stimulant medications, fail out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime, and/or take their own lives. Jennifer Siebel Newsom's new documentary film, The Mask You Live In, asks: As a society, how are we failing our boys? Her Kickstarter campaign goal of raising $80,000 in 30 was exceeded by over $20,000.
HPVANDME.ORG
This new non profit organization bills its mission as the new cancer battle for boys and men and to spread awareness about HPV throat cancer. One of its major goals is to increase the rate of HPV vaccination among boys and adolescent males. The current effective vaccination rate for this population is only 1%. (Note: The current HPV vaccine for males, Gardasil, is not indicated for oral cancer at this time.)
