International Yoga Day  is celebrated annually on June 21 and was declared to be internationally recognized by the  United Nations  General Assembly  (UNGA) on December 11, 2014.    The  Indian Prime Minister   Narendra Modi  in his UN Address suggested the date of June 21, as it is the  longest day of the year  in the  Northern Hemisphere  and shares special significance in many parts of the world.

"Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and with nature."

An Iyengar Yoga Retreat with Krisna

This is a unique retreat for adventurous souls who are willing to camp out and enjoy full days of varied practice in the fresh and inspiring atmosphere of Rasa Creek Farm. It is an opportunity to unplug and focus on deepening your sadhana. We will have meditation, pranayama, and asana sessions as well as philosophy and an evening program that may include talks and other surprises. We will have wonderful vegetarian meals, with mostly organic, local produce. The location is the home of Kripa Mandir, a small ashram and a working organic seed garlic farm, with an option to do some karma yoga and walk the property. The farm has hot showers and compost toilets. Bring your tent or trailer (no hook-ups). Commuters are welcome but we start early! We can usually accommodate children or other family members, just ask.

Birken Forest Visit
By George Longden

On the first weekend in June, in her capacity as facilitator for the Monday meditation group, Laurie DeBray led a group of 12 meditators on a visit to the Birken Forest Monastery. The Monastery is approximately 40 km southeast of Kamloops and is set amongst 80 wooded acres at 4000 foot elevation. Birken is one of the few Theravada Forest Monasteries in North America, so we are fortunate that it is so close and accessible.

The visit was structured like a retreat, with regular sitting and walking meditation, starting at 5:30 am, along with Dhamma talks and less formal teatime talks each evening with Ajahn Sona. For many, it was their first visit to the Monastery; for others it was a chance to reconnect. Each of us attending came away with a 'Pearl of Wisdom' to integrate into our daily lives.

My personal realization was finding clarity on how important morning meditation is to all the other aspects of my life. Since 1971 when I was first introduced to meditation, it has been like an old friend that has been there for the moments of great need in my life. Ajahn Sona's Dhamma talks on loving kindness provided many moments to reflect and ponder for me throughout the weekend.

For more information about the Monastery, visit their website: http://www.birken.ca. The website also features the largest collection of Dhamma talks in Canada and possibly the world, with over 4500 to chose from.

Volunteer Appreciation Tea

On Sunday June 5th, the yoga house volunteers were invited to a complimentary Restorative Yoga Class with Tea and Goodies afterwards. This is our third annual event to honour the hours of selfless service our amazing volunteer team so generously gives to KYH. A big THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to the evening, and to Chaibaba Tea for their generous donation!
