House and Senate Sessions Consider Gubernatorial Vetoes
This week ' s House and Senate sessions, called to act on a state drug grant program assisting law enforcement agencies, included consideration of several veto messages issued by the governor.  Votes on gubernatorial vetoes are taken in response to the question, " Notwithstanding the Governor ' s veto, shall the bill become law? "   Yes votes are to override the veto; no votes are to sustain the veto.  Veto overrides require a two-thirds supermajority vote.  Of special interest to school boards was the following vote.

Pupil Assignment to a Private School
HB1637 allows a school district to assign a child to another public school in another school district or to an approved, private school if there is no public school for the child's grade in the child's resident district.  The bill also allows a school board to make a contract with a private school to provide for the education of a child who resides in a district that does not have a public school at the child's grade level .

FAILS 147-105, lacking necessary 2/3 supermajority.

For the complete text of any bill, go to the general court web site and enter the bill number, e.g. HB1563, and make sure the Session Year is 2016.
