Simple Steps for Summer Safety

While Oklahoma children, parents and child care providers welcome summer as a time of recreation, it's important to remember with all that fun comes some risks.
The heat can be brutal in our Sooner state, and it's tempting head to the water to cool off. Whether at the pool or the lake, basic water safety measures should always be considered. Utilizing a life-vest and float toys are simple ways to minimize risk. But, no amount of precaution can replace a constant adult presence. Supervising swim time is an active responsibility.
If travel is part of your summer plans, stay on top of child-related car safety standards. According to SafeKids.org, up to 73 percent of car seats are used or installed incorrectly. Take a look at this
car seat checklist for some important safety tips.
The Department of Health says more than 50 percent of child deaths in hot vehicles are due to distraction or forgetfulness. In order to avoid this temperature-related tragedy, consider losing a shoe.
Before starting the car, place one shoe in the backseat with the child. Placing your foot on the hot pavement serves as a reminder that the child should not be left in the hot car. Not even the shortest errand is worth a child's safety.
As with any facet of child care, you can never learn too much. Care providers and parents seeking to be better equipped for safety should consider renewing their CPR certifications and first aid training. We offer these classes on a regular basis. STARS is a program held by the State of Oklahoma, that has been implemented to improve the quality of child care for children.
Warmline:
Warmline offers free telephone consultation to child care providers and families on numerous topics of concern. Consultants refer providers to appropriate services and resources within their communities.
