Ebola Virus Disease - Updates and Resources

Colleges and universities across the nation have been cautiously preparing for the possible arrival of the Ebola virus and taking essential steps to prevent it from coming to their campuses. To assist these communities, we have compiled relevant guidance, training, updates and other resources below.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published comprehensive guidance for colleges and universities about Ebola. The guidance includes, but is not limited to, advice on the following:

  • Travel precautions and advice for students, faculty and staff arriving to U.S. campuses from countries where Ebola is prevalent
  • What campuses can do to keep community members safe from Ebola
  • Guidelines for evaluation of students or others suspected of having Ebola
  • Interim guidance for monitoring and movement of people with Ebola exposure
For timely Ebola updates and general information, visit the CDC's

Ebola website that covers a wide array of information about the virus to include prevention, signs and symptoms, risk of exposure, treatment, clinical guidance and more.

The Metro Nashville Police Department produced an Ebola training video for law enforcement officers that features Dr. Corey M. Slovis, Professor of Emergency Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical School. In the video, Dr. Slovis explains what police officers need to know about the virus and then answers several officers' pertinent questions.

For health care workers, the World Health Organization (WHO) updated their personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines for Ebola response to "clarify and standardize safe and effective PPE options to protect health care workers and patients, as well as provide information for procurement of PPE stock in the current Ebola outbreak."

Fire Safety on Campuses

Fire safety continues to be a critical issue on campuses nationwide. Since 2000, 169 people have died in campus-related fires with 87% of these deaths occurring in off-campus housing. Accordingly, a greater emphasis is being placed on reaching out to and educating students who reside off-campus. These students are more difficult to reach but educating them about common factors in off-campus fires is key to reducing deaths. These factors include:

  • lack of automatic sprinklers
  • missing or disabled smoke alarms
  • careless disposal of smoking materials (cigarettes are the leading cause of fatal fires)
  • impaired judgment from alcohol consumption
  • fires originating on upholstered furniture, or on decks and porches

A few organizations have emerged as the leaders in campus fire safety:
