Amazing!

June 16 - 19, 2016
TORUK - The First Flight is a live immersive multimedia spectacle that brings to the stage the breathtaking world of James Cameron's AVATAR like you have never seen it before.

Through a riveting fusion of cutting-edge visuals, puppetry and stagecraft buoyed by a soaring cinematic score, Cirque du Soleil applies its unique signature style to James Cameron's imaginary world and "makes the bond" between two kindred artistic visions that capture the imagination.

This live immersive experience also bears the distinct signature of directors and multimedia innovators Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon. It is a living ode to the Na'vi's symbiotic coexistence with nature and their belief in the basic interconnectedness of all living things.

CineMoms got a behind-the-scenes look at TORUK - The First in Flight by show publicist, Laura Silverman:

How did the idea of TORUK - The First in Flight come about?
James Cameron has always been a huge fan of Cirque du Soleil and likewise Cirque du Soleil has always been a big fan of his work and they actually collaborated a few years ago on the movie, Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away.   It came up shortly after Avatar came out and it really was just a conversation between Cirque du Soleil and James Cameron about wanting to work together in some way on a live show.  And James Cameron had said that some of the characteristics of the Na'vi's were inspired by the way he had seen Cirque du Soleil artists move and they decided to create a live performance show based on Avatar. The specifics of the show came about later and it was about two years ago, October 2014 that everything was set and they started moving forward to build the show.
Tell us about  the set design..are they trying to recreate Pandora?

First off, the show is a prequel to Avatar.  There are no actual Avatars in our show.  They are all Na'vi's, the blue humanoids that live on Pandora.  It takes place thousands of years before the events that happen in the film and we are doing our very best to recreate Pandora.  So, the way the stage is all set up, we are using the entire arena floor so there is no floor seating.  And every single set piece is actually being covered in projection throughout the show.   There are 40 projectors that bring to life the different landscapes of Pandora. It's also used for storytelling as well.  We are able to emphasize that these three main characters are going on a journey.   Different landscapes are used to show Pandora and everything they are experiencing.  And we are hoping the audiences experience it as well.

Tell us about the costumes and make up?  How long is the process?
The artists are fully costumed with the exception of their face.  So everything else has clothing on it.  They are all blue with different shading and lights and detail.  Most started at two hours but now that they've been doing it for awhile, they have an average of about 45 minutes to an hour.  Kym Barrett, who is the costume designer, did a lot of interesting things with the costumes to bring to life the Na'vi.  We tried to hire as many tall acrobats as we can but they still don't come close to 10 feet tall, so she raised where the nipples and the navel are on the bodice of the body suit to make them appear taller than they are.  And of course, everyone has a tail.  That was one of the most important elements and one of the first things they were given when they got hired for the show.  They were told to wear it all the time, get used to it and live with it so it is basically another piece of their body now.
