The Dialogue

This feature is a question-and-answer session with a new Blount County Chamber member. So here we go with our 26th installment visiting with Dr. Drew Osborn, Pediatric Dentist at Foothills Pediatric Dentistry, which helps children and their families have great smiles and healthy mouths!

Describe what a pediatric dentist does. Similar to pediatricians, we provide dental care for children through team members specialized in caring for children and their unique needs and outlook. We provide basic check-ups, routine exams, x-rays and cleanings as well as speciliazed care for children with special health care needs and dentistry under anesthesia when appropriate.

How did you get started in dentistry? In 2003, we opened in Maryville and I've been practicing since 1996. I became interested in pediatric dentistry after working as a dental assistant for Nationwide Children's Hospital. I also served in the U.S. Navy for eight years and then went for an additional two years of specialized training at Denver Children's Hospital.

Who is your mentor? I have had several mentors over the years. From my experiences in the U.S. Navy, an oral surgeon Dr. Riding, faculty like Dr. Thane Crump who is in South Dakota, Dr. Wilson at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and many other colleagues.

Describe your patients. Most of my customers drive electric cars and ride tricycles. They don't work but play all the time. They smile and run around -- some cry but most leave happy. We hope they don't eat too much sugar and brush their teeth for two minutes twice a day.

What do you enjoy about your practice? Surprise hugs.
