10% Campaign

The 10% Campaign is a project of the Center For Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS).  The campaign encourages you to spend 10 percent of your existing food dollars to support North Carolina food producers, businesses and communities. Why 10%?  In North Carolina, we spend 35 billion dollars on food every year.  If we spend 10% of our food dollars on local product, we can infuse over 3.5 billion dollars into the local economy.  As avid supporters of the Durham Farmers' Market, you already know the many advantages to shopping locally.  So, why join the campaign?  It will re-affirm your commitment to shopping locally and it sends a strong message to policy makers about the importance of local foods!  For more information visit: www.nc10percent.com

I'm very pleased to announce the opening of the 7th Season of our Wednesday Market! The Wednesday Market opened in May of 2008 after many customers requested that we open a mid-week market. Customers, restauranteurs, and farmers were all interested in an additional venue to buy and sell fresh, local farm products during the middle of the week. Since 2008, the Wednesday Market has grown from about 10 vendors per week to 25+ vendors per week and now includes some great prepared foods as well. Alongside the great veggies and meats, you'll find tempeh, nut butters, gluten free baked good, hearth baked breads, pastries, and now Persian style foods!

This year, there are several brand new Wednesday Market vendors to introduce to you!

Reedy Fork Farm is a 500 acre organic farm located in Elon, NC. The farm is owned by George Teauge's family and has been in their family since 1950. Reedy Fork Farm raises cattle and will be bringing certified organic beef to the Wednesday Market. They will also be selling organic feed (for Durham's many chickens!) made from the grain raised on their farm. The feed will be available by special order; talk to Melissa at the Market about what you'd like to buy and they will deliver it to you the following week.

mally Pomegranate Kitchen is owned by Mally Rafizadeh and located right here in Durham. Mally has 15 years experience in the catering business and specializes in making fresh dishes with an international flavor that highlight seasonal and local ingredients. Many of the foods that she will be offering are both vegetarian and gluten free. Mally will be bringing pre-made dishes that you can pick up and take home for an easy and healthy meal.

root down Root Down Farm is joining the Wednesday Market as well! This farm is not new to the Market, they sold their produce at the Market this winter. However, this will be their first season at the Wednesday Market. Root Down Farm is owned by Kathleen Smith and is located in Cedar Grove. Kathleen specializes in high quality vegetables with a focus on storage crops such as dried beans, cornmeal, etc. This summer, she will be offering a CSA which can be picked up at the Wednesday Market. She'll have all the details for you tomorrow! rootdownnc.com

Along with these new faces, you'll also see some familiar faces that haven't been to Market since last season. Tomorrow, we'll see Tempeh Girl, Chicken Bridge Bakery, Waterdog Farms and perhaps Farm 42!

Also, to help ring in the new season, storyteller Cynthia Raxter will be at Market telling tales of growing up rambunctious on a farm in the NC mountains. Her stories are fun for kids of all ages, so bring your little one, or just listen in.

See you at the market!

More nice Spring weather!  We will have great salad greens this week.   For Wednesday's market, we have pretty multi-leafed lettuces, large green and red leaf lettuces, some beautiful salad mix, collard, chard and spinach.

This week we should have about the same amount of produce at last week - I will list most in the online store so you can reserve some and not have to get to market so early.  TinyFarmMarket.com

It's still a great time to sign up for our weekly box program and get a start on lots of fresh vegetables in AprilTinyFarm.com for info.  The hoops are full, give us some more sunny days and our market tables we be full again.

Waterdog Farms

waterdog farms Waterdog Farms is proud to offer our sustainably produced, unique herbal teas, culinary herbs, unique produce, and cut flowers at the Wednesday

Durham Farmer's Market this year.  This week we plan on offering field-grown tulips and dried oregano jars.  See you at market.

Chapel Hill Creamery

chapel hill creamery New Moon is available this Wednesday at the market. This semi ripened Camembert style cheese is light and fresh tasting, especially now that our cows are grazing every day. The more herbal notes of the milk come through in this cheese which reflects  our spring weather. Right now the cows are brought to the parlor for morning milking and then taken to a fresh area of grass for the day. After the evening milking, they go out again to a different area so that they have more grass and don't eat the first area too close to the ground. Eventually they will come back to the first area when it has grown tall enough for grazing. This is known as rotational grazing or strip grazing and gives the cows grass that is at the most nutritional stage of growth.

Other cheeses include Carolina Moon, Dairyland Farmers, Smoked Farmers, Calvander,  Hickory Grove, and Pheta. All of these are great for cooking with as they melt well or serve them at room temperature as an appetizer or snack. Our pheta adds extra flavor to salads or Mediterranean dishes. We'll have a variety of sausages, hot and mild as well as ground pork. Our sausages are made with the hams for a hearty flavor. Keep some in your freezer for a quick and easy dinner. See you Wednesday!

Come and visit us on the PIEDMONT FARM TOUR Saturday and Sunday April 26 & 27, from 2pm-6pm both days.  See how we turn soil, sunlight and grass into milk and our delicious farmhouse cheeses!
