Hello!

Hope all of our friends in the middle and northern US are staying warm during this frigid spell. What better opportunity is there to sit in front of a fire with something warm to drink and read the latest Upton Report!

In this week's issue we're featuring Ms. Kezia Vernon's fully carved Brescian, as well as a little bass by Romano Solano. There is also a video of Gary discussing the benefits of upgrading to a Deluxe Top and a quick snapshot of the frog I'm making for the first UB double bass bow.

As always, don't hesitate to contact us with any questions. We love hearing from you!

Kezia Vernon's UB Brescian
The dream bass of Helena Symphony's principal bassist

So many people have been asking us about this beautiful fully carved Brescian that we felt we had to feature it here. I was commissioned by Ms. Kezia Vernon (principal bassist of the Helena Symphony and frequent contributor on television (CBS, Queen Latifah Show) after visits to several shops and playing dozens of basses from $1500-$600,000. Upton Bass was the final stop on her bass journey; she came first to the Boston location and played a UB Mittenwald- loved it- but then headed down to the Mystic shop and decided that the Brescian was the perfect fit. The Deluxe Top explained!

We get a lot of inquiries on a weekly basis regarding wood choice- What makes one cut of spruce better than another? What are the differences between poplar and maple with regards to tone? And one of the most frequent- What's the difference between the Deluxe and standard carved tops? Click the pic to watch Gary work on and explain!

A Unique Little Bass

This is an interesting Solano double bass custom built for a bassist in 1999. The work is typical Solano showing a free form building technique and lots of character. It is a unique 5-string 36" scale length soloist instrument and has a wonderful cello like singing quality under the bow.

And finally...

To all of you that have been following along, here's a quick pick of the frog I'm making from scratch for the first UB bass bow. The slide and button are also made...now on to the ferrule, and then bending the stick!
