Summer is here! What are your plans?
Is a well-deserved vacation scheduled in your calendar? Do you have children out of school for the summer? What are your plans for them? Will they be attending camp or are they home with you?
Whatever your plans there are a few things you can't control. One of those is the weather. Despite the best laid plans to have fun outdoors the weather sometimes makes it impossible to carry out those plans. When this happens you have a choice. You can either complain making yourself and those around you miserable or you can change your attitude and roll with it.
Before you go away on your vacation do a little research to find out what your available options might be if it is pouring rain. You can also pack a few small activities like coloring books, colored pencils, markers and crayons. Bring coloring books meant for adults as well as those for children. Research shows that coloring can be a relaxing activity. It also promotes conversation. It's also a great way for everyone to work on their own individual project and be together at the same time. Playing cards are good also. These things are light weight and take up little room in your suitcase. There may be an aquarium to visit or a great museum with things of interest to everyone in your family.
If you are home and the children have 'nothing to do' other than tv or games on their electronic devise have a list of activities for them.
Here are my top five suggestions:
- Do you have board games? Rainy days are a great time to pull them out. Board games have a terrific educational component to them that is sometimes overlooked. The children engage in counting, reading, and taking turns. All wonderful skills!
- Do you like to bake? If you do that can be a really fun way to spend a few hours on a rainy day. The children can read the recipe, measure the ingredients, mix the batter and set the timer. Also educational skills to reinforce while they are away from the classroom.
- Read a chapter book. Create a comfy spot with extra blankets and pillows. If your children are good readers you can take turns reading with your children. This helps to engage their mind and promotes creativity! Ask them to draw a picture of their favorite character in the story.
- Coloring - bring out the coloring books for adults and for children. You can have a selection of markers, colored pencils, and crayons available. Remember to talk while you're coloring.
- Clean a room. Pick a room that you can clean as a group. Assign a different cleaning task to each child or person. Some ideas are: dust, clean mirrors, sweep, vacuum, fluff pillows... depending on the area there can be a little or a lot to do. When everyone helps and is involved the task is accomplished quickly.
Whatever it is that you are up to this summer remember that when things don't go the way you had hoped or intended you have choices as to how you respond. Look at your options and see if you can make the best of it. Your attitude is so important!
Have a wonderful summer!
