Celebrate the Americans with Disabilities Act!

Saturday, July 26 marks the 24th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush, and became one of the most comprehensive pieces of civil rights legislation in the United States. As we observe the anniversary of this important milestone, we can reflect on the progress made through the implementation of the ADA and celebrate the positive impact the law has had on our country, and most importantly, the lives of people with disabilities, over the past 24 years.

Be sure to check out F.I.N.D. for ADA events in your area, resources and information, and to browse and share stories of how the ADA has impacted your life.

Senator Harkin To Speak at Johnson County ADA Celebration

Senator Tom Harkin will deliver the keynote speech at this year's Johnson County ADA Celebration, "24 Years Long 24 Years Strong: The Impact of the Americans with Disabilities Act". The celebration will be held this Saturday, July 26 from 11am-2pm at the Pedestrian Mall in downtown Iowa City.

Brain Injury Waiver Assessment Listening Sessions

Time Sensitive: Share Your Thoughts and Experience!

Individuals with Brain Injuries and their family members are invited to participate in one of five Listening Sessions across Iowa (click here for details). Stakeholders will be asked to provide feedback to the Department of Human Services in the selection of a standardized assessment tool. The selected tool will be used to measure the supports needed for a person with brain injury to live successfully in a community setting of their choice.

Iowa Department of Education 2014 Special Education Survey

As the new school year edges closer, the Iowa Department of Education asks that you take a few minutes to take their 2014 Special Education Survey. This is a follow up to a survey conducted in 2012. They want to hear from everyone -- educators, administrators, parents and other stakeholders. Survey results will be shared in upcoming issues of Each and Every Child.

Medicaid Announces Autism Services Now Covered

In a major victory for Medicaid coverage of autism, a federal agency has directed the states to cover medically necessary treatments for autism for children and young adults, including behavioral health treatments such as Applied Behavior Analysis. The announcement by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services makes clear that autism treatment must be addressed under Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment services, which cover Medicaid-eligible children up to the age of 21.

Assessing Effects of TRIAD Math Intervention for Preschoolers

Technology-enhanced, Research-based, Instruction, Assessment, and professional Development (TRIAD) is a math intervention for preschoolers that combines a curriculum, a software-based teaching tool, and in-person teacher professional development. On July 1, 2014, the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) released a single study review assessing one study that looked at the effects of TRIAD on young children. The study found that children who received TRIAD in preschool only (TRIAD-NFT), as well as children who received TRIAD in both preschool and kindergarten (TRIAD-FT) performed statistically better than comparison groups of children. The WWC confirmed these findings. There was no difference in the performance of the TRIAD-NFT group and the TRIAD-FT group. For more details, see the full review.
