JUNE 2016
Special MIM Edition
|
Dear CIM Supporters,
The
9th Annual Minnesota Irish Music Weekend
is almost here! We are so excited
to welcome a uniquely Irish-American line-up of Brian Conway (fiddle), Billy McComiskey (accordion), Brendan Dolan (flute & piano), the return of the amazing Joanie Madden (whistle & silver flute) plus some fantastic local and regional instructors.
We are very sad to announce that singer Sheila Shigley had to cancel coming to MIM
due to an illness in her family.
In addition to the Great Session Experience and the Master concert, there will be workshops, the Teen Trad Showcase, lectures and excellent Irish music programs for children, teens, and tweens! It is not too late to register. We hope to see you there!
This coming Monday, June 6th from 7-8pm, we would like to invite you to a fun evening of stellar music at a concert by our very own Advanced Youth Ensemble at Como Dockside. This will be a great community event; bring your families and friends for a quintessential Minnesota lakeside concert!
Our Summer term starts on Monday, June 13th! Register now for summer camps, group classes, MIM and private lessons. You can register online via our website for all group classes and camps; please contact Lorin directly to schedule private lessons. MIM registration forms can be found at our website as well.
Last month, 25 of our students, their families, and two CIM instructors boarded a bus to Cincinnati for the Midwest Fleadh Cheoil (our regional Irish music competition). We are immensely proud of all of our students who worked so hard to prepare their tunes and songs for this competition! Check out a full list of students who participated and statistics below.
Thank you to all of you who came and supported our students at our Spring Recitals! What stellar celebrations of our students' talents they were! Photos from the recitals will be available to view soon on our Facebook page.
And finally, please welcome our executive director, Norah, back from maternity leave. Norah is back doing administrative work now and will be back teaching on Tuesdays this summer. Thank you to all who stepped in to help CIM to run smoothly during Norah's leave!

AN AMAZING WEEKEND AT THE MIDWEST FLEADH!

Most of our students who competed at the Fleadh

The
Midwest Fleadh Cheoil
(pronounced 'flah') is a the main regional traditional
Irish music competition put on annually by the international Irish music organization called
Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. This year, the fleadh was hosted by the Craobh Riley and the Riley School of Irish Music in Cincinnati, Ohio from May 6-8 at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherlands Plaza Hotel. Next year, 2017, the fleadh will be in St. Louis!
We had 24 students and one instructor compete in solo, duo, trio, and/or group competitions at the fleadh. We would like to congratulate ALL of the hard-working, dedicated, and talented students who participated this year:

Ours students were rewarded for all of their hard work with an impressive 29 medals in 37 competitions! In our two group competitions, CIM placed 2nd in both the grupa cheoil and ceili band. Other statistics for the weekend:
First place medals: 17
Second place medals: 7
Third place medals: 5
Please also join us in thanking all of our CIM instructors who prepared these students for their fleadh competitions! We are fortunate to have instructors of such high calibre here at CIM handing down the tradition!
In addition to the competition, a major focus of the Midwest Fleadh Cheoil is the comaraderie and the enjoyment and satisfaction of setting (and achieving) musical goals. All of the students, parents, and instructors had a wonderful time getting to know one another better as we enjoyed tunes on the bus, meals together and many good chats throughout the weekend.
Musicians who placed first or second qualify to compete in Ireland at the All-Ireland Fleadh. The Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2016 will be held in Ennis from August 14-22. More information is on the fleadhcheoil.ie website. For the past 4 years, a small group of CIM students have decided to make the trip with their families.
