Abstract Paintings at Marion Art Center
in Marion, Massachusetts June 3 through July 9
Featured work from Alison Horvitz
Abstract works by artists Susan Strauss and Alison Horvitz are not to be overlooked. On display at the Marion Art Center now through July 9, Abstract Paintings features works from both Strauss andHorvitz. Though each artist ultimately provides a different expression of their own internal monologues, the works complement each other. Both accomplished artists, Strauss received a Post Baccalaureate painting degree from UMass Dartmouth and has had several solo shows, where Horvitz has studied painting at several locations including Boston University, Rhode Island School of Design and UMass Dartmouth. Horvitz' work has been displayed in multiple shows, and she shows her passion for the arts by curating, in addition to founding the Fall River Open Studios, and she was recently awarded an artist residency in Italy where she will find new inspiration for her works. Susan Strauss, who grew up outside of New York City, finds inspiration from landscapes which can be seen throughout several of her works in the show. While her work "Breathe" features light blues and greens and provides a sense of fresh air, "Wild Quince" uses darker oranges reminiscent of fall landscapes and showing her talent in a wide range of color. Alison Horvitz takes a different approach in her work, using an accumulation of form, texture, color and pattern. For her, "repetition if critical" as can be seen in her work "Moon Pull" featuring darker blues and golds. Whereas Strauss' pieces can be interpreted as an abstract landscape almost immediately, Horvitz creates pieces that are intentionally devoid of a literal meaning and that are open to any interpretation. Abstract Paintings is running now through July 9 at the Marion Art Center in Marion, MA. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Exploring a Sense of Place at Brickbottom Artists Association
in Somerville, Massachusetts now through June 25

Space is crucial to each individual. Though everyone has different conceptualizations of space or how much space they need, it's necessary for individuals to function alone and together. The Brickbottom Artists Association explores these differences with featured works by artists Deb Hickey, Darlene DeVita and Ron Pownall. The current exhibition, Exploring a Sense of Place, is running now through June 25 with a reception on Sunday, June 5 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The three artists have unique processes that lead to individual and innovative works that make this show so strong. The artists, though influenced by different experiences and who work with different mediums, enhance the work of one another. Hickey, who works with mixed media collage and photographs architectural landscapes, rearranges images and photographs in order to execute her own original idea of the space, whereas DeVita works primarily in photography, including film, toy and digital and uses the lens to capture the sense of space she is looking to achieve. Pownall, however, worked with documentary video in order to capture the demolition of the Somerville Waste Management Transfer Station. Pownall captured the demolition over a series of months and created a continuous video that will be shown during the exhibit. Each of the artists processes create unique works of different spaces and the different mediums featured create a strong sense not only of artistic talent, but the differences in interpretation of space. Exploring a Sense of Place is running now through June 25 at the Brickbottom Artists Association. The gallery is open Thursday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Tools & Relics at The Open Aperture Art Gallery
in Newport, Rhode Island now through June 22
Domesticated: Seeing Past Seduction by Yorgos Efthymiadis
The Open Aperture Gallery features three artists in their current exhibition Tools & Relics. On display now through June 22, there is still time to view the works of Yorgos Efthymiadis, Paige Kooyenga and Maya Krinsky at The Open Aperture Art Gallery Though the three photographers use the medium in order to create quite different works, the strength of this exhibit lies within the artists' ability to create dramatic conversations with their imagery. Yorgos Efthymiadis comments on the dangers of weaponry stating, "When describing weapons, "peaceful" and "silent" are not words that come to mind. When seen as antiques, though, their initial purpose is camouflaged." By capturing images of guns in stillness surrounded by beauty, Efthymiadis encourages the viewer to acknowledge the reality of the weaponry despite their beautiful surroundings. Maya Krinsky creates commentaries on basic social interactions such as eye contact, money and the English language. Paige Kooyenga, who has shown work at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, creates dramatic photographers featuring abstract images and dark contrasts and even striking black and white portraits. This exhibition features work from Efthymiadis, Kooyenga and Krinsky that focus on the contrast between beauty and danger within cultural elements. Tools & Relics is on display
