The City of Tucson, neighborhood Services, prints and mails one newsletter a year for each neighborhood association. Ours has been sent in and should arrive in mailboxes by the end of June.

SCHOOL PLAYGROUND A PUBLIC PARK AFTER HOURS: Somehow in the transfer of the school from TUSD to leassee International School, the signs on the fence were lost. The playground is a public city park after school hours. The signs disappeared and now cannot be found. After neighbors met with Parks and Rec and the School, City Parks and Recreation has promised to replace the signs. Meanwhile the gates on the south and north side of the playground remain unlocked after hours for the public. However, remember that as a city park--no pooches allowed.
HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOOD SIGN AT SENECA AND MOUNTAIN: An incident at that site required the city to replace the stop sign. The sign shop did not return the historic signs to the pole. A work order has been placed to replace the signs. However, the neighborhood has only two "extra" signs (in case of graffiti) and now has no replacements.

Banner Health has initiated quarterly meetings with representatives of surrounding neighborhoods in an effort to keep residents informed of the progress of construction of the new hospital.
High points of Banner -Neighborhood meeting held May 11:
* Transfer of property ownership from UA to Banner Health is expected during June, 2016.
* Height of new building will be nine stories and is designed for two additional stories to be added at a future date.
*Helipad will remain in current location, atop Diamond Children's Center, and will be moved to the top level of the new hospital when levels 10 and 11 are completed.
* Construction of concrete caissons, rising from a depth of 45 feet to the building pad, will begin in July, 2016 and expected to continue through January, 2017. Related construction noise can be expected, with some of the work scheduled during night and early morning hours.

Come the monsoons, Jefferson Park celebrates the annual flooding of Vine Avenue with a Rubber Ducky Race. The "Duck Committee" monitors the weather reports, predicts the Duck Run, announces the date and time by a google groups alert and braves the flood to release the Duckies.
It is fun, and a minor fundraiser. You can participate by purchasing a Duck. Get your duck by sending $ 5 to Joan Hall 1441 E Edison, calling 990-8054, or e-mail [email protected].
Your duck will be registered!
Prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.

RULES:
1) Each donation of $5 entitles the sponosr to one duck. Anyone with $ can donate.
2) Each duck receives a number. Each number is registered to a donor
3) All ducks are uniform in size and shape.
4) All ducks are released simultaneously.
5) Ducks that become entangled curbside can be released by the duck committee--but can not be moved ahead.
6) Ducks that upend must remain that way til the finish line.
7) No one may touch, prod, or push their ducks during the race. Cheering is permitted-booing frowned upon. Ducks are sensitive.
8) Sponsors need not be present to win. Ducks do.

Grant Road Coalition - Central Segments (First Ave to Tucson Blvd) meets and discusses.
Where & When: Ward III Office, 6pm, 4th Tuesday of the month
Who: Representatives of Mtn/First,SAMOS, Jefferson Park, Catalina Vista, Campbell/Grant and all interested neighbors.
Why: Understand the Grant Road Project as it affects the contiguous neighborhoods, Give stakeholder input to the city and look for creative solutions to mitigate the negative effects of a 6 lane highway.
Recent issues:
1) Awaiting verdict on the Urban Park Grant (for tghe parcels west of Park) submitted to the Federal level - Winner announced October 2016. See grant ap at:
2) Awaiting the release of the Grant Road budget.
3) Creation of a "Centers": task force to understand and have input. The "Centers" are defined as the Intersections of First/Grant, Campbel/Grant and Tucson Blvd/Grant.--i.e.the commercial developments.
4) Strengthening the neighborhoods from within - networking, promoting home ownership, sharing strategies/information i.e. code enforcement, unruly gatherings, green infrastructure.

OUR NEIGHBOR TO THE EAST RECORDS ITS HISTORY
Catalina Vista is saving a piece of its history. They have saved tiles from the historic buildings at Potter Place and have raised enough money to build a ramada at Tahoe Park (called "Circle Park" by neighborhood kids).
The image to the right is an artist's rendition of the final ramada. The neighborhood has plans to include historic information. That site was the historic Kramer Ranch and the first Tucson's Fiesta de los Vaqueros. The veterinarian for the Rodeo lived in Jefferson Park. The mesquite to which he tied the horses still stands today.
One Catalina neighbor has offered to build a Little Free Library to match the ramada. These efforts are not without a lot of planning with the city and organization. Bravo Catalina Vista!

GREEN COMMITTEE - Park Adoption needs you!
|
The park at the east end of Edison has been adopted by the JPNA Green Committee through "Tucson Clean and Beautiful". We call it Edison Plaza. When the neighborhood makes good on its promise to maintain it, a sign will be posted indicating Jefferson Park has adopted the area.
So, BYOB (bring your own bag) and the kids, meet at "Edison Plaza", get exercise, and have fun. Third Saturday's of the month 6 am to 8 am until September--then later in the day. Watch for reminders on the list serve.
The distance from Edison to Lester is .4 miles -roundtrip almost a mile...longer if you walk from your house!

Habitat at Home is a Tucson Audubon program to recognize those that create sustainable, safe bird habitat in their yards. The cornerstone of this program is native plants. he cornerstone of this program is native plants but we are looking for accomplishments in other areas too, such as water conservation, reducing pesticides and increasing bird nesting opportunities.
We are a local program coordinating with a nationwide program, National Audubon Society's
Plants for Birds initiative, designed to improve habitat for birds in cities and towns all over North America.
Background: Reason for the Program
We cannot rely only on forests, deserts and wilderness areas to protect all the bird diversity in North America. We also need to reconcile our cities and suburbs with the needs of birds. Part of doing this is creating safe, sustainable habitat in the places we live, work and go to school. The Habitat at Home program gives homeowners advice about how to do this. Then, when a homeowner has achieved enough in several different categories, we recognize their yard as habitat!
How the Program Works
- Sign up for the program, answer a few simple questions your yard, and pay a $25 registration fee ($35 for non-members--you are given an opportunity to become a member during the registration process).
- You will receive a packet of information in the mail and you may explore our online advice for making your yard bird friendly and meeting our recognition criteria.
- Optionally, purchase a $50 visit to your yard by a Tucson Audubon consultant to give you brief on-the-spot suggestions for what to do in your yard--or--purchase a more in-depth $150 visit resulting in a written plan.
- For clarifications or such advice as can be given over the phone, call (520) 209-1806.
- When you are ready, we visit your yard and evaluate it.
- As it meets our program criteria, we recognize your yard as habitat at home!
- At the introductory level we will send you a certificate; at the more advanced levels we will make available a Habitat at Home sign ($35 for 9x12"; $45 for 12x18")!

that time of year again! Take a chance and help your neighborhood. You can't win if you don't play.
Once again, the Friends of Jefferson Park, Inc. are selling chances on the Jim Click raffle. This year a 2016 Ford Mustang! Twenty-five dollars apiece, or five tickets for $100.00. There were only 4,300 of these cars made. The drawing is December 2016. One hundred percent of the ticket sales benefit the neighborhood projects.
