District To Honor Retirees
As another school year comes to a close, it's time to recognize members of the District Five family who are moving on.
Please join us on Wednesday, May 25, at 4:00 p.m. at the District Five Fine Arts Center for a special retirement celebration honoring nearly two dozen employees for their years of service to our students and schools.
Employees being recognized include:
Anne Brewer (Berry Shoals Intermediate), Susan Cooper (Byrnes High School) ,Stephen Bruner (Byrnes High School), Peggy Harrison (Byrnes High School), Carol Nescio (Byrnes High School), Christy Driggers (D.R. Byrnes Students Honored As Award Winning Writers
Three Byrnes High School students are being recognized for their writing skills, taking home prizes for their talent.
Megan Jensen, Hampton Slate and Heather Green were all honored recently as winners in the Spartanburg County Bar Association's annual Law Day essay contest.
The yearly competition challenged students to write this year on the top of the 50th anniversary of the Miranda rights decision.
Jensen was awarded 12th grade runner up, while
Slate and
Green won the 11th and 12th grade divisions, respectively.
All three students are members of
Byrnes teacher
Susanne Cash's AP Lit class. Each one was presented with a check, a certificate of achievement, and a law day medal at a recent ceremony.

Abner Creek Hosts Color Run For Relay
Students, teachers and parents at
Abner Creek Academy laced up their running shoes this week, and got a little dirty for a good cause!
The school hosted its first ever "Color Run" to benefit Relay for Life, and the event was a huge success!
More than 250 people participated, and
Abner Creek raised over $1100 for the worthwhile cause!

Festive Fiesta Brings Fun To River Ridge
A world of culture came to
River Ridge Elementary School this week, as the school hosted its own "Cinco de Mayo" celebration!
Parents, students and teachers all chipped in to make the event a success. Students enjoyed a Mexican sytle lunch, while listening to the tunes of "la guitarra clasica mexicana" and "la musica de Mariachi".
After lunch, students in each class ventured outside to take their swing at beautiful pinatas, filled with yummy treats! Each pinata was made by
River Ridge art creation students.
The day wrapped up with a group Mexican hat dance, enjoyed by the whole school!
"Muchas gracias" for a great day of celebration and fun, as students learned about other cultures!

Lyman Lesson Flies Onto Campus
Some special visitors arrived on
Lyman Elementary's campus this week, bringing a beautiful lesson with them!
3rd graders at
Lyman celebrated the emerging of their very own butterflies, that have been growing in their own cocoons in recent weeks.
The butterflies were released into a tent, where students could go in and interact with them. It was a fun, hands-on experience for everyone!

Duncan Celebrates Moms
Students in
Lynda Sizemore's class at
Duncan Elementary celebrated Mother's Day in style this week with a great party at the school!
Mothers enjoyed special gifts, yummy treats, songs, crafts and interactive dances with their children. The fun ended with a photo booth and door prizes for everyone.

Reidville Scoops Up Reward For Math Students
Dozens of students at
Reidville Elementary School showed off their math skills this week, and enjoyed a sweet prize for their efforts!
68 students at
Reidville celebrated earning their Kiwanis Math Medallions with an ice cream party at the school! The annual competition encourages students to multiplication facts, then take a test to show what they've learned.

River Ridge Celebrates Volunteers
A special group of people, known for helping students, got a well deserved "thank you" this week at
River Ridge Elementary!
The school hosted a celebration for dozens of volunteers, who have given of their time and talents to students at
River Ridge this year.
Thanks to the Reading Buddies from Joy Lutheran Church, PTO moms and all other parents and grandparent volunteers for your dedication to

Students in
Emily Starkey and
Ruth Howell's classes at
Lyman Elementary School recently celebrated "National Poetry Month", complete with a Skype visit from a famous poet!
Kenn Nesbitt has authored many children's poetry books and hosts a website called, "Poetry 4 Kids". Nesbitt let
Lyman students choose poems, which he read aloud, and then discussed with them.

D.R. Hill Honors Students For April
A group of
D.
R. Hill Middle School students are getting a "pat on the back" for their attitudes in, and outside, the classroom!
Nine students were selected as April "Students of the Month" at the school. They include:
Ansley Harter, Zavioun Nash, Kiley Chesney, Parker Lawson, Ethan Brown, Garrett Brown, Jacob Kelly, Madaline Bridges, and Tamiko Styles.
The students exemplify what it means to R.E.A.C.H., which stands for Respect, Effort, Attitude, Cooperation, and Honesty.

Byrnes Academic Team Succeeds In Competition
Congratulations to the
Byrnes High School Academic Team, who showed their smarts against students from across the country!
The
Byrnes team took part in the "3-2-1 Competition", a national online academic competition, including some of the top students in the country.
The
Byrnes team, made up of
Khalil Gamble, Steven Greer, Kelly Marsh, Jonathan Rogers, Adeline Rosenberger, Ellie Stephens, Hunter Stephens, and
Mikaela Williams, placed 3rd in SC and 104th in the United States.
The team has seen great growth, from scoring a 18.5% last year, to a 53.8% this year.

Colleen Cleys, Jessica Jones and Kelly Jewett for helping and encouraging the team this year.

Lady Rebels Headed To Upper State Championship
The
Byrnes High School Lady Rebels softball team will take the mound tonight, with the AAAA Upper State Championship on the line!
The team defeated JL Mann on Monday, 11-5, to head to the Upper State title game vs. Lugoff-Elgin.
If they win, the Lady Rebels will head to the state championship series next week!
First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. TONIGHT at Beech Springs Intermediate School. All Rebel fans are encouraged to wear blue! Let's come out and support our team!

Rebel Theater Company's "Magic Theater" Coming To Stage
The Rebel Theater Company is closing the curtain on another great season with one final performance!
Come out to the D5 Fine Arts Center on Friday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m. for a performance of "Magic Theaer: A Children's Review", by Sandra Matthews Deacon.
Tickets are available at the box office for $5 for adults. Children 12 and under get in free.
Come out and watch magic happen!
