Editor's note regarding 'Wildcat Weekly' summer schedule

Polytechnic campus collected nearly 3,000 pounds of spaghetti for Salina community group
Faculty, staff and students at Kansas State University Polytechnic Campus are hoping to make an impact on the local hunger problem after collecting almost 3,000 pounds of spaghetti for the Salina community.
Kansas State Polytechnic teamed up with Project Salina, an organization that gathers food for distribution to Salina residents who cannot afford to buy meals for themselves, and set a goal of accumulating 2,500 pounds of spaghetti. Within a four-week time period, members of the polytechnic campus not only answered the call for help, they donated in droves. At the end of the Project Salina campaign, faculty, staff members and students had given 2,950 pounds of noodles largely outweighing what was expected.
Les Kinsler, a professor in the computer systems technology program who retired in May, spearheaded the event and also previously has organized blood drives on campus. He enjoys leading philanthropy opportunities because it brings people together and brings about an awareness of meaningful issues.
"
I think it is very important that the university and our campus be involved with local groups and organizations," said Kinsler. "We live in a little social unit of students, faculty and staff, and it's easy to loose track of the needs and happenings of the larger community."
Project Salina was established in 1990 to assist various food agencies in the city with keeping their shelves full year round, not just during the holiday season. Entities, like Kansas State Polytechnic, that initiate a food drive are assigned one non-perishable item, such as spaghetti, and a contribution goal so that Project Salina can accurately plan their amount of stock. According to
Feeding America, more than 8,000 residents in Saline County, where Salina is located, needed help putting food on the table in 2014.
Along with assisting Project Salina and the American Red Cross, Kansas State Polytechnic clubs and organizations require their student members to perform community service. Examples of their philanthropy include volunteering at local retirement communities, within various Salina events like Parade of Lights, and at the VFW, Lions Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

KU, WSU meet with K-State Polytechnic for possible research collaboration
In an effort to connect the three major Kansas universities and possibly bring more research projects and dollars to the state, members of the K-State polytechnic and Manhattan campuses,
The University of Kansas
and
Wichita State University
came together for their first meeting on May 20.
Since aviation is one of the largest industries in Kansas and each of the universities have ties to aviation, the group spoke about how they could team up on larger aerospace research proposals that
would economically benefit the state of Kansas. Stay tuned!

Airport management students attend AAAE conference in Houston
Kansas State Polytechnic's airport management students are continuing their education even after classes have ended!
Eight members of the campus's AAAE, or American Association of Airport Executives, student chapter attended the organization's annual conference in Houston, Texas, from May 15 to 18.
At the conference, they learned about current trends and challenges in the aviation industry. They also were able to network with airport professionals from around the country.

A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. Kansas State Polytechnic's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.

High-five to Dr. Barnhart, Dr. Most and Eric Shappee!
Congratulations to Kurt Barnhart, associate dean of research, Eric Shappee, acting head of the aviation department, and Michael Most, associate professor and UAS program lead, for authoring an unmanned aircraft systems textbook! Along with a fourth independent contributor, Barnhart, Shappee and Most made revisions to the Introduction to Unmanned Aircraft Systems textbook, creating a second edition. The project was two years in the making.
This is another reason why Kansas State Polytechnic has the No. 2 independently rated UAS program in the nation. Well done!

Summer Financial Aid
Will you be attending summer school at K-State Polytechnic? If so, you will need to complete the K-State 2016 Summer Financial Aid Application form to see if you qualify for any financial aid. You must enroll in classes first and then complete the application for aid. The form can be in Room 105 of the Welcome Center.
Loan Repayment Option for Graduating Students
The state of Kansas is offering up to $15,000 in student loan repayment and up to a 5 year state tax waiver for graduates who establish residency in one of the 77 Kansas counties designated as a rural opportunity zone. For more information, visit the link below:

The maximum award amount will not exceed the value of 3 hours at the in-state Manhattan/Salina tuition rate (ie. Campus fees, other institutional fees, etc. are the responsibility of the employee).
