June 2016
Greg Smith, President

President's Letter

June marks the Home Builders Association of Mississippi's 53rd annual convention. We are in full gear as we prepare for a great line-up of speakers and events. The attendance is up from last year and we want to thank everyone who is registered to date. If you are not registered, you still have a little time to come on board the three day tour! This year's convention promises to be both fun and educational.

Since January, we have been working on a new and exciting direction for the association and we will unveil some of those plans during the conference.  The HBAM staff and leadership has been working to form new partnerships that equal more opportunities for you. The convention will also be an opportunity to discuss the 2017 legislative session and potential agenda items.

We will also recognize our newest Hall of Fame inductees, and we have two very special recipients this year.  We will induct our first governor into the Hall of Fame, which will be Governor Phil Bryant. Our second distinguished recipient will be Terry Reeves, who is a great champion for our association and has a long history of support and involvement.  We are really happy to have such wonderful inductees this year.

Finally, we will have lots of fun and education incorporated into this year's event. Our key note speaker, Jeff McManus is going to coach us on team work and his experience in "Growing Weeders to Leaders" at the University of Mississippi. Marshall Ramsey is going to kick of Friday morning with his political satire and great story telling ability. Saturday, Stephanie Lee, with the MS State Board of Contractors, and Trey Copeland, with Jernigan, Copeland and Anderson, will lead a panel to keep us on track and legal on building industry standards.

On behalf of the Board, we sincerely appreciate your membership and look forward to seeing many of you soon. You are the key to our future and thanks for helping us to pave the way!

Overtime Threshold: What's the New Rule?

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has issued a final rule regarding overtime eligibility and specifically, the exemption for employees serving in executive, administrative and professional capacities, also known as the "white collar" exemption. Employers have to comply with the new rule by Dec. 1, 2016.

The rule will have significant ramifications for many employers, including home building firms and not-for-profits, such as HBAs. According to NAHB analysis, nearly 100,000 construction supervisors will now be eligible for overtime under the new rules.

View these FAQs  prepared by NAHB staff to get details on the DOL's updated annual income rules on paying overtime to you or your members' employees. You can also join a webinar on Thursday, June 2 at 2 p.m. ET , when NAHB staff will explain the rules and how they will effect  your members, as well as take questions. Mark your calendar and access the instructions for joining the webinar.

Kyle Hamlett
Kyle Hamlett Construction

Kyle Hamlett, owner of Kyle Hamlett Construction is a member of the Greater Hattiesburg Home Builders Association and is Immediate Past President on their association board. He is also a member of HBAM/NAHB. Kyle has an interesting path that led him to home building and business ownership!

Kyle is a Hattiesburg native who transplanted to  Louisiana for college to pursue a degree in in Religion. From there, he has had quite a transformation. He moved around a bit after graduating and ended up in New Orleans where he took a job as a bell hop and a waiter.  He wound up waiting tables on the riverboat cruise line Mississippi Queen that took him all over the United States.

Eventually, he came home and went back to school at USM, where he obtained a degree in Education. Realizing that teaching  just wasn't his calling, he began looking for another career path and landed a job in the building code department with the City of Hattiesburg. This is where he became interested in home remodeling and building.

As a building inspector for City of Hattiesburg, he met Craig Flanagan. Kyle jokes that Craig offered him a job so he could help him pass inspections. For 10 years, he worked for Craig's company. Kyle joked that his last three bosses were Robert St. John, Mayor Johnny Dupree, and Craig Flanagan.

Last April, he decided to begin his construction business. As a mentor, Craig previously helped Kyle sustain his Home Builder Association dues every year, and took him to national and state conventions. He encouraged him to get involved. Kyle stated that he has always enjoyed being an association member, and particularly likes the lunches, dinners, education, seminars, and networking. He was invited to serve on the local board and worked his way up to President in 2015.  He was also featured as 2013 Home Builder of year.

He credits Craig as being his biggest influence in his career and Home Builders Association activity.

Kyle is married to Susan Holland Hamlett, who was a native of Jackson. They have three daughters Madeline, Olivia, and Maggie Reese.

Builder Groups Back Effort to Halt Overtime Rule
The U.S. Labor Department, at the direction of the White House, on Wednesday released details of new rules that double the threshold at which a private-sector employee becomes ineligible for overtime to $47,476 annually, or $913 per week, from roughly half that amount.
