Graduation 2016 Style
Saturday morning, May 28, Brookville High School held their 127th annual commencement exercises. There were 119 diplomas earned by the class of 2016. The ceremony was held at the Salem Church of God where family, friends, staff and peers attended in large numbers to enjoy this celebration of accomplishment.

It was impossible for the attendees to ignore the most obvious characteristic of this graduating class; they are a very strong academically gifted group Over one-quarter of the class scored 25 or above on the ACT test. Seven of the 119 scored 30 or above. This academic prowess resulted in 35 honors diplomas and 17 graduates earning a grade point average that established them as either valedictorian or salutatorian.

A traditional part of the program is the awarding of scholarships from the Brookville Community Scholarship Foundation. Every student who submitted an application, 78 total, received financial support. The Foundation alone granted over $102,000 in scholarship funds to the class of 2016. Class advisor, Mrs. Courtney Donati, announced that the class of 2016 had earned over two million dollars in total scholarship funds!

Where Will They Go
While we understand this list is not all inclusive and is subject to change over the coming weeks, we thought you might be interested to see where this year's graduates have requested their transcripts be sent, with the intention of attending that school. By looking over this list it gives you a snapshot of the hopes, dreams, plans and aspirations of BHS graduates moving forward. We say good luck and Godspeed to all our graduates.

Every four years a member of the community is recognized at graduation by receiving the C.W. Thomas Award. This year's recipient was Dr. John Rhodes, Jr. DDS. You can read more about the award and this year's recipient later in this newsletter.

Brookville Schools could not be more proud of the Class of 2016. In opening comments superintendent Tim Hopkins described them as being bright, articulate, charismatic and caring. This strong endorsement bodes well for their future continued success. Congratulations to the Class of 2016!
School Honors C.W. Thomas Award Winner
Dr. John Rhodes, Jr. DDS, Serves Community and School
Dr C.W.Thomas Recipient
Every four years, the Brookville Local School District presents the Dr. C.W. Thomas Award to a Brookville Resident. This award is inspired by long-time Brookville physician C.W. "Doc" Thomas who served the Brookville Schools and Community for over 50 years. Dr. Thomas was a man of medicine, science, art, literature and a sports enthusiast. He lived according to his belief in a personal obligation to work for the welfare of mankind. This year's recipient of the award, bestowed at commencement exercises by Board of Education President, Mr. Scott Rutherford, was Dr. John Rhodes Jr.

Dr. Rhodes was one of the founding members of the Brookville Community Scholarship Foundation, he served as its first President and he continues to serve on its board today. Dr. Rhodes participates each year in announcing scholarship winners at the graduation ceremony. As part of BCSF, Dr. Rhodes has directly been a part of the Foundation's award of over $1.6 million in scholarship money to Brookville graduates.

John is also a past president of the Brookville Chamber of Commerce and served as the general Chairman for 2 community picnics, a former President of the Dayton Dental Society and Board of Governors of The Ohio State University Dental Alumni Society. Dr. Rhodes was an active coach and a sponsor of baseball, softball, soccer, and wrestling teams in our community too numerous to count, as well as a supporter of many other local charities and causes. Dr. Rhodes is currently serving as President of the Montgomery County Public Health Board.

The Rhodes Family is extremely grateful to the Brookville Community for welcoming and embracing them as "Brookville Family" for the past 31 years. In the words of Dr. Rhodes: "If given the chance to do it all over again, I would RUN, not walk to Brookville to raise my family. Brookville is a wonderful community and we are eternally grateful to the Brookville Schools, the people and the Community."
Third Grade Clap Out
And Possibly a NEW Tradition
School districts may be one of the biggest culprits when it comes to harboring traditions.  Generations of alumni want to see that what brought them joy as schoolkids is experienced by their children and even grandchildren.  What has become a tradition just over the last decade is the third grade clap out. On the last day of school the kindergarten through second grade students line the hallways and applaud the third graders who walk through the building for the last time.  This 'send off' officially acknowledges that these students will be leaving for the intermediate school at the big house on Blue Pride Drive next year.  Many parents and grandparents have joined in the fun by assembling a tunnel behind the building to greet the third graders after being "clapped out" by their peers.  What a wonderful memory for all who participate.

3rd Grade Clap Out
3rd Grade Clap Out
Joining the third graders in their clap out this year were three very special people to Westbrook/Brookville Elementary School. Retiring para-professionals Kindra Esterline and Becky Dill along with retiring custodian Harry McCain joined the walk through. These three have a collective 77 years of service to our school district, most of which has been in the elementary.  It was very fitting that they joined the third graders in this final march.

And NEW This Year.....

Graduating college and career ready, career connections, positive modeling, learn-to-earn.  These subtle messages have become a common thread in our school district as we pursue our Mission Statement to " challenge, prepare and support all students to reach their full potential."  This year our graduating seniors captured the importance of impressing this message to their young peers by doing their own 'clap out' march.

Senior Clap Out 2016
Senior Clap Out 2016
Mrs Stephanie Hinds, the elementary principal kicked off the event by asking the classes of 2025, 2026, 2027 and 2028 to join her in honoring the class of 2016. Donning their caps and gowns, seniors then walked through the elementary to the claps and cheers of young children.  What a fantastic experience.  We appreciate the graduates taking time to positively role model success for our elementary age students.  We trust someday these elementary kids will do the same for future students.
Blue Devil Athletics
Conry and Schick Shine at State Track Meet
In the last weekend of the spring sports season the Blue Devils were amply represented at the OHSAA State Track and Field Meet. The meet took place this past weekend at Jesse Owens Stadium on the Ohio State Campus.

On Saturday afternoon BHS sophomore Spencer Schick participated in the men's 800 meter run. Schick entered the race having won the regional title race at Lexington High School near Mansfield, Ohio. While Spencer's time of 1:58:78 was off the pace he ran the week before, he still finished in 15th place in Division II in all of Ohio. It should be noted that Spencer was one of only two 10th grade qualifiers for this race. Everyone else was a junior or senior. This bodes very well for Spencer's future as a Brookville Track member. We congratulate him for an outstanding season and his state appearance.

Prior to that, on Friday morning, BHS senior Allie Conry concluded her high school athletic career by placing 3rd overall in the girls' Division II discus competition. In her third of six total throws, Allie launched the discus 138'09" to secure this high finish. Like Spencer, she entered as the Dayton regional titleist. Having been to the State Meet all four years of high school this was Allie's top performance and place and it is the culmination of a very decorated high school throwing career. We are proud of Allie and how she represented the blue and white in Columbus.

Congratulations to all our spring athletes on a great season and a special congratulations to Spencer and Allie for carrying our school into state competition!
School District Honors 2016 Retirees
On the final workday for faculty and staff, Brookville Schools took a few moments to honor four individuals who ended their current careers via retirement.  All have been significant contributors as Brookville School employees.  This year's retirees are:

Mr. Doug Orange - Mr. Orange has subbed and coached in the district over the last 13 years.  The last three years he was a contracted teacher in the high school instructing business and technology classes.  While a great help on the teaching staff, 'Coach' Orange will always be most remembered for his leadership with our high school softball program.  In 13 years he had a record of 241-93 including 5 league titles, 6 sectional titles, 4 district titles, 2 regional titles and 2 trips to the state final 4.  Doug's 2007 team was ranked #1 by the Associated Press in Division III.

Mr. Harry McCain - Mr. McCain worked 27 years for Brookville Schools as a custodian.  While the early years involved some other assignments, most will always remember Mr. McCain as the kind hearted, helpful elementary school custodian.  He took over for John Boehm at Westbrook Elementary and was instrumental in overseeing the move to the new Brookville Elementary in 2011.  Not only Mr. McCain's work, but maybe more so his caring disposition will be missed in our hallways.

Mrs. Becky Dill - Mrs. Dill will not be soon forgotten.  She became an icon in our elementary school. Over the last 25 years Mrs. Dill served in numerous roles that highlighted her versatility and abilities.  From playground supervisor to support of Action Based Learning there may not have been a paraprofessional duty that Becky didn't accomplish. However, probably most prominently, Mrs. Dill supported administration, staff and students in the world of technology. From break-fix to instruction of tech programs, she was instrumental in seeing an elementary building move into the new world of educational technology. Most recently, Mrs. Dill fostered the emergence of students having access to a technology lab.  We will sorely miss Mrs. Dill and her talents.

Mrs. Kindra Esterline - Mrs. Esterline served Brookville Schools for 25 years. The majority of her work was as a paraprofessional at the elementary school. Mrs. Esterline is always described by  her kindness and caring attitude with students. While supporting all students, she particularly had a soft spot for handicapped children. Kindra offered them needed attention each day. One of Mrs. Esterline's most prominent roles over the years was as advisor of the safety patrol.  She organized, directed and led safety patrol members as they helped children into and out of the building and across neighboring streets. We will have a void to fill in Mrs. Esterline's role in our schools.

Brookville Schools will miss the strengths and talents of these retirees. However, we are happy for them and wish them the very best in retirement!!
Where Are They Now?
Brookville Schools are proud of our series "Where Are They Now", which features profiles of past Brookville High School graduates. These graduates have responded to brief questions concerning their education or training after high school, their current occupation and their words of wisdom to the students in our buildings.

We are taking a break from the profiles over the summer months. We will be bringing this feature back in full force beginning with our August 22, 2016 edition.  In the meantime, please take a look at the  past profiles on our  website .
High Five's

Michael Lander
Many Blue Devil fans will remember that Michael was the Penn Station/Channel 2 Athlete of the Month in April. May 26, on live television, Lander was chosen from the eight monthly recipients as the Athlete of the Year! He has been a three sport star at Brookville excelling in football, swimming and baseball. Michael was also one of our valedictorians graduating with a 4.2 gpa. Michael received an additional $5,000 scholarship for being chosen and will use that to further his education as a mechanical engineering major at the University of Dayton. We would like to thank Penn Station, Channel 2 and HOT 102.9 for this award. You can see the presentation  here .

Devon Cook
Devon, also valedictorian, was recently notified that he this year's recipient of the Anthony Munoz Foundation's Scholarship Fund. This scholarship is awarded to a scholar/athlete who has demonstrated the desire to overcome adversity, has financial need, excels academically and fulfills a leadership role in the community. Applicants are from the Tri-State region around Cincinnati. Devon interviewed with the NFL Hall of Famer and members of the Foundation's Board of Trustees. He was awarded a $20,000 renewable scholarship which he will use to pursue a degree in Business and Finance at the University of Dayton next fall. Congrats, Devon!!  To find out more about the Foundation, click here.

2016 Graduates
We "High 5" the entire class of 2016. They are now Brookville Alumni of whom we can be very proud. As a class they earned over $2 million in scholarship money. These graduates leave us with great plans indicating they are either career or college ready.  We offer them Best Wishes and hope they always remember their connection to Brookville Schools!

Around Town
A couple of weeks ago Brookville Schools were happy to assist the Brookville Fire Department as they participated in training exercises with MedFlight, a medical helicopter sponsored by OSU, Ohio Health and Kettering Health Network. This medical helicopter is used to transport critical patients, similar to CareFlight.

Staff of MedFlight spoke with our fire fighters and EMTs about how this unit works and provided hands on access to the helicopter. Some of our elementary students were able to watch as the transporter arrived and left the school grounds. Take a moment to watch the landing and take off.

Brookville Schools are proud to work with the community and provide resources when possible.
