Summertime, and the living is... busy! AIA Kentucky is hard at work this month as we visit Hebron, Louisville and Versailles to present our annual code workshops with HBC and the Code Administrators Association of Kentucky. We are also collecting submissions and nominations for our Design and Service awards (deadlines June 20 and July 1) and continuing to put exciting details into place for our KY/IN Convention this fall. Plus we are working with leaders at AIA National on the effects of their Digital Transformation at the local level, which will result in a valuable new resource for Kentucky's members toward the end of this year. Annual Code Workshops: Two Dates Remaining!
|
|
Seats are still available for the Louisville and Versailles sessions in our annual Code Workshop series and you won't want to miss this opportunity. This year's workshop, which focuses on third party independent firestop inspections, is not your average day of continuing education. On top of providing 6 LU|HSW credits right when you need them, we have music, interesting demonstrations and prizes to win - but time is running out!

AIA KY Scholarship Awarded
|
|
CONGRATULATIONS to Oliver Hidalgo, who is the recipient of the 2016 AIA Kentucky Scholarship (supported by matching grant funds from AIA National). Oliver is a native of Chile who aspires to become a licensed architect and to provide affordable housing for low-income families. For more information about Oliver's background, click here.

The adoption of the 2016 KBC is in progress, with various task forces meeting late in June to determine their recommendations. Krisia Rosa, AIA reports that the Residential Task Force met on May 12 to review the 2015 IBC/IRC. The group reviewed an extensive summary of the 2015 IRC, which had been prepared by the Code Administrators Association of Kentucky and observed that many of the revisions made are in alignment with the recent trend in "tiny houses". Right now, the intent is to issue the next version of the KRC as a loose leaf binder, so that pages can be switched out as the code is amended. The Residential Task Force will begin meeting soon to review the proposed changes, and the group hopes to have recommendations ready for approval in August.
An AIA ad hoc committee led by David Carter, AIA is also reviewing proposed changes to the 2015 IBC for adoption and will present its recommendations to the HBC Code Revision Task Force this month. Joining David on the AIA committee are Eric Zabilka, AIA; Les Olson, AIA; John Warmack, AIA; Merrill Moter, AIA and Kevin Locke, AIA.
Kevin, who is AIA Kentucky's representative on the HBC Board, reports that the board is expecting to review all of the recommendations for the KBC at their August meeting and plans to have it to the LRC at the end of this year for possible adoption in May or June 2017.
Job Openings
In other news, HBC reports that architectural plan reviews are currently running 37 days. The office has recently hired two new plan reviewers and has posted an opening for another one, which they hope to fill shortly. HBC is also looking for two new field inspectors. These openings are posted at www.careers.ky.gov.

On May 18, 2016, the US Department of Labor ("DOL") issued its long-awaited Final Rule for overtime exemptions, after processing over 270,000 public comments on its proposed rule late last summer. The Final Rule will take effect December 1, 2016 and will:
- Raise the salary threshold indicating eligibility from $455/week to $913 ($47,476 per year), ensuring protections to 4.2 million workers.
- Automatically update the salary threshold every three years, based on wage growth over time, increasing predictability.
- Strengthen overtime protections for salaried workers already entitled to overtime.
- Provide greater clarity for workers and employers.

Kentucky architects and architectural students/interns are invited to participate in a design competition for a monument to be built in the Louisville area. This monument, which means "deep gratitude" in the Vietnamese language will be a place of special recognition for the tremendous sacrifices the American and South Vietnamese Armed Forces made during the Vietnam War in order to give the Vietnamese people a chance to live in freedom. The registration fee for students is just $35/ entry. Non-student registration is $75. The top three entries (as determined by the jury) will be awarded $4,000 each and the winning entry will be constructed in Louisville, KY. The University of Kentucky College of Design recently announced the appointment of Jeffrey Johnson, AIA as the new Director of the School of Architecture. Johnson joins the faculty from the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University where he was the founding director of the Asia Megacities Lab.
"I am thrilled to be joining the amazing team at the UK College of Design and look forward to working directly with the students and faculty of the School of Architecture at such an exciting time," said Johnson. "We have a great opportunity to build on the School's esteemed reputation as we continue its course as a leader in architectural education."
Johnson, who received his Master of Architecture in 1992 and his Bachelor of Architecture in 1990 from Ball State University, begins as Director of the School on July 1.

Destination Architect
The Architectural Experience Program (AXP) will launch on June 29, replacing what was formerly known as the Intern Development Program (IDP). To make sure that your firm's licensing advisor is up to speed on the six new experience areas, the new AXP e-Portfolio option and other helpful transition tools, visit the NCARB website.
Don't forget that the newest iteration of the Architectural Registration Exam (ARE 5.0) will also launch later this year. You can learn more about ARE 5.0 and prepare for this transition by following NCARB's ARE 5.0 blog series.
Sights on Success
AIA Kentucky's ARE Prep pilot program, Sights on Success, will wrap up this month with our final workshop on Schematic Design. We look forward to our discussion at Brandstetter Carroll, which will be led by Phil Schilffarth, AIA and we are grateful to our Allied Benefactor, Thermal Equipment Sales for sponsoring this last session. National Convention Updates
Many representatives from AIA Kentucky were in Philadelphia last month where the 2017 AIA National officers were elected.

Also at convention, members passed an amendment to the bylaws (section 2.313*) giving the Secretary of the Institute the authority to waive age requirement for Emeritus membership status. This authority would apply only to the age requirement for Emeritus status, would be exercised only on a case-by-case basis, and would permit waivers only "in exceptional circumstances and for adequate cause."
NEW AIA.org
Shortly before last month's national convention, the Institute launched the pilot for the new AIA website, which is being designed to deliver more personalized content to members in a platform that is faster and easier to navigate than the classic site. As an extension of this new platform, we are also in the process of developing a new website for AIA Kentucky! We are very excited to bring this to our members later this year and, in the meantime, we hope that you have fun exploring new.aia.org.
I Look Up Film Challenge
With the success of the inaugural I Look Up Film Challenge , the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has launched a new film challenge inviting filmmakers and architects to team-up to produce short films that demonstrates architecture as a solution. Registration is open now through July 10 for individuals who wish to participate. The challenge will run from July 18 to August 14. Winners will be announced in September 2016. We are so excited about what we have planned for the AIA KY/IN Convention September 15-17 in Lexington! We're excited to announce that we've confirmed three fantastic keynote presenters:

We're also in the process of finalizing a diverse collection of break-out education sessions focusing on design, practice and building science/technology. There'll be something for everyone from a learning standpoint (with lots of HSW credits), and many sessions will be presented by architects from throughout the region.
The opening night party on Thursday, June 15 will be the Big Ass Design Build Bourbon Blast, a collaboration with the AIA Central Kentucky Chapter and related industry associations that is a fundraiser for the ACE Mentor Scholarship Funds in Kentucky and Indiana, supporting high school students interested in architecture, engineering and construction. We've also just confirmed that our Friday evening Happy Hour will take place in the gardens at Botherum, the restored historic home of renowned landscape and garden designer Jon Carloftis, located a 5-minute walk from our convention headquarters at the Hyatt/Lexington Center. That's two fantastic evening events to put the finishing touches on two days of great education programming, awards presentations, exhibit hall and more. We're also planning a full morning of programs for associate members and emerging professionals (licensed less than 10 years) on Saturday morning of the convention, along with a couple of local tours.

Ticket sales for those wishing to attend the convention and/or the Bourbon Blast will open sometime in mid-July. Bourbon Blast tickets will be included in some convention registration packages, or may be purchased separately.
