James' Random Thoughts .........
Transition of Wealth Vital to Community Health

Small towns require reinvestment in the community to maintain or grow the local economy, opportunities, and quality of life.  For most people, their livelihood and estate begins with local economic opportunity.  We live here, shop here, and many of us work here.  Throughout our lives we use our time, talents, and resources to make a living for ourselves and our families.  As the baby boom generation finishes transitioning to retirement, many are looking for ways to give back to their hometowns, in addition to providing an inheritance for their family.  The transition of wealth from one generation to the next has a profound impact on the local economy.  Retaining and reinvesting resources in the local community is vital to sustaining the community.  However, once a local citizen passes, much of their estate leaves the community that fostered its creation.  As local resident, Shelia Biggs, put it "When people die, their kids are often not in the community.  The kids cash in the accounts at the bank and go home."

Wealth transfers in three directions: taxes (two things are certain in life - death and taxes), heirs (inheritance), and charity.  The transition of wealth significantly impacts the community when local philanthropy is not part of the equation.  The numbers are staggering.  According to the Community Foundation of Dickinson County, there will be approximately $482 million of wealth transferred from one generation to the next in Dickinson County by the year 2020 and $3.1 billion by 2064.  In this context, a "transfer of wealth" occurs when the final wishes of an individual are followed through and their wealth is distributed.

The Community Foundation's objectives are to encourage the establishment of permanent endowed funds that achieve the philanthropic intentions of donors.  Philanthropy is a very personal decision and funds are tailored to meet the donor's wishes.  Long-term investment of capital given by individuals, organizations, and corporations allows the Foundation to make grants to enhance the quality of life in the community, now and in the future.  These grants benefit youth, education, arts and culture, human services, health care, and the local economy.  The Community Foundation is certified in compliance with the National Standards of the U.S. Community Foundations Program for our high level of ethical and operational integrity, donor services, and accountability in the community foundation sector.

The Community Foundation of Dickinson County recently held their annual meeting and reported that their 2015 annual giving was over $500,000.  Since its inception, benefactor foundation funds have given $3.8 million to numerous grants benefiting the community.  Giving back to the community that fostered your livelihood ensures that you leave a legacy of your success for others.  The Community Foundation is a stable and high-integrity organization that makes this possible.
