Celebrating Our New Library:
Saturday, June 25
As soon as our beautiful new library building was ready to serve our patrons on March 21st, we opened the facility to the public. Now it's June, we've completed two full months of service in our new building, and we're ready to invite the community to take part in a formal ribbon-cutting event celebrating this latest addition to the municipal landscape.

We hope you'll join us from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, for the formalities of the ribbon-cutting, as well as for a celebration that will include music, refreshments, family activities and tours of the library. There are so many people to thank for this new facility -- but we promise to try our very best to keep the ceremony brief, and to place our emphasis on the welcoming celebration.

International Film Series Opens June 8,
Continues for Six Wednesdays

The Edgartown Library swings into June with a series of international films, presented on Wednesday evenings and continuing into mid-July. Screenings are at 7 p.m., the films are all free -- and this series is intended for adults. Here's the line-up:

Wednesday, June 8: Force Majeure
A prickly comedy for grown-ups, full of sharply observed moments, spectacular scenery and masterfully manipulated atmosphere. Directed by Ruben Östlund. (Sweden, 2014)

Wednesday, June 15: Mustang
A stunning debut feature by Deniz Gamze Ergüven about five sisters in rural Turkey that mixes comedy, tragedy, political anger and hope. (Turkey, 2015)

Wednesday, June 22: The Assassin
Hou Hsiao-hsien's historical drama, set in ninth-century China, fuses political struggles and family grudges into images so ravishing the plot seems irrelevant. (Taiwan, 2015)

Wednesday, June 29: The Second Mother
A comic drama that delights in the disruption of traditional upstairs/downstairs dynamics. Regina Casé is a standout in the title role. Directed by Anna Muylaert. (Brazil, 2015)

Wednesday, July 6: Human Capital
Combines the luxurious look of a classic wish-fulfillment fantasy with a stinging critique of capitalism's excesses and psychic costs. Directed by Paolo Virzi. (Italy, 2015)

Wednesday, July 13: The Beat That My Heart Skipped
Relying on the charisma of Romain Duris, the film is a mesmerizing portrait of a man torn by two very different sides of his personality. (France, 2005)
Book Club Meets  June 8

The Edgartown Library Book Club meets at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, to discuss  The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son on Life, Love and Loss. This book, made up largely of emails between news correspondent Anderson Cooper and his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, is the record of an extended conversation that brought mother and son closer together. The New York Times finds the book "a remarkably tender and frank undertaking."

All are welcome to participate. If you'd like us to secure a copy of the book for you to read, please call us at 508-627-4221 or visit the library desk.

Mario Kart Wii Competition
Is Set for June 21

In our program room on the library's awesome 80-inch wall screen, the Library will hold a Mario Kart Wii competition at 4 p.m. on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 21.

In case you're an out-of-the-loop grownup just wondering, Mario Kart is a series of video racing games that dates back to 1992 and has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide since then. If you're a potential race winner, you already know this game features valuable power-up items (ranging from mushrooms that add speed to banana peels that derail opponents) that you can win by driving into boxes along the course.

Spectators are welcome, but racers will need to sign up at the library front desk for this inaugural event. We'll hold a practice session for racers on Tuesday, June 14, from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Please Support the Library Friends, Who Support Us

All our programs at the Edgartown Library are supported by the Friends of the Edgartown Library, who have their own page on our website. We hope you'll consider supporting or joining the Friends today.

The annual meeting of the Friends of the Edgartown Library will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28, in the Program Room of the library. All are welcome -- this is a great opportunity to learn about the Friends, if you are interested, and to join.
