Kevin, Ronald, & Patrick |
Sussex County Habitat's Executive Director, Kevin Gilmore, recently welcomed guests from Habitat for Humanity International.
Robert Ongopa, Donor Relations Manager for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and Patrick Ettampola, Affiliate Tithe and Global Engagement Manager for HFHI joined Kevin and others for an informal lunch at the affiliate office. Attendees had the opportunity to listen to Ronald share about the good HFHI is doing in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. "What we are really building is so much more than just housing. Habitat is educating people, helping them to live healthier, and giving them the dignity they deserve."
Patrick shared about how Habitat's International Tithe Partners play a key part in this work. Patrick told us that many countries are able to do more with a small amount of tithe money than we would be able to do with it here. This is because of the materials used and the type of building they do. The homes are safe and clean but simple, and they are often built progressively as the homeowner is able to afford them. Tithe money also goes further because of the strength of the U.S. Dollar overseas.
In addition to what the Sussex County Affiliate has been able to accomplish here in Sussex County over the last 25 years, 10% of all non-restricted funds received are sent to our International Tithe Partner, Habitat Guatemala. Over the last 21 years (1995-2016), these funds have allowed us to indirectly serve 44 families there. Staff and volunteers have also directly served in Guatemala on mission trips as part of Habitat's Global Village program.
Thank you, Ronald and Patrick, for your service to Habitat International and for sharing with us. We enjoyed meeting you! Please come back soon!

Collegiate Challenge is Habitat for Humanity's year-round alternative break program that provides opportunities for students from youth groups, high schools, and colleges to spend a week of their school break building in partnership with a Habitat for Humanity affiliate in the United States.
Sussex County Habitat recently welcomed two great Collegiate Challenge groups from Maryland:
Montgomery College
and
St. Louis Parish's College Group in Laurel.
Some members of these groups cleaned a recently rehabilitated home and installed window unit air conditioners in Georgetown. Others painted and installed siding on two work sites in Laurel or two in Seaford.
The Montgomery students lodged in Bethany while St. Louis students stayed in Laurel.
The Boys and Girls Club of Seaford
also generously allowed the students to use their shower facilities. Both groups enjoyed a potluck appreciation dinner given by
St. Phillip's Episcopal Church,
where the students proudly donned their Collegiate Challenge t-shirts and mugged for the cameras. Many pledged to return for next year's challenge.
Habitat's Construction Site Manager, Jonathan Hastings, along with AmeriCorps Construction Crew Leaders, Lucie Rinker, Shannon Bull, and Gary Post, reported that the teams had another productive week thanks to these great Collegiate Challengers.
Thanks everyone! Please do come back and take the challenge with us again next year - and bring a friend or two.

Danielle Niethammer |
Congratulations to our Volunteer Coordinator and AmeriCorps Service Member, Danielle Niethammer! A recent survey asked Collegiate Challenge participants to rate their likelihood of recommending a Collegiate Challenge trip to a friend or a colleague. Habitat scored a 9.48 on a scale of 10. When asked to rate the likelihood of recommending serving with the Sussex County Habitat affiliate, we scored a 9.72! Sussex County scored very high because of our great volunteers, construction crew, staff members, and
AmeriCorps service members like Danielle who strive to make the experience a positive one for college student volunteers.
Danielle coordinates our many Collegiate Challenge groups. She schedules their assignments and accommodations, attends to their needs,
distributes t-shirts, and leads Opening and Closing Circles on the build sites. She talks to these groups about the importance of safety, Habitat's mission, and AmeriCorps service opportunities.
Danielle is also a full-time student at a local technical college where she is majoring in math with plans to teach.
