It happens!  LIfe gets in the way.  You miss a week at the gym, then two, then a few months pass by and before you know it, it's been a year (or more)!  How did that happen?  Well, we all know it happens and if this is you, we just want to say, "COME BACK"!  We have so much to offer in the Fitness Center on the second floor at HealthWorks.  If you find yourself thinking, "I just don't know where to start", let us help.  Come and be a part of our large group training class Xplode Training System (XTS).

Up/Downs & Spiderman Crunches:
This month we are highlighting Lacey teaching Plank Up/Downs & Spiderman Crunches.  Both of these moves are great "no equipment" exercises that target the core.   We recommend doing these exercises 3x a week starting with 30 seconds and working up to 1 minute straight for each.

HealthWorks Spotlight

Melissa Parnell
My weight loss journey began in 2014, after I received some bad news FROM blood work.  The results came back in the RED.  The Nurse Practitioner (NP) told me that I needed to lose weight.  My blood pressure, triglycerides, and cholesterol were all high.  As a 36 year old, it was a wake up call.  To add to that news, my weight was at 360 pounds. When I asked the NP about a "magic weight loss pill" she said, "NO, you will do this on your own with diet and exercise."  So I did...

In May of 2015, I had lost 100 pounds and was feeling great!  I did cardio...lots of cardio...6 days a week of cardio.  At work we had a small gym so I was able to walk, ride the stationary bike and also the elliptical.

In December of 2015, I went back to my NP for a yearly check-up and blood work.  I had lost 140 pounds by then and my blood work was great along with my blood pressure.  During this time, I hit a few plateaus so I asked her what to do.  She suggested I go to HealthWorks.  I joined that very month in December. Janet Presley did my evaluation and came up with an exercise plan of cardio and weight training.  I still do those things and have also added Body Pump.

I've lost 25 more pounds and have put on muscle since joining HealthWorks.  I love HealthWorks and love the amazing staff.  They are all very kind and helpful.  My weight loss journey has been nothing but hard work and dedication.  I cannot say it has been easy. However, I can say that it is rewarding.

The amazing staff at HealthWorks will make it as easy as possible for you.  No one judges or makes fun of you. They are all just glad you are there trying to improve your health.  If you are not a member, come join me and others at HealthWorks.  You won't regret it and you will feel and look FABULOUS!
Terry's Tips:
Core Training - no sit-ups allowed

Did you know that your core consists of more than just your abdominal muscles?  It is actually made up of any muscle that is directly connected to your pelvis, whether below or above it, and includes your hamstrings, glutes, and inner thighs.  Most movement comes primarily  from the hip joints, making the pelvis the central part of the skeleton.  That makes your hips fundamental to your health.  Your athletic ability, flexibility, balance, and strength all depend on your hips.

Your hips are part of your core and working these muscles can help prevent back pain and make you less susceptible to injury and disease.

So let's talk about some exercises that strengthen the core...no crunches needed.
