T he exhibition Known Unknowns is a survey of eight Chicago artists who are working to create new areas of possibility within the known confines of painting. Through experimentation with the materials of painting, the expansion of the definitions of what is traditionally defined as painting or by continuing to negotiate the status of the image within painting, the artists in Known Unknowns show us that there are still many unknowns when it comes to the possibilities of the painted surface.

Artists Include: Leslie Baum, Magalie Guérin, Anna Kunz, Steven Husby, Sherwin Ovid, Autumn Ramsey, Rebecca Shore and Craig Yu

Exhibition Reception: Saturday, June 4, 1-3pm
Closing Reception: Friday, July 29, 6-7:30pm

Rapid Pulse Celebrates Five Years of Performance Art

Defibrillator Gallery, June 1-5

Rapid Pulse celebrates its fifth year, a large feat for the non-profit organization that has been deemed "a small festival with a big heart."

The year's iteration will be packed with twenty-five performances over the course of five days (June 1-5), in honor of the anniversary. The multi-day event includes live performances in the main gallery at Defibrillator, durational performance installations in the storefront window, and performances outside in the surrounding neighborhood near Eckhart Park. The festival will also feature a video series, curated by assistant director Giana Gambino and Julia Laffin, and a new nightly experimental food series that hopes to foster discourse about the day's performances.

George Nakashima apprenticed in his ancestral Japan to learn "the finest traditions" of woodworking. Hans Wegner paradoxically helped to define Danish design with his Ming-inspired China Chairs for Fritz Hansen. And art historian Sarah Handler has drawn clear connections between Marcel Brauer's Wassily Chair-an icon of industrial modernism-and 17th century Qing and Ming Meditation Chairs.

Common Culprits of Art Damage: Causation & Prevention 101

Collectors take great pride in the quality of artwork in their collections, and often ensure they obtain proper insurance coverage to protect their assets against catastrophic events such as flood or fire.

While that is certainly a necessary step in the protection of a collection, it may surprise you to know that some of the most common causes of damage are latent culprits linked to how we choose to display and frame our artwork. Luckily, with proper foresight and preparation, most of this damage is preventable.
