April 2014

Dear fellow writer,

Hello! Welcome to the Attic Institute's regular feature, a "hot sheet" for writers (also available online).

The Attic Recommends brings you links to new and interesting things out there in the world of writing, including upcoming writing contests, publication news and leads, news from Attic alums, and recommendations for great reading.

140 Characters, Our Generation's Form?
Writing on/with/via Twitter has been getting a lot of buzz lately, thanks partly to novelist Teju Cole's re-tweet story (a narrative created by retweeting followers' tweets), which went viral earlier this year.

In this essay on NPR's code switch blog, Poet Kima Jones explores the opportunities of Twitter for language, especially as it relates to writers of color, including a crowd-sourced Twitter poem. And tech news site Mashable has compiled a list of 38 poets to follow on Twitter

And the first of many questions the Huffington Post asked a group of contemporary poets
(including Heather McHugh, David Lehman, Robert Pinsky and Laura Kasischke) is  " Do the internet and social media contribute to the well-being of poetry?" The second article in the series can be found here

Interviews of Writers & Essays

About Being Writers

You can read an excerpt of an interview with poet Mary Ruefle, author of the recent and much-loved collection of lectures Madness Wrack and Honey, at Music & Literature magazine's website.

Novelist Susan Straight writes in the LA Times on "what it takes to be a writer" about her experiences "learning to write without a room of one's own." Poet Richard Blanco tackles the "how did you decide to become a writer" question in the second of that series.

Another of the questions most commonly asked of a writer is, So what are you writing? Novelist Alice Mattison discusses her answer to that question, which is to keep what she's writing about a secret

And this is a lovely essay by poet Rick Barot on topics including Poet Rick Barot's essay on poetry, topics including William Carlos Williams, Barot's early jobs, and Robert Hass' "Meditation at Lagunitas."

PUBLICATION NEWS

Six classic Stephen King novels are being reissued in special editions with new introductions, new artwork, and additional features (such as, for Carrie, an essay about "the book's exploration of adolescent terror and sexuality"). And Meg Wolitzer is to soon publish a Young Adult Novel inspired by Sylvia Plath.

For Fun: Best Sentences, and Alice Munro on a coin

The American Scholar lists their Ten Best Sentences in Literature including sentences from Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried to Toni Morrison's Sula.

In between How Carrie Bradshaw Are You and Ten Reasons Ryan Gosling is a God, Buzzfeed highlighted a nice list of Small Magazines You Need to Start Reading Right Now.

And the Royal Canadian Mint has put a passage from Alice Munro's story "The Messenger" on a new collector's coin

AWARD WINNERS

The Guggenheim Fellowships were just awarded to 178 artists, recipients including Reed College creative writing professor Peter Rock. And here is a list of the Ainsfield-Wolf award winners (a $10,000 prize awarded to books and authors confronting racism and exploring diversity).

UPCOMING CONTESTS

Black Warrior Review's tenth-annual contest is open for submissions in poetry, fiction/prose, and nonfiction.

ATTIC INSTITUTE ALUMNI
PUBLISHING NEWS

Mark Friel has been accepted to the Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults. "Before I started my first writing workshop at the Attic," he says, "I had one simple goal: survive. I had never taken a writing course before and was certain that, not only was I the worst writer who ever spilled ink on the page, but everyone at the table would realize it instantly and cull me from the herd. I was wrong. I found myself surrounded by a group of supportive writers led by a patient, encouraging instructor. My first workshop with Emily Whitman-involving mostly in-class exercises-was so inspiring that I enrolled in two more with her: back-to-back workshops focusing on works-in-progress. The give-and-take sessions of reading and feedback were invaluable in helping me better understand why a particular scene was or wasn't working and how it could be improved, and teaching me tools for breaking impasse.  It was hard work, but totally worth it."

And another Emily Whitman student, Sandy Grubb, has won a contest at Rate Your Story for her story "30-Minute Superhero".
