10% Campaign
10
The 10% Campaign is a project of the Center For Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS).  The campaign encourages you to spend 10 percent of your existing food dollars to support North Carolina food producers, businesses and communities. Why 10%?  In North Carolina, we spend 35 billion dollars on food every year.  If we spend 10% of our food dollars on local product, we can infuse over 3.5 billion dollars into the local economy.  As avid supporters of the Durham Farmers' Market, you already know the many advantages to shopping locally.  So, why join the campaign?  It will re-affirm your commitment to shopping locally and it sends a strong message to policy makers about the importance of local foods!  For more information visit: www.nc10percent.com

Tomorrow at the market we will be hosting our annual Tomato Tasting Day. We'll be sampling nearly fifty varieties of tomatoes, so if you've ever wanted to try a Goldie, German Johnson, or Cherokee Purple tomato, tomorrow is the day! This year the event will be hosted by Shane Ingram of Four Square Restaurant. He will be making ketchup and desserts that feature tomatoes. We'll also be sampling some Chapel Hill Creamery mozzarella. You can vote for your favorite tomato and test your tomato knowledge with some trivia.

At Wednesday's tomato tasting, customers were surprised by the differences in flavor, color, shape, and size of the tomatoes we sampled. Favorites included Sungolds (yellow, sweet cherry tomatoes), Sunpeaches (similar to the Sungolds), Abe Lincoln's (a red heirloom slicing tomato), and Big Boy's (a great standard slicing tomato). Come to the market tomorrow to vote for your favorite!

Tomorrow we are launching our Double Bucks Program which will allow SNAP customers to receive double the amount of money they spend on tokens for purchases. This means that for each dollar a customer spends at the market, they will receive an additional dollar up to $10 per visit to spend at the Market. Thank you to all the market customers who have donated to make this program possible. We are working to raise $10,000 for this program. This will ensure the future funding of the Double Bucks Program. If you'd like to make make a tax deductible donation to the Double Bucks Program, please CLICK HERE.

Terra Clotha
Terra Clotha
The harried father looked through the glass into the rows and rows of newborn babies in the hospital nursery.  "That's my little girl," he said to the grandmotherly stranger standing next to him, pointing to a baby in the third row, fourth from left. "We dressed her first thing in a hand-dyed onesie we bought at the Durham Farmers' Market.  All the other little boys and girls are wearing blues and pinks.  Our baby is the only one wearing green." He beamed proudly, and the woman next to him nodded sagely, trying to determine whether her grand-niece was the infant in the second row, far left, or the fifth row, second from right.

Chapel Hill Creamery
Chapel Hill Creamery

We will have plenty of Fresh Mozzarella this week.  Celebrate tomato season and try varieties you've never had. Mix and match for a beautiful Caprese salad with yellow, pink, or deep red tomatoes. We had just that for lunch here at the farm recently. Our Jersey cow milk gives the cheese a rich flavor with a smooth, soft texture which compliments the tomatoes and basil. We will have some small Ciliegine as well as a good supply of Smoked Mozzarella. Try the smoked on a pizza, burgers, or in a pasta salad. Edible Piedmont has a recipe for grilled pizza with our Fresh Mozzarella in the current issue (see p.42 on this link).

We will also have Dairyland Farmers, our Carolina Moon, New Moon, Thunder Mt. Swiss,Calvander, Hickory Grove, Smoked Farmers, Pheta, and some of our Porter Cheese.

We have ground beef from steers we raised on pasture last fall into spring. Jersey meat is not a typical beef animal but the meat gets high ratings on flavor and tenderness in blind taste tests. We will also have London broil, brisket, and liver.

Sausages are available with mild and spicy seasonings. They include the hams for extra flavor and we have found our own source of herb mixes so we can choose ones we think you will like. Hot Italians back in stock and is popular for its mildly hot seasoning. Try some as an entre or in that freshly made pizza. If you would like Pork Spare Ribs please call by 11:00 the day before the market to place an order. They are about 4.5 lbs at $5.00 per pound. The full racks are hard to fit in our coolers with all the other meat so we only bring one at a time, but they are great on the grill so try some soon.
