MVA MAKES CHANGES IN DRIVERS LICENSE PROCESS

The Maryland Motor Vehicles Administration is making some changes for security reasons to the Maryland driver's license design which will become one of the most secure in the nation.   But in addition to changes in how the card looks and the increased security features, I thought you might want to be aware of a few administrative changes as well.  After July of this year, you will not be able to pick up a new license at any MVA facility.   I have reprinted the details from the MVA: 

 

MVA will begin printing/mailing the new secure cards on June 20, 2016, for all learner's permits and new ID cards, and for licenses/ID cards renewed via web, kiosk and U.S. mail.  On July 11, 2016, everyone applying for a new driver's license, learner's permit and ID card will receive the new, more secure cards. 

 

It is important to know that customers will not receive these new cards during their visit to the MVA.  The new products willbe mailed to customers within 7 to 10 business days.

 

The MVA offers the option to receive cards the next day through the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), which charges for expedited delivery.  Because customers will receive their new card in the mail, we strongly encourage Marylanders to ensure their correct address is on file at the MVA, which is consistent with Maryland law.  The USPS does not forward MVA mail.  Customers, who need to update their address, should visit www.mva.maryland.gov and type "address change" in the search box.  In addition, the MVA offers the option to provide a mailing address if a customer is unable to receive mail at their residential address.

The new cards also meet all state and federal standards and are REAL ID compliant - just like our current products.  Additionally, Veterans now have the opportunity to have the VETERAN designation appear on the front of their license or ID card.  This is long overdue recognition for the dedicated men and women who bravely serve, and have served, our country.

 

To further enhance safety and security, all new products will be printed and mailed from a high-security MVA facility.  A similar process is used to deliver U.S. Passports, credit cards and other important documents.  Currently, 40 percent of all Maryland driver's license and identification cards are mailed from a central MVA location.  Printing and mailing cards from a central location enhances security by limiting access to card materials, equipment and personal information.  More than 30 other states currently mail their driver's licenses and ID cards to customers.
