WDO Decision on Paint and Battery ISPs Released

Dear :

Waste Diversion Ontario (WDO) announced late today that it has approved the Industry Stewardship Plan (ISP) from Product Care Association (Product Care) for paints and coatings, and did not approve the ISP from Call2Recycle Canada for single-use batteries. WDO has stated that the effective date of Product Care's stewardship plan for paints and coatings will be no earlier than June 2015.

Stewardship Ontario will take some time to assess what impact these decisions will have on the MHSW program and on stewards. We will keep all MHSW stewards informed during this process.

Stewardship Ontario will work with WDO and Product Care to ensure a smooth transition of the program with as little impact to stewards as possible.

Regarding single-use batteries, Stewardship Ontario is committed to continuing its work with battery stewards to increase recycling rates of single-use batteries in the province, and ensure as much material as possible is reclaimed for re-use. We look forward to building on our collective successes of the past two years, which has seen battery recovery rates increase by a combined 26%.
