Signing Ceremony
Ashley with Kevin
We welcomed another new partner family! Ashley currently resides in Bridgeville with her two boys, ages 6 and 7. She works as a traffic flagger. During the signing ceremony, we pledged to do all we can to help her fulfill the requirements for Habitat homeownership which include completing the Partner Family curriculum, saving for closing costs, and putting in hundreds of hours of sweat equity. Congratulations, Ashley! We look forward to a great partnership with you!
How-to Clinics

Thank You
Women Build Team - April 30, 2016

Thank you to our National Women Build Sponsor, Lowe's! During Women Build Week - April 30th through May 7th - Lowe's Heroes employee volunteers, Habitat and AmeriCorps volunteers, and Team Rubicon built alongside Sussex County Habitat's Partner Families at Ingram Village in Ellendale, DE. Sussex County was just one of 300 affiliates from across the country to participate in this year's Build. Our volunteers were joined by 17,000 others nationally who were also building during the week. More than 80,000 women from all 50 states have now volunteered during the eight previous National Women Build Week events.

Lowe's will also be presenting Free How-to Clinics at the ReStore on June 18th as another important part of the National Women Build Project. The Women Build Project is about empowering women not excluding men. It sends the message that everyone can help Habitat impact the global housing crisis by getting involved in their local communities. Women can use construction skills to help Habitat build stability and self-reliance through shelter. No matter one's age, gender, race, creed, or skill-level Habitat welcomes your assistance. This is what our founder, Millard Fuller, called the The Theology of the Hammer. Great job, everyone! #Lowe'sHeroes #AmeriCorpsGetsItDone

Women Build Team - May 7, 2016
Thank you to all who attended the Walt Jones Memorial Project's Annual Auction Night at Bethany Blues in Lewes. Guests were treated to free admission, complimentary appetizers, and special happy hour pricing. Vocalist, Paul deWolfe, the entertainer for the evening, performed great songs from Elvis and Sinatra among other classics. Participants bid on silent and live auction items and took a chance on the Wall of Wine. Auction items included an afghan handmade by Mrs. Walt Jones, several woodcraft items by our Executive Director, Kevin Gilmore, and a beautiful sapphire necklace from Holland Jewelers. Tom Protack generously served once again as our auctioneer. Guests also had the opportunity to take a chance on our Grand Raffle - A Golfer's Tour of the area's finest courses. We appreciate our many Friends of Habitat: sponsors, donors, volunteers, committee members, and bidders who worked together to once again make the evening a great success!

Thank you to the family of Walt Jones, who once again generously donated the use of Midway Par 3 Golf Course  for our Annual Golf Outing. Thanks also to our event sponsors and supporters including;  Poore's Propane , Cape Gazette Dry Zone , State Farm, and  Bethany Blues .  Many Friends of Habitat and of the Jones Family also sponsored holes or tees, purchased Mulligan's, and/or took a chance to win a Golfer's Tour of the areas finest courses. 20 teams played a full - albeit very soggy - morning or afternoon round of golf for a great cause. Guests enjoyed cold beverages provided by Dry Zone and lunch prepared by Bethany Blues. A special highlight of the day came when Sean Jones, grandson of the late Walt Jones and founder of the event, got a hole in one and cheers erupted from onlookers! Thank you, everyone!

Thank You, Millsboro Middle School Volunteers

Above: AmeriCorps service member, Heather, leads some very special volunteers from Millsboro Middle School. The children recently came out to the Habitat offices in Georgetown to help weed, mulch, and plant as part of a spring spruce up day. They also helped to build and stain a picnic table for lunchtime use by the Habitat staff and volunteers. Great job, everyone! #HabitatYouthRocks #AmeriCorpsGetsItDone

Spotlight On ...
Kerry Davies
Thank you to Kerry Davies, for her nine years of service to Sussex County Habitat. We wish her every happiness in her next chapter.

Kerry earned her degree in accounting from Wilmington College. She began her service with Sussex County Habitat for Humanity in 2007 part-time as bookkeeper.  As the affiliate grew so did Kerry's role as Office Manager. Over time, Kerry became a t ouchstone for the many families we serve. Her's was often the first face or voice potential partners and volunteers encountered at Habitat. Often, long after their homes were built, Kerry maintained contact with Partner Families, checking in with them as they paid their mortgage payments each month.

"It's been a privilege to watch the affiliate grow. When I first got here we were building just three houses a year. It is rewarding to see the impact we have had on so many of these wonderful families."

Now that she's no longer managing the busy office, Kerry reports she is enjoying spending time with her fiance and caring for her dachshunds.
