"Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement. To get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. Everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible; never treat life casually. To be spiritual is to be amazed."
[Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel]
Taking time for Shabbat each week, a break in our typical schedule, a chance to rest, reflect, and renew ourselves, provides us with an opportunity to pause (even if just briefly) to fully experience the moments that tend to pass us by so quickly. Our Torah portion this week reminds us of the importance of the Sabbath - not only for ourselves, but for the land too. It speaks of the sabbatical year, and how every seven years we must not work the earth, but allow it to rest and renew itself as well. And, the portion then goes on to speak of the Jubilee Year, and we come upon the quote from Torah that is found on the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia - "Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." For true freedom is not just about enjoying the rights we have, but granting everyone the rights and privileges we claim for ourselves. This Friday evening, Cantor Hochman and I will be joined by our Chavurah Ensemble and musicians for our Erev Shabbat service beginning at 8:00 pm.
Our service will also include a "Ceremony of Welcome" as we, as a congregational family, serve in the sacred role of witnesses in celebrating the Conversion to Judaism of one of our newest members, Jennifer Raskin. Shabbat morning, Torah Study will be led by Rabbi Michaleski in the chapel beginning at 9:00 am. And, at 10:30 am, our Spice Up Your Judaism program will be led by Scott Kushner on the topic of "Inner Judaism." We will also have Shabbat morning services at 10:30 am, and Shabbat afternoon services at 5:45 pm. Sunday evening (5:00 pm), we have the honor of celebrating Steve and Linda Angstreich as our 2016/5776 M'kor Or Leadership Award Recipients. Steve and Linda have been, and continue to be, Sources of Light within our congregation and in the community, and we look forward to the opportunity to offer our thanks and blessings to them! And, I hope to see everyone TONIGHT (7:00 pm) for our Annual Meeting, as we vote in our Executive Committee and Board of Trustees members, honor our outgoing trustees and officers, celebrate our Service Award recipient, and, of course, get to watch the always highly anticipated Year-in-Review video (thanks to Steve Janove!). Another wonderful week of celebration ahead! B'shalom, Rabbi Jennifer L. Frenkel
If you wish to have a Mi Shebeirach said during our Shabbat services, please let us know by noon each Friday so we can give the names to the rabbis. |

Our sanctuary Stained Glass Windows became a reality because of Linda and Steve - from the design and fund-raising campaign to personal support of their completion. Linda even needle-pointed the design as a Torah cover, along with a beautiful work of art on display in the Dedicatory Alcove.

Smerconish Comments on
Partisan Politics... In the 1980's, 60% of the Senate was composed of moderates... today every Republican is more conservative than every Democrat and every Democrat is more liberal than every Republican. Too many politicians are taking their cues from the men with the microphones.
