Tulane named finalist for $100,000 innovation award

Tulane University has been named one of three finalists for the inaugural Excellence in Innovation Award, a $100,000 honor bestowed by the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
Tulane was chosen as a finalist for the award based on the impact of its Phyllis M. Taylor Center for Social Innovation and Design Thinking. Established in 2014, the center brings Tulane faculty, students and researchers together to work collaboratively on practical solutions to real-life problems in the environment, education, heath care and more.
The finalists, selected by a jury of emeritus presidents and provosts, were chosen from a pool of six semifinalists representing multifaceted projects at institutions across the nation. Each institution was assessed on the project's ability to achieve meaningful, measurable outcomes to create systemic large-scale change.
"We are very pleased to be named as a finalist in this program," said Kenneth Schwartz, director of the Taylor Center and dean of the Tulane School of Architecture. "Tulane has focused on innovation for a long time, with considerable momentum developing through a number of specific initiatives emanating from the center."
Tulane joins Arizona State University and California State University at Fullerton in competing for a $100,000 prize for achievement in finding powerful answers to important local, regional, national or global challenges. The winner will be announced Monday, May 16.
"The quality of applications for the inaugural Excellence in Innovation Award presented the jurors a true challenge, each portfolio offering evidence of the creative, sustainable innovations being developed regularly on campuses from coast to coast," said Phi Kappa Phi Executive Director Mary Todd.
The other three semifinalists were The Evergreen State College, James Madison University

CITY URGES RESIDENTS TO GET PREPARED DURING NATIONAL HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS WEEK

NEW ORLEANS - As part of National Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 15-21), City of New Orleans officials are urging all New Orleans residents to get prepared and stay informed as hurricane season approaches on June 1. The City is committed to ensuring the safety of all residents, and the public is encouraged to help spread the word and make the entire community better prepared.

"Now is the ideal time to develop a plan for your family, school or business about what to do in the event of a hurricane," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "New Orleans is no stranger to natural disasters, which is why we strongly encourage every resident to take action now and plan ahead."

Get Prepared
Develop a plan in advance to ensure that every family member knows what to do, who to call and where to go during an emergency.
  1. Designate an out-of-town contact that household members can call if separated during an emergency. Ensure all family members memorize it.
  2. Choose a pre-determined place to reunite if separated during an emergency. Have one near home and one outside your neighborhood. Your predetermined contact will help you decide and communicate which is best.
  3. Stock Up. Disasters can strike at any time and in many forms which may not require residents to evacuate, but would require them to shelter in place without power, running water or access to groceries. Gather Supplies for what you'll need to weather events from boil advisories to chemical spills to Category 1 or 2 hurricanes.
  4. Practice alternate routes out. In a disaster roads may be blocked, buses and city transportation shut down or re-routed, or streets impassable. Each family member should know all possible exit routes from you home and your neighborhood.
  5. Know how you will evacuate in the case of a man-made or natural disaster, whether it be through contraflow in your own car, or locating the closest evacuspot, where you can get transportation assistance out of town.

Stay Informed
The City offers multiple ways to stay up-to-the minute on information and get prepared. By visiting ready.nola.gov, residents can sign up for NOLA Ready alerts, which will notify residents of emergency situations including, but not limited to, evacuation information; chemical spills; shelter-in-place alerts; weather advisories; and, infrastructure issues, such as boil water advisories. Residents can tailor the alerts to specific locations, types of alerts and on which devices they will be notified.

Residents may also get accurate, up-to-the-minute information and safety tips during an emergency by following NOLA Ready on Twitter (@NOLAReady). So far, more than 100,000 people have signed up for some type of NOLA Ready emergency alert.

Residents may also get more information about how to prepare for emergency situations, such as a suggested disaster supply kit for every household, at www.ready.gov.

Special Needs Registry
The City is also encouraging individuals who require special assistance during emergencies to enroll in its Special Needs Registry. The registry does not guarantee assistance, but allows first responders to appropriately plan for, prepare for and respond to community needs.

The Special Needs Registry includes all individuals, regardless of age, with a chronic condition, disability, special healthcare need, or who may require additional assistance during an emergency. These include those who:
  • Use life support systems such as oxygen, respirator, ventilator, dialysis, pacemaker, or are insulin dependent;
  • Have mobility disabilities and use a wheelchair, scooter, walker, cane, or other mobility device;
  • Are visually impaired, blind, hard of hearing, or deaf;
  • Have speech, cognitive, developmental or mental health disabilities; and,
  • Use assistive animals or a prosthesis.
A family member, caregiver, or authorized representative can enroll an individual on their behalf. Residents may enroll in the Special Needs Registry by calling 3-1-1 or by visiting ready.nola.gov .

Local Leaders "Compete for Receipts" with the District Donuts Streatcar
100 percent of proceeds benefit local kids in foster care through Crossroads NOLA

WHAT:                         Three of our community leaders will compete in a Parish Showdown via the District Donuts Streatcar, complete with local sweets and cuisine, to benefit New Orleans children in the foster care system.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu, St. Tammany Parish President Pat Brister and Jefferson Parish President Mike Yenni will be pitted against one another to sell the most donuts, sliders and coffee at their respective locations throughout the area - with all proceeds being donated to Crossroads NOLA , a local nonprofit serving children in foster care.

In addition to serving great food, the District Streatcar helps to connect local children and teens in foster care with families. District began the initiative #WeDontServeKids to highlight this vulnerable population that is often overlooked and underserved. The ultimate goal is that loving, caring and intentional families will open their homes and lives to these children in need.

WHEN/WHERE:           Pat Brister: Friday, May 13
                                                11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
St. Tammany Parish Complex, 21490 Koop Drive, Mandeville, 70471

Mayor Mitch Landrieu: Tuesday, May 17
9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Energy Centre, 1100 Poydras Street, New Orleans, 70112

Mike Yenni: Friday, May 20
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Jefferson Parish Government Building, 1221 Elmwood Park, Harahan, 70123

WHY:                                     This year, nearly 7,000 Louisiana children will spend time in foster care. 54 percent of kids who spend at least one year in foster care experience three different placements. These children have been removed from their homes because of abuse, neglect, or abandonment that is no fault of their own - making them the most vulnerable in our society.

To offer resources aimed at combatting this issue and finding solutions to the growing problem, 100% of profits derived from District's Streatcar support Crossroads NOLA. The combined initiative, #WeDontServeKids , brings light to the largely unnoticed needs of children in foster care situations and the impact caring and loving families can have on these children.

 Danie's Stuffed Tomatoes
We're revisiting this fabulous recipe because creole tomatoes are back in the market. Try this stuffed tomato recipe with both yellow and red tomatoes to impress the crowd gathered around the dining room table.
Market Ingredients
  • 2 slices of fresh bread
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 4 pounds juicy tomatoes
  • 1 medium onion, minced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 8 ounces button mushrooms, wiped clean, trimmed, and diced
  • 1 ¼ lbs. fresh ground pork
  • 2-3 Tablespoons fresh thyme and/or oregano
  • 1 cup loosely packed fresh parsley
  • 2 large eggs
Pantry Ingredients
  • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Directions
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Tear the bread into bite size pieces and place it in a small bowl. Cover it with milk, press the bread down so it is completely covered, and let it sit until it has absorbed all the milk, about 30 minutes.
Slice the top off of each tomato and reserve it. Remove the seeds and most of the inner flesh and discard. Lightly season each tomato inside with salt and pepper.
Heat the oil with the onions and garlic in a medium skillet over medium heat. Cook, stirring, until the onions are translucent, about 8 minutes. Season with salt and pepper and transfer to a medium-size bowl. Add the mushrooms to the pan and cook, stirring occasionally until tender 5 to 6 minutes. Transfer to the bowl of onions and garlic.
Add the bread and milk to the ingredients in the bowl, along with the pork. Add the fresh herbs along with the eggs. Blend the mixture thoroughly but not overly, using your hands. Season with salt and pepper and blend well. Cook a teaspoon of the mixture and taste for seasoning, adjust if necessary.
Evenly divide the stuffing among the tomatoes, pressing it firmly into them, and mounding it above the edges of the tomato if necessary. Place the tops of the tomatoes atop the stuffing and bake until they become deep gold, the stuffing is completely cooked, and the tomatoes are tender, about 1 hour.

Thousands of Acute and Critical Care Nurses Gather in New Orleans for AACN's Annual Conference AACN's National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition features evidence-based best practices in patient care, newest healthcare technology and more May 16-19 in New Orleans

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses ( AACN) brings together thousands of nurses this week in New Orleans at its annual National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition ( NTI, #NTI2016) with the theme "Courageous Care."

AACN expects attendance to reach 8,000 nurses and include many at the forefront of research, academia, staff development and management.
The premier annual event for critical care nursing, NTI continues through May 19. The conference offers hundreds of sessions to improve clinical practice, patient outcomes and the hospital's bottom line with a comprehensive program that incorporates the best evidence-based education.
Most of the 280-plus sessions will take place at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, with the nearby Sheraton New Orleans Hotel also hosting official events.

There will be more than 400 exhibits spread over 300,000 square feet that encompass the latest healthcare equipment, devices, supplies and career opportunities.
Conference sessions represent the best clinical education reflecting today's diverse critical care environments. Topics include:
* Eliminating healthcare-associated infections and medical errors
* Improving patient outcomes and financial savings with nurse-led innovations
* Understanding the benefits and risks of healthcare technology
* Integrating new research findings into evidence-based patient care
One of the key sessions at the conference will be the NTI Summit, which addresses nurse staffing and its impact on the work environment. "Staffing Through the Lens of HWE: Many Shades of Gray" will explore the relationship between barriers to practice, current staffing methodologies and healthy work environment standards. A diverse group of expert panelists will also share potential strategies to manage the challenges of staffing and barriers to practice. The interactive half-day event will be held Wednesday, May 18, from 12:30 to 4:45 p.m.
Among the learning opportunities, NTI offers more than 55 sessions specifically for clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners and other advanced practice nurses. These Advanced Practice Institute preconferences and concurrent sessions address leadership role development, public policy, healthcare reform, clinical systems and pharmacology.
Participants can earn up to 34 hours of continuing education during NTI. As an added value, attendees registered for the full conference will receive free online access to certification review courses, webinars and recorded sessions from previous NTIs during the conference. After NTI, more than 170 recorded sessions from NTI 2016 will be available online through July 31 to extend the on-site learning offered during the conference.
The complete conference program with all educational sessions and special events offered in New Orleans is available online.

History Channel's newest miniseries "ROOTS" will be airing on Memorial Day weekend, but before it does, you can be the first to experience the powerfulness that it is. Ashlee Nicole Spills and History Channel & A+E Studios affiliates have partnered to give you the chance to check out the series before everyone else does.
We all (or some of us) have seen the legendary 1977 series based on the best-selling novel by Alex Haley. Today, HISTORY's re-creation will bring an inspiring new vision and new life to this powerful story. LeVar Burton, who played Kunta Kinte in the original "ROOTS", is the Co-Executive Producer of the four-night, eight-hour event series that features an outstanding cast, including Forrest Whitaker ("Fiddler"), Laurence Fishburne ("Alex Haley"), Jonathan Rhys Meyers ("Tom Lea"), Anika Noni Rose ("Kizzy"), Anna Paquin ("Nancy Holt"), Tip T.I. Harris ("Cyrus"), Derek Luke ("Silla Ba Dibba"), and new faces Regé-Jean Page ("Chicken George") and Malachi Kirby ("Kunta Kinte").
NIGHT ONE of "ROOTS" begins in 1750 in the port city of Juffure, in the river region of The Gambia in West Africa, where Omoro Kinte and his wife, Binta, have their first child, a son named Kunta. As a member of the highly esteemed Kinte family, Kunta is trained in Mandinka customs and traditions. He is a dedicated student who dreams of traveling to the university in Timbuktu to become a scholar. Kunta passes his warrior training, an important Mandinka rite of passage, but soon after he is betrayed by a rival family and brutally and suddenly his life is forever altered.
"ROOTS" is a historical portrait of American slavery recounting the journey of one family's will to survive, endure and ultimately carry on their legacy despite enormous hardship and inhumanity. The story of Kunta Kinte and the women and men who came after him echoes through the history of millions of Americans of African descent, and reveals powerful truths about the universal resilience of the human spirit.

Book Club: Yellow Jack by Josh Russell
May 17 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Hailed by reviewers as "an electrifying debut" (Baltimore Sun) and "perhaps the best evocation of New Orleans ever to appear in print" (Richmond Times-Dispatch), Yellow Jack has given Southern literature its own intoxicating hybrid of Caleb Carr, Flannery O'Connor, and Vladimir Nabokov. Russell's "virtuoso storytelling, evocative prose and original conception mark [his first book] as a significant work that we can only hope will be followed by many more" (Chicago Tribune). Yellow Jack is a ribald, picaresque trip through an 1840s New Orleans saturated with sex, drugs, death, and corruption. In this "luminously haunting" (Entertainment Weekly) portrait of decadence, daguerrotypist Claude Marchand becomes hopelessly entangled with both a voodoo-adept octoroon mistress and the erotically precocious daughter of a prominent New Orleans family. "Russell has distilled the New Orleans of the mid-1800s, the terrible fever of the title, and the savage lives of the characters into a novel of terrible beauty."-Nashville Scene
Join Ogden Museum docent and former teacher Maureen O'Dwyer for a lively discussion about Southern art, literature and culture. This club will meet approximately every 6 weeks. Members may arrive at 5:30 p.m. Discussion will begin at 6 p.m. and last approximately one hour.

CITY TO HOST NEW ORLEANS SUMMER CAREER PATHWAYS PROGRAM ORIENTATION

NEW ORLEANS - the City's Network for Economic Opportunity and JOB1 will kick off its New Orleans Summer Career Pathways Program orientation to provide training and employment opportunities in the advanced manufacturing and energy sectors.

In October 2014, the U.S. Department of Labor committed $8.2 million to support workforce development and training in New Orleans. Of that, a $5.8 million competitive grant went to the City of New Orleans Office of Workforce Development and a $2.4 million grant went to Delgado Community College for workforce development.

The City has leveraged the grant to improve the delivery of workforce training services, facilitate cooperation across federal, state and local workforce programs and funding streams and expand partnerships within industry sectors to develop programs that reflect current and future skill needs.

The City's Office of Workforce Development is working with a variety of training providers and community partners and organizations to customize training programs for local workers interested in obtaining certification in trades in the advanced manufacturing and energy sectors. In addition to education and skill training, participants will be provided with the wrap-around supportive services needed to increase completion and experience in real work settings to gain nationally recognized industry certifications.

. Each orientation will last from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Career training will be offered in industrial maintenance, electrical and pipefitting.

Both grants, as part of Department of Labor's Workforce Innovation Fund, seek to improve job training programs across the country. Delgado was one of 270 community colleges around the country who received a total of $450 million in federal job-driven training grants. This funding was part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) competitive grant program, which is co-administered by the Department of Labor and Department of Education.

Pam Tyler - NEW ORLEANS WOMEN AND THE POYDRAS HOME
Join us when historian Pam Tyler presents and signs NEW ORLEANS WOMEN AND THE POYDRAS HOME: More Durable Than Marble.
A two-hundred-year-old institution, the Poydras Home-originally the Poydras Asylum-stands as an exemplar of woman-led charitable organizations. In a thorough and engaging narrative, Pamela Tyler offers the first complete history of this remarkable New Orleans establishment from its founding as an orphanage for young girls to its present-day operation as a retirement community and assisted-living facility. Throughout, Tyler paints a vivid picture of the many women who faced down the challenges of war, disease, natural disaster, social unrest, and restrictive gender ideals to realize the mission of the Poydras Home.
Drawing on previously unreleased archival material, Tyler documents how the institution's benefactor, Julien Poydras, used his immense wealth to support a haven for impoverished girls, and how the dedicated women of the Poydras board pursued that ambition through more than just residential services. Tyler reveals that the majority of the Poydras "orphans" had one living parent, and it was dire poverty and a dearth of social services in New Orleans that drove single parents, usually mothers, to place their daughters in the asylum. Further research demonstrates that the Poydras went beyond simply providing a shelter for the children of distressed parents; volunteer managers worked to shape their charges' character through an emphasis on morals, education, and the fundamentals of housewifery.
Following the institution from its antebellum origins to Reconstruction, through the Progressive era, and into the obsolescence of children's homes in the mid-twentieth century, Tyler highlights the impacts of both national affairs and daily life on the charity. This rich history winds through the last fifty years as the Poydras Home boldly and successfully changed its mission to provide care for elderly men and women.
The result of years of research, New Orleans Women and the Poydras Home is a sweeping social history that recognizes the determination of women caregivers and the thousands of lives they benefited.
Pamela Tyler is associate professor of history at the University of Southern Mississippi and author of Silk Stockings and Ballot Boxes: Women and Politics in New Orleans, 1920-1963.

    $8 General Admission

    SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL
    Director JEAN-LUC GODARD
    Year 1968
    Runtime 100 MINUTES
    Country UK
In concert with the CAC's exhibition, Adam Pendleton: Becoming Imperceptible, the CAC and NOFS are proud to present Jean-Luc Godard's Sympathy for the Devil. The model for Pendleton's 2012 film, BAND (chronicling the band Deerhoof in the context of contemporary politics), Godard's film uses the leitmotif of the Rolling Stones at work on their song Sympathy for the Devil at the original 1968 recording sessions to document both the band's creative process and a narrative of revolutionary thought and action.
Featuring the original Rolling Stones line-up of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, and Brian Jones, the film-Godard's first English language feature-was originally released in 1968 at the culmination of a year of political and social upheaval throughout the western world.
As the band-augmented by Nicky Hopkins, Rocky Dijon, Marianne Faithfull and Anita Pallenberg-works to nail down the definitive version of the song, the film's plot casts a jaundiced eye on U.S. politics as viewed through the prism of the counter culture and Black Power movement.

We're thrilled you're attending Don Quixote soon!
Now here are some important things you need to know:

    1. Seating is Bring-Your-Own. Think of this like attending a music fest. You bring what you'd like to sit on. Blankets and foldable chairs are best. We reserve the areas closest to the stage for blankets and any patrons that wish to sit on the grass, and then mark an are behind that where chairs can begin setting up. Please obey these signs and be courteous to your fellow patrons :)

    2. We have food and drink! At each performance, we will have at least two food trucks parked in front of the circle drive in front of the garden for you to get anything you'd like to eat during the show. We will also have a bar for beer, wine, and cocktails available in the garden for your convenience. For this reason, we do not allow outside food or drink to be brought into the garden. Everything you need will already be there!

    3. Bring bug spray. It is springtime in New Orleans and mosquitos can be out. It's probably a good idea to bring some spray if you feel the itch. We will also have some available at the box office. But please be aware that we do not allow bug candles into the garden, only spray!

    4. Garden opens at 6PM. This is when we will open the garden and allow for patrons to begin setting up their chairs and blankets. For this particular production, we will be performing in the back Oak Grove of the garden and the show will all take place in one single location, so no moving during the show.

    5. Rain Plan.  If a production is called off due to inclement weather, attendees will be notified no later than 5pm via email with instructions on selecting another date or requesting a refund. But we do a daily no-rain dance, so we hope this will never happen!

Thank you again for purchasing a ticket. We really think you are going to enjoy this zany adaptation of one of the greatest stories ever told!

The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare" at Tulane University's Newcomb Gallery

    WHEN:           Wednesday, May 18, 2016
                            Extended exhibition viewing: 5:30-6 p.m.
                            Lecture: 6 p.m.

HOW:             Admission is free and registration is recommended. To make reservations, call (504) 523-4662 or email [email protected]. More details are available at www.hnoc.org .

WHY:              On Wednesday, May 18, at THNOC's Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres St., Xavier University Assistant Professor of English Oliver Hennessey will discuss Shakespeare's influence on New Orleans art and culture. The program is free. Reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling (504) 523-4662 or emailing [email protected].
Shakespeare emerged as a cultural rallying point within the developing Anglo-American community in early 19th-century New Orleans. In his lecture, Hennessey will highlight early performances at English-speaking theaters, including "Othello," which was the first of Shakespeare's works to grace a New Orleans stage, and "Antony and Cleopatra" and "Two Gentlemen of Verona," both of which had their first known North American productions in the Crescent City.
While actors strutted upon the stage at the Anglocentric St. Charles Theatre, Carnival krewes brought the Bard's work to life in elaborate floats, costumes, and theatrical processions down St. Charles Avenue. Hennessey will use THNOC's extensive Mardi Gras holdings to explore the influence of Shakespeare's works on Carnival celebrations. These ephemera, along with playbills and images from Shakespeare productions and organizations in New Orleans arts, will be on display in "Merry as the Day Is Long," THNOC's small-scale companion exhibition on Shakespearean elements in 19th- and 20th-century New Orleans, on view Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., May 3-June 4, at THNOC's Williams Research Center. Admission is free.
Both the lecture and the exhibition at THNOC are part of a series of events surrounding the nationally traveling exhibition "The First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare," on view at the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane May 9-31. Published in 1623, the famed First Folio features 36 works by Shakespeare. Considered one of the most valuable books in the world, the volume will be traveling to all 50 states and Washington, DC, in 2016, to mark the 400th anniversary of the playwright's death. The exhibition at Tulane will be the tour's only stop in Louisiana. THNOC is honored to join Tulane University and the New Orleans Public Library in welcoming the folio to the city. Visithttp:/// firstfolio.tulane.edu for more information about the exhibition and events hosted by Tulane and www.hnoc.org for details on related programming at THNOC.

New Steampunk Anthology, Cairo by Gaslight,

Will Debut at JPL on May 18

METAIRIE, LA - Brandon Black, a steampunk author who lives in New Orleans, will present his most recent anthology, Cairo by Gaslight, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

Black and other authors represented in the book will read and talk about their submissions.

In a Cairo that "never was and never will be," there are a thousand stories to tell:

    • As ornithopters flit and flutter about overhead, their shadows fall across the ancient, stone forms of the Sphinx and the Great Pyramids.
    • Mad professors wage secret wars by night with mechanical assassins, while societies, secret and ancient, struggle against one another with cunning and magic, with poison and cold, hard steel.
    • Sky smugglers, lovers, air pirates and spies seek rendezvous unseen and undisturbed, as jewel thieves and tomb robbers ply their dangerous trades.
    • Bounty hunters stalk their criminal prey while defiant rebels meet with black-market arms dealers to trade gold for the guns, powder and clockwork soldiers they need to continue their struggles.
    • The mercantile and warrior airships of the Great Powers float lazily overhead while their sea-going sisters traverse the Canal.
Brandon Black is a fantasy and science fiction author living in New Orleans. He is the founder and moderator of the New Orleans Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers' Circle at the Jefferson Parish Public Library. Black received a bachelor's degree in Military and Political Journalism from the University of New Orleans and went on to receive a master's degree of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Louisiana State University. His short fiction has been published in Dark Oak Press' Dreams of Steam III, Black Tome Books' New Orleans By Gaslight, and Seventh Star Press' A Chimerical World: Tales of the Seelie. His poem, "The Ballad of the Dashing Skywayman," appeared in Cowboy Press' Unbridled. Black is currently writing his first steampunk novel.

RIDE OF SILENCE 14 TH ANNUAL WORLDWIDE
    EVENT
New Orleans, LA ─ On Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will
begin in North America and continue to roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a
slow, silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public
roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to Share the Road with motorists, the motoring
public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves. The
Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets,
follow the rules of the road, and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no
registration fees. The ride, always held on the 3 rd Wednesday of May, during National Bike
Month , aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a
legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for, and honor, in
funeral procession style, the lives of those who have been killed or injured.
Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas in 2003 after endurance cyclist
Larry Schwartz was killed by a passing bus mirror on an empty road. Since its inception, the
ride now includes 372 listed locations worldwide. Our local Ride of Silence began in 2006.
Participants for this year's event should plan on meeting around 6:30 pm at the St.
Charles entrance to Audubon Park. A brief ceremony, remembering family and lovedones
    who
lost their lives while riding their bicycle, will be held prior to the start of the ride. The route is
approximately 12 miles long, passing through Audubon Park and continuing along the mighty
Mississippi on the levee bike path. The ride pace will be based on the slowest riders, but will not
exceed 12 mph. The ride ends where it began at the St. Charles entrance to Audubon Park.
Participants of all abilities are invited to join the procession. The ride requests black arm bands
be worn in memory of cyclists who have been killed and red armbands be worn to honor those
    who have been injured.

    '60s Broadway Musical Mega Hit
"How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying"
Comes to Rivertown Theaters' Main Stage

A Word of Caution:  See This Satire of Big Business & All It Holds Sacred Before Your Boss Does!

Co-artistic director Gary Rucker will direct seven-time Tony Awards winner "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" on the Main Stage at Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts

Big business means big laughs in the delightfully clever lampoon of life on the corporate ladder. A tune-filled comic gem that took Broadway by storm, boasts an exhilarating score by Frank Loesser including I Believe In You, Brotherhood of Man, and The Company Way. A satire of big business in the 1960's, How To Succeed follows the rise of J. Pierrepont Finch, who relies on a "How To" book to climb the corporate ladder from lowly window washer to high-powered executive. He tackles such familiar, but potent dangers as the aggressively compliant "company man", the office party, back-stabbing co-workers, caffeine addiction and, of course, true love. Power, ambition, greed... it's just another day at the office, Broadway-style! Winner of both the Tony and Pulitzer Prize for its status as a classic, not-to-be-missed musical treat.

Rivertown Theaters and Kajun Karno Kitchen will introduce pre-theater fare for hungry   theatergoers who want to arrive early for the show and enjoy cocktails, canapés and a music   combo live in the Courtyard prior to opening night curtain.  Kajun Karno Kitchen Chef Patrick   Darceywill serve a sampler plate of bacon wrapped shrimp, smoked boudin, and fried fish for $12 per order from 6:30pm-7:45pm.  Desserts and coffee will also be available for purchase     after the show.

"Opening night is always especially exciting and so many of our patrons tell us they would like to park early and be able to  relax and dine nearby before the show," said co-artistic director Kelly Fouchi. "We are introducing this in hopes that we will make their evening extra convenient and fun."

Ogden After Hours - Aurora Nealand
    May 19 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
    • An established bandleader, composer, performer and improviser, Aurora Nealand has become a prominent force in the New Orleans music scene since she first arrived in 2005. Combining the "formal education" - a music composition degree from Oberlin Conservatory and training at the Jacques Lecoq School of  Physical Theatre in Paris -  with the "informal"  experience of playing music in the streets and clubs of New Orleans and throughout the northern Hemisphere, Nealand has emerged as an innovative, sensitive and daring music creator and performer.
She is most recognized for her performance on saxophones, clarinet and vocals and has been at the forefront of the revival of New Orleans Traditional Jazz amongst the younger generation of the city's musicians. After playing and learning as a sideman in established New Orleans Bands for several years, (Panorama Jazz Band, VaVaVoom, The New Orleans Moonshiners), in 2010 she formed her own Traditional Jazz band "The Royal Roses". The Royal Roses released it's first album, "A Tribute to Sydney Bechet: Live at Preservation Hall" to national acclaim and Nealand was voted as one of Downbeat Magazines top ten rising stars for soprano saxophone in 2010.
Nealand grew up in a musical family in California listening to Preservation Hall Jazz Band recordings side by side with Stravinsky, Joan Baez and the Pixies. Later, during her time at Oberlin College/Conservatory she was exposed and fell in love with the recordings of Mingus, the soundscapes of Mort Subotnik and the performances of Laurie Anderson. With a strong interest in interdisciplinary work and sound for theatre and installation, she moved to Paris to study at the Ecole du Theatre Physical Jacques Lecoq. Upon returning to the states, she bicycled cross-country collecting audio interviews and stories in rural America to be used in a series of compositions about true "American Dreams". This bicycle trip landed her in New Orleans, which has acted as her home base since 2005. www.auroranealand.com

His father picked the guitar, "Carter Family-style," while his Uncle Alton lent a remarkable voice to the traditional Cajun songs and old-time country ballads. Bruce Daigrepont almost single-handedly has popularized Cajun music and Cajun dancing in cosmopolitan New Orleans.  For more information about the band, visit brucedaigrepont.com

August 11 - Julio and Cesar
Originally from Guatemala, Julio and Cesar Herrera have been in New Orleans for over 30 years.  They describe their music as constantly evolving, attributing this, in part, to their exposure from an early age to many cultures.  For more information about the band, visit julioandcesar.com.

    August 18 - Pfister Sisters
Holley Bendtsen, Yvette Voelker, Debbie Davis and Amasa Miller comprise one of the few groups that represent the New Orleans swing era, with their recreation of the Boswell Sisters arrangements, and the only act featuring vocal jazz harmony. They bring joy to your soul, harmony to your ears, and the best and biggest boogie-woogie to your feet. For more information about the band, visit pfistersisters.com.

August 25 - Mark Brooks and Friends
Mark Brooks is one of New Orleans' most talented, versatile, and sought after bassist. Mark has played and toured with an array of artists including Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Henry Butler, Charles and Aaron Neville's Ensembles, Lou Rawls, Fats Domino, Ellis Hall Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Harry Connick, Sr. Mark is known for his diversity with the different styles of music ranging from Rhythm & Blues, Contemporary Jazz, Traditional Jazz, Blues, and Gospel. For more information about the band, visit markabrooks.net.

                            About the band
Honey Island Swamp Band formed after Aaron Wilkinson (acoustic guitar, mandolin, vocals) and Chris Mulé (electric guitar, vocals) evacuated to San Francisco following Hurricane Katrina, and had a chance encounter with fellow New Orleans evacuees Sam Price (bass, vocals) and Garland Paul (drums, vocals). Not knowing when they might return to the Crescent City, they decided to put together a band. Honey Island Swamp Band's music has been described as "Bayou Americana" with timeless songs from Wilkinson and Mulé. The original sound is highlighted by Mulé's searing guitar and Wilkinson's sure-handed mandolin and four-part vocal harmonies, all anchored by the powerful groove of Price and Paul's Louisiana stomp rhythm section. The addition of Trevor Brooks (organ) in 2010 rounded out the band's sound, which draws from a variety of influences in the world of roots music.

    Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Love New Orleans & She'll Love You Back.
