National Newsletter - May 2016

It's that time of year.  Graduates at every academic level - kindergarten through the highest levels of post graduate education - are coming together to "commence" the next stage of their life.  Thanks to today's technology, we all get a peak into the messages delivered by well known celebrities, politicians, coaches and other leaders who feel the pressure to be memorable.  Their audience?  Boys and girls, men and women, all at the doorstep of a transition.

Do you remember your commencement speaker?  If you're like me, probably not.  I got more emotional about hearing the music - Pomp and Circumstance - than anything I heard from the revered guests.

We talk a lot about transition here at The Transition Network.  We created the Women in Transition Workshop which teaches us about the stages of transition.  We meet in Transition Peer Groups to learn from each other how to remain active and relevant.  At this point in our lives we are facing more transitions than at any other single time.  Is there a secret to getting through all of this?  Of course not.  But there is a recurring theme in how to face these changes, both good and not-so-good, and how to come through them in a way that makes us stronger and happier.

I don't know anyone who wasn't moved by the tragedy that struck Sheryl Sandberg a year ago.  Whether you agree with her philosophy of Lean In or not, here was a woman who, by almost anyone's standards, had everything - an amazing career, a beautiful family, a full and complete life.  And in a moment, without warning, her husband David was gone.  I can't fathom how one could recover from that.

In the year since, Sheryl, like many of you who experienced this kind of loss, put one foot in front of another.  Last week, she delivered the commencement speech at the University of California at Berkeley.  In a very personal way, she spoke about resilience.  Resilience is the subject of the next TTN Signature Program currently under development and which is on track to be debuted in the fall.  As a preview of what we will all learn together, I offer a video of Sheryl's commencement address.  Persevere through the ads to hear what she learned and what we look forward to learning more about together in the coming months.

Happy Spring!
TTN Telephone Peer Groups Connect National Members
~ Leslie Prager, M.A., C.M.P.

Serving as facilitator of the first-ever TTN Telephone-Based Peer Group, back in September 2007, which connects women from the east coast to the west coast (from LA to CT), continues to be a pleasure and a wonderful work-in-progress. The group continues to provide a positive and helpful atmosphere and it is truly a support system for women in transition and moving into, or in, the retirement phase of their lives.

The following article first appeared in the February 2008 TTN Newsletter, but is as relevant today as then. Since that time, I am delighted to note, that several additional Telephone-Based Peer Groups have been formed.

2016 TTN Strategic Plan Committee Update

On a recent Executive Director-Chapter Leader call, we provided updates on the progress of the work being done in our 2016 Strategic Planning Committees.  Here is a brief summary of those updates.

I.  Member Experience Committee. The committee was successful in recruiting new volunteers who have experience in program development.  This group is working on developing new ways to support our members in transition via Signature Programs and best practices for Transition Peer Groups.  They also have an exploratory subcommittee looking into the viability of a national TTN conference.

II.  Leadership Development Committee. This committee is reaching out to the members of all of our steering committees to determine a priority for providing leadership training. Our chapter leaders are the linchpin of TTN so it's imperative that we support them in ways that will ensure their success in providing an exceptional experience for our members.

III.  Development and Fundraising Committee. This committee is researching ways to ensure the continued financial viability of TTN.  These include grants and corporate sponsorship.

If you're interested in volunteering to help any of these committees with their important work, please contact me at [email protected].

Elders Climate Action - Congressional Candidates Climate Project

We are pleased to share the work of one of our partners in the Encore Network - Conscious Elders Network (CEN) - which
is an educational, non-profit organization fostering a budding movement of vital elders, dedicated to growing in consciousness while actively addressing the demanding challenges facing our country.

CEN recently launched a project called Congressional Candidates Climate Project.  They hope to reach candidates in as many Congressional Districts as possible to learn their stands on the issue of climate change.

If this is an important issue for you, check out their website for more information on the project and how you can help.
