Brand New Course, 100 years in the making

As you know, massage therapists can use exercises to prolong and enhance the effects of a massage, and personal trainers create training programs that are varied and progressive and geared toward improving clients' health and wellness.

We only get a little time to try exercise techniques and tools in massage school, and personal trainers need to continually deliver safe, effective, fun and interesting workouts.

Therefore, we are very excited to announce this brand new course that is uniquely designed for (and within the scope of practice of) both the licensed massage therapist and the personal trainer.

The course can be used for CEUs for both L.M.T’s and Personal Trainers, and not only adds to your toolbox for use with clients but could really help your own body stay tuned and recover from those long days of working to help others.

We are physical culturists here at Swedish Institute. Originally called “The Swedish Gymnastics Institute,” our structured physical education system was based on the Swedish (Ling) and German (Jahn) Methods and combined military, medical and aesthetic exercises that had Restorative and Pedagogical components. Indian Clubs, Wands, Dumbbells and Medicine Balls were the go-to tools, or "Four Horsemen” during the golden age of American Physical Education and Physical Culture in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Wands and Indian Clubs were used extensively for restorative exercises and recovery. They are a powerful tool for enhancing treatments by promoting mobility, stamina, and coordination (inter and intramuscular), and can help your clients with their physical needs and goals.

This course connects us to the past and brings those effective methods forward into the present.

You will learn how crossing the midline, stimulating the brainstem, and complex rhythmic movement activities do more than improve inter and intramuscular coordination, but may also improve cognition and higher mental functions. Pre- and Post-Rehab applications of club and wand drills will be presented, along with teaching and correcting methods from a motor learning perspective. These sequences can be used with clients for warm up and cool down, as well as part of a restorative exercise program or on “light days.” Structured drills with these tools build coordination, skill, timing, mobility, stamina and resilience.
