Religious Education Newsletter

May 16, 2016

Dear Catechetical Colleagues,

Our "Essential Concept" this week is the Body of Christ. As we journey from Pentecost into Ordinary Time, it offers us a moment to pause and consider how we as members of the Church use our hands and bodies to share the works of mercy. We are especially excited that on June 1st, Dr. Joe Paprocki will be sharing ideas on how we can live out these works more fully through our faith formation programs.

As we continue with our Jubilee Year of Mercy, we would like to let you know about a new documentary, The Original Image of Divine Mercy. This video featuring a variety of Catholic speakers will be shown at Sacred Heart Parish in conjunction with the celebration of their feast day on June 3rd. See the Year of Mercy section below for specific details.

As summer approaches, we would like to remind you about our multiple
CYO Camping opportunities. We hope you are encouraging your students to participate in this rich faith and fun experience !

In Christ,

Anne Frederick, Ed.D.

Pope Francis Proclaims the Church is the Living Body of Christ and Calls for Christian Unity
(written article) Too often, even Catholics do not understand that to belong to Jesus the Head means to belong to His Body, the Church. That belonging is meant to be a lived, relational, transforming reality. The teaching of this pope is beautiful and profoundly important.

Resources from the LMC on Models of the Catholic Church-Body of Christ

Christ's Mission Through the Church: A Primary Source Reader (Ave Maria Press) Aims to help you learn more about the Church and how you can share in Christ's mission as a unique and valued member of the Body of Christ. Within this reader you will find writings from: Saint Paul the Apostle Pope Benedict XVI / Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger Julian of Norwich The Second Vatican Council T. S. Eliot Dorothy Day Meister Eckhart Kurt Vonnegut Saint Ignatius of Antioch Simone Weil Saint Thomas Aquinas G. K. Chesterton Saint Peter Damian Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Blessed John Henry Newman.

What You Do Best: In the Body of Christ (Bruce Bugbee) Helps you identify your God-given passion, spiritual gifts, and personal style. And he shows how together they point to your unique role and purpose in the body of Christ. Drawing from biblical principles, What You Do Best provides proven tools and a conversational approach that will guide you to a greater fulfillment of God's will for your life.

Being the Body of Christ: What the People of the Passion Teach us about Jesus Today (Marci Alborghetti) One is his mother. Another is a friend. Still another is a stranger. They are among the seven people who witness Jesus' death on the cross. Drawing from Scripture and tradition, Marci Alborghetti creates tender, profoundly personal depictions of each encounter; we feel Mary's anguish as she holds her son's cold, tattered body and recalls rocking her newborn; we stand with John at the foot of the cross, somewhere between hope and despair. We feel the Centurion's bewilderment, Magdalene's grief, and Nicodemus' wrenching regret. "These are the people who can become our guides as we seek to commit ourselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually to Jesus and his teaching," says Alborghetti. Each chapter offers questions and topics for personal reflection or group discussion, making this an inspiring and cherished companion for all who seek deeper participation in the body of Christ.

Priest, Prophet, King (DVD, Word On Fire) The better we understand Jesus, the better we understand ourselves. But who was Jesus, this itinerant preacher whom many called the Messiah? In Priest, Prophet, King, you'll discover Jesus as the Anointed One-the ultimate priest, prophet, and king foreshadowed throughout the Hebrew Scriptures. Using biblical insights and engaging stories, Father Barron affirms that we see Jesus most clearly through the lens of the Old Testament. This deeply biblical program, filmed in high-definition video, features an accompanying study guide by notable Catholic writer and apologist, Carl Olson, written under Fr. Barron's direction.

Divine Mercy & The Divine Comedy
During this Year of Mercy (December 8, 2015-November 20, 2016) Pope Francis has asked us to use Dante's Divine Comedy as a "spiritual guide." Knowing how intimidating this project sounds, the Department of Evangelization and Catechesis of the Diocese of Rochester has put together a reading plan along with a group of theologians, literary scholars, and other lovers of Dante's work to help us all mine the riches from one whom Pope Benedict XV called "the most eloquent singer of the Christian idea."
