Richmond City Teams Breaking New Ground with Pilot Sustainability Project
Coach Marshall and Franklin Military Team
In 2015, VirginiaFIRST launched a pilot initiative to bring sustainable robotics programs to Richmond City Public Schools'. Through the generosity of the Brookfield Foundation, Capital One Foundation, and Americorps VISTA program; consultation support from the Association of Science-Technology, and information from participant focus group sessions, VirginiaFIRST laid the foundation for the Sustainability through Youth Leadership and Advocacy pilot (STYLAA). Two existing FIRST teams were selected to participate: Franklin Military Academy (FTC) and Thomas Jefferson High School (FRC).
STYLAA sessions consisted of weekly engagement lessons, adapted from Stanford University's Youth Engaged in Leadership and Learning (YELL) handbook. Each week robotics students from each school were presented with a different leadership topic. Through experiential learning exercises, students were then challenged to apply the soft skills learned during each session with the integrated hard skills provided through FIRST's program support.
VirginiaFIRST's STYLAA efforts proved to be tremendously successful. Eight months and several leadership sessions later, our program participation number has grown 100%. Participants are self-advocating in ways they have never done before. It is the first time ever that these students are connecting with local sponsors, forming partnerships with local HBCUs, and obtaining in-kind donations from local businesses. More than fifty partnership and sponsorship "asks" were initiated this school year. Additionally, teams have presented funding pitches to several local foundations and grant organizations totaling over $100,000.
Leadership and self-advocacy skills are creating new opportunities for STYLAA participants. VirginiaFIRST is committed to continue helping under-resourced teams cultivate these essential skills and is actively working to enhance our program in order to meet the needs of under-resourced robotics students in Richmond and throughout Virginia, DC and Maryland.
