Christmas Tree Recycling - Looking to recycle your Christmas Tree? Westland provides Christmas Tree Recycling at the City's Recycling Center located at the rear of the DPS building located at 37137 Marquette. Trees may be dropped off Monday- Saturday, 9am - 5pm (closed on Sundays). The dates for drop-off are January 5 through January 17.  Trees should be free of lighting, tinsel and other decorations. All trees received will be chipped and will be recycled for use at the Westland Community Garden and other locations.

 

Advanced Engineering Job Fair - Mayor William R. Wild's "Westland Works" Team is helping to put residents to work with an upcoming job fair for employment opportunities with Advanced Engineering. The job fair will be held on Saturday, January 10 at the Westland City Hall Grande Ballroom, 9 am - 12 pm. City Hall is located at 36300 Warren Rd. in Westland. Advanced Engineering specializes in stamping and is located in Canton. Open positions include a variety of different opportunities, and the company is looking to hire 30 individuals immediately. Applicants must have attained a GED or graduated high school, be able to pass a drug test, and applicants should bring a resume and valid driver's license. Interested individuals will be able to fill out an application at the event and possibly be interviewed that day. 

 

Grand Opening of Norwayne Boxing Gym - Don't miss out on this great event of the Grand Opening of the Norwayne Boxing Gym on Saturday. January 10 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., located inside the Jefferson Barns Recreation Center at 32150 Dorsey Street.  Doors will open at noon with boxing exhibitions starting at 1:00 p.m. and the ribbon cutting ceremony beginning at 2:00 p.m. The boxing gym is founded by undeafeated professional boxer Jeff Styers and former top contender Erskine Wade will offer daily training sessions.  The Grand Opening will include a special guest appearance by Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns who is a former five-time World Champion.  Also making an appearance is Current Light Middleweight Champion Cornelius "K9" Bundrage and former Word Champions Jimmy Paul and Hilmer Kenty.   

 

Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location. 

 

-The Westland Tax Increment Finance Authority will meet on Tuesday, January 13 at 9:00 a.m. in Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.

 

"Mingle with the Mayor" - "Mingle with the Mayor" is a new series launched by Mayor William R. Wild to allow him further connect with residents. The Mayor will be hosting "Coffee Hour with the Mayor" on Tuesday, January 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in the gallery at City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Road.  Residents will have an opportunity to enjoy coffee and discuss matters of importance to them.

 

Dream Interpretation - Join Arts Therapist, Nancy Paton, for "The Magical, Marvelous World of Dreams" as she discusses how dreams helped guide and inspire her over a period of 25 years at the William P. Faust Westland Public Library on Thursday, January 15 at 7:00 p.m. The presentation will include tips and information on how to interpret dreams and metaphors that speak to us daily. Dream study is a fascinating field that will provide deep insights into all areas of your life.  Nancy Paton, M.Ed., is an arts therapist, exhibit curator, and dream consultant with 24 years' experience studying and teaching dream interpretation at local colleges, churches and arts venues.  The Library is located at 6123 Central City Parkway.

 

Dinner and a Movie at the Library - The William P. Faust Westland Public Library, located at 6123 Central City Parkway, will be holding its Friday Night Movie on Friday, January 16 at 6:00 p.m.  This week the event will also include dinner provided by "Loaf and a Pound," a local deli in Westland. They will be showing "Get on Up." (Rated PG-13)  Purchase of dinner includes the sandwich, chips, soft drink, and a small dessert. A dinner ticket is $6 and must be purchased by Thursday, January 15th. Moviegoers do not need to have dinner to watch the movie, though. Doors for movie-only attendees will open at 6:45 p.m. Snacks and refreshments are provided before the movie on a donation basis.  Each week also features a trivia contest with small prizes handed out after the movie.

 

 

Friday Night Glow Skate - The Mike Modano Ice Arena has re-opened for the season and Friday Night Glow Skate is back.  Glow skate will run every Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:20 p.m. and will cost $4 for kids and $5 for adults for residents.  The cost is 50 cents more for non-resident.  Glow in the dark accessories will be available for purchase in the pro shop.  The Ice Arena is located at 6210 Wildwood.

 

Save the Date: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is Monday, January 19, and we invite you to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King in the Grande Ballroom at the Westland City Hall.  Doors will open at 9 a.m. and the event will begin at 10 a.m. This year's ceremony will feature appearances by local dignitaries, musical selections, local talent, prayers lead by community church leaders and  Dr. Curtis Ivery, Chancellor of Wayne County Community College, as the keynote speaker. City Hall is located at 36300 Warren Rd. We hope you can join us for this special celebration.
