Speak Up for Research Fundraising Gala

Limited tickets are still available for NWABR's Speak Up for Research Gala being held on June 9, 2016.
You will join the leaders in biomedical research and research compliance in the Northwest for an evening of networking,
live music
and scrumptious food as we honor the outstanding progress and contributors to biomedical research and its ethical conduct.
Dr. Chuck Murray and the Oregon Health and Sciences University will be recognized for their amazing contributions to biomedical research and in acknowledgement of their dream of future generations not being by plagued by heart disease and cancer.
Guests will be welcomed to the event by a well known Seattle Jazz Combo. Later in the evening the immunological cover band, ROXP3, will get us singing along to some of our favorite tunes with a distinct biomedical theme.
The dessert dash will be to die for. One of last year's attendees said "the dessert dash capped off the best fundraising event I have been to in my life." Local bakeries and our own biomedical peers will be providing desserts to entice us on the night.

Camp BioMed Registration Now!
Space is filling up for NWABR's Third Annual Camp BIOmed. Camp is designed for those entering grades 9-12 and features three unique camp experiences--Cancer Laboratory/DIY Biology - the Molecular Biology of Cancer, Next Gen Science - Origami of Life & Bioinformatics, and CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) - Forensics and Molecular Biology-- over 6 weeks each beginning July 11th. Camp is centrally located on the beautiful campus of Seattle Pacific University.

Sad News
This newsletter is normally compiled by Jen Wroblewski, NWABR's amazing Community Engagement Manager. Last Monday (May 23) Jen's husband Scott suddenly and totally unexpectedly passed away.
Scott and Jen have 3 young children and he was a treasured friend and colleague to many people in the accounting, church, school and non-profit communities. He was well loved for his wit, sincerity, intelligence, kindness and fun.
We are so deeply saddened by Scott's passing.
Scott's family has established a Caringbridge site, when you can learn about Scott's life, and you can also see some suggestions for making donations in recognition of Scott.
People have also been asking where to send condolence cards. You can send them to the "Wroblewski Family" c/o NWABR, 2633 Eastlake Ave E., Suite 302, Seattle WA 98102.
We'll see that they get to Jen.

Middle and High School students inspire us about the future (and often) to tears
The situation is like this - I am sitting quietly at my desk doing leadership and management stuff for NWABR, and I hear Dr. Alaina Garland crying. Being moved to tears is one of the common things that judges tell us about the essays, posters and videos submitted this year for the Middle School Science competition. The students have to report on how biomedical research has impacted their lives - and do they ever do it. They tell stories of becoming sick, being diagnosed and the scientific development of the treatments that they, a family member, or a family pet have experienced.
Nearly 600 entries were received. The winning entrants will receive their prizes on June 6, 2016, one day before Alaina is due to complete her own developmental biology program and deliver a new scientist to the world. You can see some of the winning entries here.
We want to thank the Knossos Foundation, IDRI and all of our judges who labored to give feedback to students as part of this program.
But wait ... There is more! On May 16, 380 super smart high school students descended on the Shoreline Community College for this year's Bio Expo competition. Students worked with a mentor to complete a science project and to present their findings in 13 different categories ranging from Drama and Dance to Lab Research. The NWABR website will be updated to report the winning entries in the next few days - Bio Expo Site.
We need to sincerely thank the mentors, judges, the Shoreline Community College, Zymogenetics, our keynote speaker Dr. Rupesh Amin from Juno Therapeutics, and the Biddle Consulting Group for their support of this program.

UW, IEH R&D Seek Community Members for Research Oversight Committees
IEH Research and Development seeks public members to serve on their newly formed IACUC Committee. Responsibilities would include biannual review of animal care and use protocols specifically at their farm location in Redmond, as well as one or two additional meetings per year. Contact

The University of Washington is seeking additional public members to serve on the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). The responsibilities include the scientific and biosafety review of research protocols involving recombinant DNA and other biohazardous agents. Members are also expected to attend and participate in monthly IBC meetings. The meetings take place on the third Wednesday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Parking reimbursement is provided.
