Christian Leaders              Academic Achievers           Responsible Citizens
Dear St. John the Baptist Families,

It's graduation week !  A BIG Congratulations and a fond farewell to our 8th grade class of 2016 who will celebrate tomorrow with their Dinner Dance and will graduate this Friday evening at 7:30pm.  These students are outstanding examples of Christian Leadership, Academic Achievement and Responsible Citizenship. We wish them well and will miss each one of them.

When our 8th graders graduate this Friday, some of their families will be leaving our school as well. We wish to say a warm goodbye to those parents who have been an important part of our school community. They have gifted us with their time and talents during their years at St. John the Baptist School and their presence will be missed.

Please join me in sending your thoughts and prayers to the following families:
To the Barba, Bautista, Hall, Hardin, Lynch, Orozco, Ruiz,  Samayoa, Shrestha, Smith, Spiller, Szerlip, Williams, Woodson and Zaragoza families.

Did You Know?  That we need parents/guardians to join the School Board and PTG next year?  To date we have only received a few interested in helping with the PTG and NO volunteers for the School Board:(  Please contact Merci Richardson if you are interested in being a PTG volunteer:  [email protected] and Dina Trombettas if you are interested in the School Board:  [email protected]

Request for Prayers:  We pray especially this week for our School Secretary and 3rd Grade Teaching Assistant Mrs. Brown who is in the hospital undergoing screening for her heart.  We certainly miss her, wish her a speedy recovery and ask that you keep her close in prayer.  We also pray for those who are battling illness, those who are hungry and homeless, those who are unemployed and for those who are  suffering loss.

Blessings for a Wonderful Week!

2016-2017- A Snapshot of the School Year to Come
As we close out the 2015-2016 school year, we are working as a faculty and staff to plan for the 2016-2017 school year that will soon be upon us.  Here's a snapshot of what's to come in the new year.

STANDARDS BASED REPORT CARDS GRADES K-5
Assessment, grading, and record keeping are among the most important tasks a classroom teacher performs. These processes help teachers determine what and how well students have learned and serve as a vehicle for providing feedback about student learning to parents and students. A Standards-Based System, or SBS, calls for a clear identification of what students should know and be able to do. Increased clarity in terms of student learning goals quite naturally calls for increased accuracy in terms of assessment, grading and reporting.

Standards-Based Grading focuses on measuring students' proficiency on a specific set of outcomes. These outcomes are shared with students and parents at the outset of the course, along with Proficiency Scales, often referred to as standards-based rubrics, which explain the essential outcomes in detail. A student's progress toward proficiency is tracked by performance on learning tasks that align to the outcome, which encourages student ownership of the learning and allows the teacher to provide accurate feedback to the student and parents. The goal of a standards-based approach is to clearly communicate to students and parents what is expected of the students and how to help them be successful in their educational journey.

Standards based teaching has been implemented over the past two years in our classrooms and our report cards for grades K-5 will be a match beginning fall 2016!  Drafts of all K-5 report cards can be found in School Speak and your child's teacher will be giving an overview at Back to School Night and your child's School Speak grading categories will also be revised in his/her grade portfolio.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE - 5 DAYS PER WEEK
Mrs. Bains will be working with our 6-8 Science students  5 days per week. As an emphasis is placed on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) programming for Science, Mrs. Bains will be working with the students to expand all grade level Science instruction by incorporating Next Generation Science Standards and paired labs which are aligned to California State Standards.

ART PROGRAM IMPLEMENTED GRADES K-8
Mrs. Suarez will be both our Art and Spanish teacher next  year and will be with us 5 days per week.   All K-5 classrooms will have Art added to their curriculum in the fall with the use of the "Art in Action" program.  Students in grades 6-8 will have the option of either taking Spanish or Art as an elective in the fall and course descriptions for these grade 6-8 classes will be sent out to families in the next week with a request to make a selection that will best suit student interest and skillset.
