Dear Members, Clients and Friends,

A wonderful massage from a skilled therapist leaves you feeling pampered, supple, and relaxed. No wonder NWWF have named our sessions The Treat (30 min), The Indulgence (60 min) and The Ultimate (90 min). Massage can certainly feel like a delightful luxury, but more and more clinical research demonstrates that massage is a practical tool in maintaining consistent wellness. As we approach the cold and flu season consider the benefits to your immunity that massage can offer.

In April 2013, Dr. Mark Rapoport and his partners presented the results of his study on the effects of Swedish massage on Immunity and Endocrine Function in Normal Clients. Testing blood and saliva before and at gauged increments after Swedish massage, the results were notable. One session alone indicated improvement in the biomarkers for immune function as well as a decrease in vasopressin and cortisol levels (related to stress levels). In 2004 over 300 studies had been conducted relating to stress and immune function. A meta-analysis of these studies indicated there is a serious long-term effect on immunity with chronic stress.

Wellness is a holistic composition of self-care and management of external influences. Eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, adequate sleep, water and laughter all help boost your immunity while decreasing stress. Consider regular massage as another element of your wellness program. NW Women's Fitness has you covered with our competitive massage pricing and skilled therapists. We offer a Monthly Massage Membership Program which deducts $10 off every massage you receive with a minimum commitment of one massage a month and no limit to additional massages at this special pricing. Invest in your health, your joy and your long-term immunity and join our Massage Membership Program. We have openings every day of the week to serve you and your health!

Your Northwest Women's Fitness Team

Client of the Month
aka Mr. September
Gene Clark

A year ago, I couldn't have imagined this journey.

I was heavy and sinking away from an active life, a person in denial of what was there for all to see.

In October of last year, my wife thought I'd benefit from the TRX team training she was enjoying at Northwest Women's Fitness and asked me to give it a try. A nagging sense I needed a change led me to try something I never considered before: a group exercise class. Oh! Was I fooling myself! I was so out of shape that after 2 sessions I had to withdraw with a strained abdomen. How embarrassing! It didn't even seem that difficult, but I couldn't do it. So time passed and I continued to gain weight and shame at how I was looking and feeling.

My wife didn't give up, though. A Christmas gift from her of personal training with NWWF was greatly appreciated, but set aside as I told myself I'd use it after the post-New Year resolution rush. You know, when it would be more convenient. The stories we tell ourselves...

The turning point was at a doctor's appointment in mid-January of this year. After gaining an additional bit of weight between October and then, he asked me," So, you just eat what you want?" That stung in a surprising way. Two weeks later I started personal training with Alta and haven't looked back.

Seven months later, here I am. Alta devised a fitness program that clicked. We met twice a week for an intense and evolving half-hour workout that I began to supplement with 20 minutes of cardio on the elliptical trainer before and after each workout. We set up a daily nutrition audit at MyPlate where I track everything I eat.  She encouraged me to do anything else that would keep me moving - join a gym for more cardio and strength (I did), ride my bike (I did), jump rope (I did, some), and Tabata (I'll do more, I promise). I even recently rejoined that Wednesday TRX class that I couldn't hack before! I dedicated myself to feeling better about my health, my fitness, and releasing myself from the growing layers of shame that had been increasingly weighing me down. To date I've lost more than 40 pounds, over 10% body fat, and almost 9 inches around my waist. Not only that, I built strength and stamina, and gained a much improved outlook on life.

Thank you Northwest Women's Fitness and especially you, Alta. I know I did the work, but you helped me discover how to flip the change switch.
