Vinegar Girl

A new slant on an old story by one of my favorite contemporary writers. Kate Battista is horrified when her scientist father asks her to marry the Russian he works with to provide the young man with American citizenship. Vinegar Girl is part of a series of adaptations by notable authors of WiIliam Shakespeare's plays. Ms.
Tyler  has used The Taming of the Shrew to provide a foundation for a story brimming with perceptive observations about the complex and difficult nature of family relationships in the 21st century.

What if We're Wrong
But What If We're Wrong?: Thinking about the Present as If It Were the Past

Klosterman

Are there fundamental laws of the universe that will have been replaced by new scientific knowledge in 100 years? And this democracy thing of ours. Is it just remotely possible it's not all it's cracked up to be? Charles Klosterman asks a lot of questions that seem pretty out there until you realize how wrong we often are and have been about almost everything. But What If We're Wrong is a perfect blend of entertainment and enlightenment from a wildly talented writer who may or may not be remembered in some distant future.

by Annie Proulx

This novel rightfully belongs to a select group that are worthy of being regarded as examples of epic American literature. The centuries-spanning story of a single family, working in various aspects of the timber industry, is Ms. Proulx's best book since The Shipping News.
Reading it is a little like taking a ride down a raging river in the wilderness, but the author's abiding concern for the sanctity of nature is evident on every page. Don't let its length deter you, this is a literary journey well worth taking.

Grunt

Grunt tackles the science behind some of a soldier's most challenging adversaries panic, exhaustion, heat, noise and introduces us to the scientists who seek to conquer them.  Take a tour of duty with Mary Roach, and you'll never see our nation's defenders in the same way again.

From the bestselling master espionage writer, hailed by Vince Flynn as the best in the business, comes a riveting novel about the French Resistance in Nazi-occupied Paris.
Alan Furst's A Hero of France is at once one of the finest novels written about the French Resistance and the most gripping novel yet by the living master of the spy thriller.
The Girls

In Emma Cline's electric debut novel we are exposed not only to the free-wheeling, free love feel of the Sixties but also to the seductive yet dangerous lure of counterculture. Fast-paced and relevant, this is a compelling coming of age novel that explores the relationship between girls and the women they idolize. I couldn't put it down!

Homegoing is a stunning debut novel tracing 300 years of history told through moments in the lives of the descendants of two half-sisters whose parallel lives follow very different paths. Their stories begin in the 1700s and end with the Great Migration in the 1970s, each generation showing the progress or lack thereof in the struggle for freedom and equality. So relevant today! Yaa Gyasi is a young writer to keep an eye on. Her talent for writing a novel so epic in scope with such economy is amazing!

The Square Root of Summer by Harriet Reuter Hapgood

Gottie H. Oppenheimer is losing time. Literally. When the fabric of the universe around her seaside town begins to fray, she's hurtled through wormholes to her past:
To last summer, when her grandfather Grey died. To the afternoon she fell in love with Jason, who wouldn't even hold her hand at the funeral. To the day her best friend Thomas moved away and left her behind with a scar on her hand and a black hole in her memory.
Although Grey is still gone, Jason and Thomas are back, and Gottie's past, present, and future are about to collide and someone's heart is about to be broken.

In this magical companion to the National Book Award nominee A Tangle of Knots, it's summertime and everyone is heading off to camp. For Talented kids, the place to be is Camp Atropos, where they can sing songs by the campfire, practice for the Talent show, and take some nice long dips in the lake. But what the kids don't know is that they've been gathered for a reason--one that the camp's director wants to keep hidden at all costs.
Meet Douglas, a dog with a big problem: he needs eyeglasses but doesn't know it, and his bad eyesight tends to land him in some pretty hairy situations.
Both kids and parents will laugh out loud-and may even recognize themselves!-while reading this utterly irresistible, hilarious picture book.

Each month Northshire Bookstore's award-winning booksellers will select the perfect book and send it to your friend, loved one or yourself!

Each book will arrive beautifully wrapped with a gift card.

This year is our 40th anniversary in Manchester Center, VT. We are planning to celebrate in grand style the weekend of September 10th, with a big sale, numerous events, door prizes and other fun things, to express our heartfelt thanks for all of your support over the decades. I am very grateful to announce that Richard Russo has generously agreed to be our headliner on the evening of the 10th. Not only is he one of the most acclaimed authors of our time, but he has been a stalwart champion of independent bookstores over the years. In his acceptance speech for the 2016 Indie Champion Award, Russo had this to say:

"When we press books upon one another - authors on their publishers, publishers on booksellers, booksellers on readers - we are doing what we've always done and always for the same reason. You'll like this, we tell each other. This is worth your while. This will cheer you up. This will break your heart. This will help you understand. Here, right here, is your new best friend, this book."

That is why we have been in the book business for forty years, over two generations.

Thanks for your support,
Chris Morrow
