This Week at St. Mark's         June 2, 2016
Worship
In the Baptismal Covenant, we are asked, "Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?" and we respond, "I will, with God's help."
The Bishop is Coming - Bishop Jeff Lee  will be conducting his official visitation with St. Mark's and with St. Matthew's on Saturday, June 11th in a combined lakefront worship service at 3:30 p.m.  This service will take place at the Grosse Pointe Lighthouse Park (on the lawn on the east side of the Harley Clark Mansion) --- if the weather is inclement, we will worship at St. Mark's.  Worship will be followed by a fabulous, but simple, picnic supper. If you would like to contribute food for the picnic, please e-mail [email protected] to find out what we still need.

Summer Schedule Launches June 19 - St. Mark's will operate on a "Summer Schedule" from Sunday, June 19 through Sunday, September 4, 2016:
  • 8:00 AM Traditional Worship with Eucharist in the Lady Chapel at St. Mark's
  • 9:30 AM Contemporary Worship with Eucharist at the Lakefrontclick here for map); in the event of rain, we worship at the church
There is no formal Sunday School from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, children of all ages are welcome and encouraged to worship. Worship booklets with activities for young children (readers and pre-readers) are available at the church and at the lakefront. Ask an usher if you need help locating a copy.

Summer Snacks - While coffee hour will continue to take place after the 8 a.m. service on Sundays throughout the summer and worshipers are encouraged to bring snacks (cookies, fruit, etc.) to share, we make a change for the 9:30 a.m. service. Afterwards, we enjoy lemonade and cookies at the lakefront (or, on rainy days, at the church). Rather than use the alphabet-method for signup, we have found it easier to just have one or two individuals or families sign up for a Sunday using the online sign-up list here or sign up in the Parlor on Sunday mornings between now and June 19.
This Sunday's Lay Ministers- Thank you to these parishioners for sharing their time and talent with the congregation this week. If you would like to be involved, contact Pastor Debra at [email protected]

Formation
Lifelong Christian faith formation is important for lifelong growth in the knowledge, service and love of God as followers of Christ. Regardless of where you are on your spiritual journey, no matter what season of life you are in, you are invited to enter into a prayerful life of continuous learning. Following are some upcoming opportunities for your journey in faith.
Now that Sunday School Has Ended. . . .
While Sunday School has come to an end until the fall, children's formation has not.  Worship is the primary place where formation happens as our children engage with prayer, song, communion, and fellowship by watching and participating as full members of the church (by virtue of their baptism) alongside others in the community of faith.  To help your child/ren stay engaged, St. Mark's has subscribed to Worship Bulletins for the summer weeks.  There are two versions - one for readers and one for pre-readers. You will find copies of each on the table at the back of the sanctuary. There are pencils in the pews (along with purple sheets of paper for those who need more room to be creative)! When we move to the lakefront for worship (June 19th), these children's bulletins will come with us to be enjoyed throughout the summer!

Going Where the Youth Are: Being Church
The Church is wherever God's people are gathered and for our youth that is often not at St. Mark's - the building - because they are involved in so many extra-curricular activities. Imagine the positive message we might share with our young people by Being Church where they are - at the ice rink, on the baseball diamond, at the debate club, at their concert. Let's show up and cheer for our young people. Let's Be Church Where the Youth Are! Take pictures, congratulate often, and remind our young people that they too are Being the Church wherever they are!
If you have events you would like included for your young person or if your child will be at camp and you'd like them added to the prayer list while they are away, please email Pastor Debra,   [email protected].

Social Justice & Outreach Opportunities

St. Mark's continues its commitment to our community through its many social justice and outreach activities. Following are ways in which you can get involved with the St. Mark's community in helping to create a better world.

Producemobile-Tuesday, June 14-
On the 2nd Tuesday of each month, Interfaith Action of Evanston tea ms up with the Greater Chicago Food Depository to bring free, fresh produce to our neighbors in need. The distribution takes place from 9:30-11:30 at the Robert Crown Center. Volunteers are needed from 8:30 a.m.-11:45 a.m. If you are able to help on June 14, please send an e-mail to Pastor Debra, [email protected] or sign-up online. Thank you to St. Mark's May Volunteers: Marion Drew, Bruce Gaede, Anna Holladay, Andrea Nowack, Pastor Debra and Chris Schultze.

Midweek Lunch: Come and join us! There are two weekly opportunities to serve our neighbors who struggle with hunger and homelessness. Every Tuesday from 6:00-6:30 pm, lunches are packed in the kitchen here at St. Mark's, and every Wednesday lunch is served at 11 a.m. On Wednesday, volunteers are asked to arrive by 10:00 a.m. and stay until 12:30 p.m.

Lunch packing and serving is a great way to get to know members of your church family and meet others from St. Matthew's, our partner in this ministry. Please join us as we joyfully build a deeper sense of community both within our church and more broadly in Evanston. You can make this commitment to fit your schedule: weekly, monthly, or every once in a while! Do you have summers off from school or work? Start thinking about ways you can plug in to this ongoing program. To sign-up, please click these links:

A Lion Hunt to Create Fellowship Across the Miles

Each summer, St. Mark's parishioners and staff members fan out across the country (sometimes across the globe) as travel plans take them outside of Evanston.  For the past couple of summers, we've stayed connected through sharing of church bulletins and through photos of time spent with Flat Jesus.

This year, St. Mark's invites you to go on a Lion Hunt!  The lion is our mascot and so we invite you, wherever you are (even if you don't leave Evanston) to keep your eyes open for lions - stuffed, real, in a painting, in the pages of a book - and take a picture (preferably with you in it). Then, send it to Natalie at the church office ( [email protected]) OR better yet, post it to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtags #StMarkEvanston and #LionHunt. We can't wait to see all the places you've found a lion to remind you of St. Mark's!

Wear Orange for Gun Violence Awareness, Support National Gun Violence Awareness Day TODAY
Gather with Mayor Tisdahl and others in Fountain Square in downtown Evanston from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. this evening to show your support for National Gun Violence Awareness Day.  Wear Orange!

In 2013, teens on the southside of Chicago started to wear orange to honor a friend shot and killed in a park near their school. Three years later, what started in their high school has become
a national movement.  Join Bishop Lee and his colleagues in   Bishops United Against Gun Violence today  and #WearOrange to show your support for a country free of Gun Violence.  Want to do more? Here are some ways to spread the word:
  • Take pictures of yourself, friends, family wearing orange
  • Post those pictures on social media using TWO hashtags: #WearOrange and #Episcopal.
Some example posts and tweets:
  • The noise around gun violence is loud. Orange is louder. Join us and #WearOrange today.
  •  What was started by teens in Chicago has turned into a national movement. How will you #WearOrange today? Watch the video here.

Antiracism Training in July-  Please join Pastor Debra at the next Understanding & Analyzing Systemic Racism training offered by the Diocesan Antiracism Commission and partner organization Chicago ROAR will be July 28-30 at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in Hyde Park.  Learn more and register.
Other Announcements
Social Media and St. Mark's-  If you have your mobile device it would be good if you put it on silent when in worship. But if anything in Sunday's service-a prayer, reading, hymn or the sermon-moves you, please feel free to tweet it or post it to Facebook #StMarkEvanston.  While you're at it, "check-in" with us on Foursquare!

St. Mark's website has up-to-date information on all that's new at St. Mark's - including a current calendar of events - check it out. Also, find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter @StMarkEvanston!
In The Community

God calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Loving finds all of its meaning in relationship. The following are opportunities to be in relationship with one another and with the community of Evanston.

Meals at Home:  Volunteers needed for meal delivery
Meals at Home delivers meals to home bound residents of the North Shore. Meals are provided from local hospitals and restaurants Monday through Saturday and delivered throughout Chicago's North Shore. Volunteers deliver meals at least once a month between 11 am and 1:30 pm. Drivers must be at least 21 years old with a valid license and vehicle insurance, but all ages are welcome. Visit us online at mealsathome.org , call us at 847-332-2678, or email [email protected] to get involved!
Tai Chi Chuan  is an ancient Chinese martial art that promotes well-being by circulating the chi of the body through a series of slow, relaxing movements.  The Human Process teaches the Yangstyle short form each Saturday morning at St. Mark's.  Practicing Tai Chi helps replenish energy reserves, improves balance, loosens tight muscles and brings more flexibility to joints and ligaments.  It is a cardiovascular and weight-bearing exercise.  For more information, contact The Human Process at 847-556-6040.

InterPlay Returns to St. Mark's on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 - 9 p.m.  This is an opportunity for adults to shake out everyday stress.  Refresh and rejuvenate yourself.  Meet new people.  Deepen existing connections. Explore all of your awesomeness just as you are. And... the list goes on.  Those are some of the benefits you'll enjoy in these weekly, Tuesday night drop-in sessions. No prior InterPlay experience is required to attend.  Anyone and everyone can do the activities in this class.  So, come just as you are.  Sliding scale $8 - $15 per session. To learn more about InterPlay, visit them online here and here. You can also email event leader Jeff Breting at [email protected].
Evanston Creative Writing Group-  Do you like to write?  Do you like to be creative but find it challenging sometimes to put yourself on the page?  Do you enjoy receiving challenging prompts that spur your creativity?  The Evanston Creative Writing group is a creative prompt group designed to get you on the page and start the creative juices flowing.  Each meeting one member will act as the Prompt Master, offering a writing prompt like a picture, a first line, an object, or even a single word.  From these prompts members will write for fifteen to twenty minutes, creating a unique and original story, or perhaps creating something that will be the start of something bigger.  Please note that this is not a critique group.  We offer positive comments on what our authors create, understanding that the writing generated within our group is rough or "first-draft".  We accept all members, from those who are serious about writing to those who use the time offered to blow off some creative steam.  We meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month in the library at St. Mark's. For more information visit us online here
Evanston English Country Dance Group
This group meets every other Wednesday in Cunningham Hall. All dances are taught and prompted. We learn English Country dances devised from pre-1650 to the present. Jane Austin would recognize much of the dancing we do. Once a month, we have live music performed by Putting on Aires; the other Wednesdays, the music is from an extensive CD collection. You are welcome to come with or without a partner. Wear comfortable shoes (the type you would use to walk a mile) and casual clothing. We ask for a $5 ($3 for students) admittance fee to cover the rent and to buy music for the band. For further information, contact Tom Senior 847-606-8704, [email protected].
Soul Mates is an ongoing support group for those who have experienced the death of a spouse or life partner. This free group meets at NorthShore Hospice, 4901 Searle Parkway, Skokie on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 6:30 - 8 p.m.
Legacy is an ongoing support group for adults who have experienced the death of a parent. This free group meets at NorthShore Hospice, 4901 Searle Parkway, Skokie on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month from 6:30 - 8 p.m.
