Take Action Today! AB 2054 (Thurmond) Heads to Assembly Floor!

Progress! Thanks to your support, AB 2054 (Thurmond) passed out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee with unanimous bipartisan support. This week, the bill heads to a full vote of the Assembly.

Let's make sure they make the right decision!

AB 2054 (Thurmond) will help fight hunger by preparing California to implement federally funded Summer EBT for Children (SEBTC). SEBTC is proven to prevent food insecurity by providing nutrition assistance for the purchase of groceries when school is out of session and children lose access to school meals.

Here are a few ways you can help.

1) Send a Floor Alert:
As AB 2054 heads to the Assembly floor, we need your help to contact every member of the Assembly about this important legislation. Below is a sample floor alert that is ready for you to personalize. Please email or fax a copy to your Assemblymember and encourage his/her "aye" vote. Please share the sample floor alert with your partners!

Take Action Today! AB 2099 (Stone) Heads to Assembly Floor!

AB 2099 (Stone), the Safe Drinking Water Relief bill, will likely be heard on the Assembly Floor this week. There's still time to take action and let your Assemblymember know that you support AB 2099 and urge their "aye" vote!

In California communities where water is contaminated, residents must use bottled water for safe drinking and cooking. Households in poverty- including those on CalFresh- must use limited grocery dollars to buy water in addition to food, which further threatens food security and poses an inequitable hardship. AB 2099 would establish an efficient process to get relief to low-income Californians without access to safe drinking water. Take a look at the suggested actions below:

Send a Floor Alert: We've prepared a sample AB 2099 floor alert that is ready for you to personalize. Please email or fax a copy to your Assemblymember and encourage an "aye" vote. Don't forget to share the sample floor alert with partners!

Two Steps from Victory: Breakfast After the Bell

We've got exciting news! Last week, because of your strong support, the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education made a game-changing decision about school breakfast. The subcommittee voted to support a strategic, one-time investment of $4 million in startup and expansion grants (over four years) to help schools implement breakfast after the bell.

This is a thrilling step -- but there is more to be done!

In order for this investment to become a reality for California kids, the Senate and Assembly must include the $4 million in the 2016-17 budget act. State leaders are making budget decisions right now and your opinion matters.

What You Can Do:
Let California's budget leaders know that all kids deserve equitable access to school breakfast. The state should invest in Breakfast After the Bell. There are three important steps you can take today.
1) Letters - Please submit letters of support for the Breakfast After the Bell budget request. Please do submit an updated letter even if you have already expressed your support. Download a customizable sample letter and instructions for submitting your letter. doc

2) Phone calls - Make quick and easy calls to California budget leaders to voice your support for after-the-bell breakfast. A sample script and phone numbers are below.

"Hi, my name is __________. I live in __________, California. Four million dollars in startup and expansion grants to help schools implement after-the-bell breakfast will fight hunger, improve academic achievement, and support good health for hundreds of thousands of vulnerable students across California. Thank you."
