A final message for 2015-16 from our Principal, Mr. Althouse
Dear Fairmeadow Community,

To start this final principal's letter of the school year, I'd like to express my sincere admiration and appreciation to our Fairmeadow students.  I've had the honor and privilege to observe first-hand the kindness, optimism, perseverance, creativity, and hard work that defines our Fairmeadow community of learners.  The outstanding growth accomplished this year is evident in every classroom, visible in countless samples of student work.  Firebirds, thank you for your many contributions to each other and to our school this year.  I wish all of you a happy, healthy, and safe summer vacation from school!

The week ahead is filled with many exciting events to celebrate our students' growth, and to welcome the conclusion of the school year.  Please reach out to your child's teacher with any questions you may have about your classroom schedule for the week ahead.

This Wednesday, all Firebirds will participate in our annual Field Day.  With Field Day events ranging from Scooter Races to Sponge Races, Frisbee Golf to Hurdles, and Javelin to Jump Rope, students are sure to find many outdoor activities presented as a part of this fantastic community event.  Please remember our sun-safe ABC behaviors by sending your child to school with a hat and a water bottle on Wednesday, and sun block applied before school. (A - Avoid sun, B - sun Block, C - Cover up!).

This Thursday is the last day of school for students.  We congratulate our current fifth graders at the fifth grade promotion ceremony from 9:00 - 10:00 am on the Fairmeadow field.  Classes will be celebrating the conclusion of the school year in a variety of ways.  Thursday is an early dismissal day for students, with Kindergarten dismissing students at 12:00 pm, and 1st through 4th grade dismissing students at 1:40 pm.

For returning families, please mark your calendars for the following welcome back activities scheduled for the fall:

  • Wednesday, August 10th - Fairmeadow 101 Parent Information Presentation, 5:00-6:00 pm, Fairmeadow MP Room
  • Friday, August 12th - Welcome Back Social and Class Assignments, 4:30 - 7:00 pm, Fairmeadow Blacktop
  • Tuesday, August 16th - First Day of School, 8:30 am, Classrooms
I hope that your summer plans provide time for rest, relaxation, exploration, and joy.  For all children, it is important that reading and writing is still a part of their summer life.  So whether your child is a voracious daily reader or a reluctant reader looking for some time away from daily literacy activities, ensure that you model daily reading and writing habits, and provide for some time each day for your child to read for pleasure and capture their ideas in writing.  A simple summer journal is a great way to encourage daily writing, and it could be a fun exercise for everyone in your family to contribute to a record of summer, 2016.

We wish our graduating class of 5th graders and their families a smooth and successful transition into middle school.  For our returning and new Firebirds, we'll see you back at school on August 16th!

There will also be several open town hall meetings to review the results. If you have any questions regarding this survey, please contact Monica Ng, the study director, at  [email protected].

Screening of Beyond Measure

Sat, Jun 4, 2 - 4 PM,  1044 Middlefield Road, Redwood City Main Library

Beyond Measure  sets out to challenge the assumptions of our current education story. Rather than ask why our students fail to measure up, this film asks us all to reconsider the greater purpose of education. What if our education system valued personal growth over test scores? Put inquiry over mimicry? Encouraged passion over rankings? What if we decided that the purpose of school was not the transmission of facts or formulas, but the transformation of every student? And what if this paradigm-shift was driven not by politicians but by students, parents, and teachers

Sponsored by Girls Innovate, Outschool.org and Redwood City Library. Free and open the public.
