UGA's TIFT BUILDING REOPENS
RENOVATIONS CONTINUING ON TIFTON CAMPUS
The multimillion-dollar renovation of the historic H.H. Tift Building at the front of the University of Georgia's Tifton Campus is complete, and the building is back in service after sitting vacant for years.
In
2013, the
state had allocated
$4.7 million for the renovation.
"This project has been in the works for a long time," Dr. Joe West, assistant dean of the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, said then.
"It is important to preserve this important
part of our legacy. We wanted this building to return to its
original grandeur and to be reflective of the
stature of the
University of Georgia," West said. "This building will provide important space for the administration, staff and scientists to better do their jobs in support of campus activities and agriculture in general."
The Tift Building was built in 1922, four years after the Coastal Plain Experiment Station was founded in Tift County, thanks mostly to the efforts of H.H. Tift. Appointed by Gov. Hugh Dorsey, Tift was the first chairman of the board for the experiment station. He was instrumental in bringing the campus to Tifton to serve agriculture in South Georgia.
The project consisted of the

departmental offices, conference space and classrooms. The work included the addition of an elevator and exteriorramp, full system upgrades, a new sprinkler system, restoration of existing wood windows, select masonry repointing and replacement of the roof.
The existing building had largely avoided any upgrades during its lifetime, so much of the original historic fabric remained. The renovation project retained as much of the existing wood wainscot, wood ceiling, wood trim and plaster walls as feasible. Original doors, damaged by exposure when the building was derelict, were replicated. Consideration was given to routing of mechanical ductwork to maintain as much of the historic ceiling heights as possible.
The newly renovated Tift Building houses several campus support offices, including the assistant dean's office, business office, development office and campus public relations office. The campus's Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics is also being relocated to the renovated building.
West has said that the Tift Building renovation is part of a grand renovation plan for the front of the campus. Funding has already been appropriated for renovating the adjacent Animal and Dairy Sciences Building. A campus master plan and landscape plan are underway,
which
will result in an extensive renovation of the campus.
