SOFT SKILLS SEMINARS
It's Your Career! That's the focus of eight free soft skills sessions offered in partnership by the Blount County Public Library, the Adult Education Foundation of Blount County and the Blount County Chamber of Commerce that are scheduled over the next nine months.

With more and more millennials entering the workforce, employers have noticed many workers in a variety of professions are lacking in several areas, including problem solving, conflict resolution and critical observation. But, even though they possess the hard skills to get an interview, it's the important soft skills that will land the job and help them keep it.

All classes are conducted at the library located at 508 N. Cusick in Maryville and limited to 30 participants. Those interested must register online. A complete class description is located on the registration site. All classes run from 8-10 a.m. with networking beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Registrations are currently being accepted for the first three classes with the inaugural class entitled "Time Management Techniques to Improve Your Productivity at Work" set for Sept. 18. This class aims to help people gain techniques and tools to help them manage their time effectively and increase their overall productivity.

The other classes with open registration are "Can You Have It All? Achieving Work-Life Balance for Business and Personal Success" and "Working Smarter: Keys to Career Success," are set for Oct. 16 and Nov. 20, respectively.

Think local first + Buy local when you can = Being a local!

Several studies have shown that when you buy from locally owned business, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses.

REMEMBER WHEN
We go back 55 years to this week in 1960 when Elvis' "It's Now or Never" was in the middle of a five-week run atop the Billboard Music charts. Selling more than 20 million records, the song became number one in countries all around and was Presley's best selling single ever.

The Dialogue

This feature, a question-and-answer session with a new Blount County Chamber member, will appear every week. So here we go with our fifth installment with Kate Schriver, owner of the upcoming women's lifestyle boutique called Schriver's located at 106 E. Broadway, Maryville. Follow her progress leading up to the grand opening in March 2016 at www.facebook.com/schrivers.

Why are you in business? Schriver's is a women's lifestyle boutique that offers everything from contemporary casual apparel, home decor, accessories, and locally made items. We are here to provide our customer with quality products that they will love for years to come. We want to provide women of all ages a great boutique shopping experience. There are many boutiques that target college age women and younger, but we want all women within our community to feel like they can find something they love at Schriver's. We are also passionate about supporting our community which is why you will find a selection of hand made local items within the store.

Describe what the business does. We style all aspects of our customer's lives. At Schriver's they can purchase a great new outfit, jewelry, and something for their home and their best friend.

How did you get started in this business? My great grandfather, Robert Schriver and his brothers, opened the original Schriver's in Knoxville on Gay street in 1912. You can still see the Schriver's insignia in the window today! Schriver's then and now has stood for high quality merchandise and great customer service. I am taking that model, relocating, modernizing and reopening it in the Spring of 2016 in the heart of historic downtown Maryville.

How did you get the background and skills necessary to run this type of business? I received my degree in Fashion merchandising and management from the Art Institute of Nashville.

Whom do/did you seek advice before/during the operation of your business? Everyone I could! Being a family business I reached out to people who spent time in the original Schriver's and knew my great grandfather and his brothers. My grandmother, Julia Schriver, has been a huge inspiration to me.

Describe your customers. Our customers are women that range anywhere from their late 20s and above. We want to cater to all women within Blount County and the surrounding areas that have an interest in stylish clothing, accessories, and home decor.

What do you enjoy about running your business? I love the process. Learning the ins and outs of setting up a business, purchasing and renovating a space, working with vendors to purchase merchandise, and so on. It's all been wonderful. We cannot wait to meet everyone at our official opening in March 2016! Check out our Facebook page to keep up to date on building renovations, products, and weekly outfit inspiration!
