Now open: Exhibition exploring history of 18th-and 19th-century currency
WHO: The Historic New Orleans Collection
WHAT: "Money, Money, Money! Currency Holdings from The Historic New Orleans Collection," a new exhibition
WHEN: On view May 25-October 29, 2016
Tuesday - Saturday 9:30am - 4:30pm
WHERE: THNOC's Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres St. in the French Quarter
HOW: Admission is free. For more information, visit www.hnoc.org or call (504) 523-4662.
WHY: The Historic New Orleans Collection's holdings include a trove of historically significant pieces related to this region's economic history. The museum's latest exhibition, "Money, Money, Money! Currency Holdings from The Historic New Orleans Collection," invites visitors to explore more than 200 coins, paper notes, printing plates, political cartoons, counterfeit detectors, paintings and interactive features. These items demonstrate the numerous, sometimes bizarre, incarnations of money in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Prior to the Civil War, currency in the United States lacked cohesion. States, banks, companies, towns and all but two of Louisiana's parishes printed their own notes. From railroads to the Confederate treasury, institutions used money as a cultural canvas to illustrate their values. The currency on display depicts agriculture and industry, noted figures and even fantastic creatures such as mermaids. The imagery is sure to intrigue both the causal onlooker and the devoted collector.
The exhibition allows visitors to trace more than a century of tumultuous Louisiana history through the lens of currency. Notes connected to the rise of the French Company of the Indies, which ran the Louisiana colony from 1717 to 1731, and examples of Spanish coinage reflect early, often illicit inter-imperial trade. In the 19th century, with Louisiana's shift from colonial outpost to economic center, New Orleans's importance becomes evident in paper bills from banks that, with their enviable location on the Mississippi River, held prominent positions in local, national and international cotton and sugar markets. The cataclysmic effects of Civil War-era inflation are suggested by the many examples of local currency that ballooned, then dwindled during Reconstruction, when federal taxation on the printing of extra-national notes limited production.
"Money, Money, Money!" concludes with an early federal bill reminiscent of what's in visitors' own pockets-a codified currency with uniform qualities and unequivocally American symbolism.

Nevada Barr - BOAR ISLAND
Come meet New Orleans-based, New York Times bestselling author Nevada Barr presenting and signing her new novel, BOAR ISLAND, bringing National Park Ranger Anna Pigeon to the wild beauty of Acadia National Park.
Anna Pigeon, in her career as a National Park Service Ranger, has had to deal with all manner of crimes and misdemeanors, but cyber-bullying and stalking is a new one. The target is Elizabeth, the adopted teenage daughter of her friend Heath Jarrod. Elizabeth is driven to despair by the disgusting rumors spreading online and bullying texts. Until, one day, Heath finds her daughter Elizabeth in the midst of an unsuccessful suicide attempt. And then she calls in the cavalry---her aunt Gwen and her friend Anna Pigeon.
While they try to deal with the fragile state of affairs---and find the person behind the harassment---the three adults decide the best thing to do is to remove Elizabeth from the situation. Since Anna is about to start her new post as Acting Chief Ranger at Acadia National Park in Maine, the three will join her and stay at a house on the cliff of a small island near the park, Boar Island.
But the move east doesn't solve the problem. The stalker has followed them east. And Heath (a paraplegic) and Elizabeth aren't alone on the otherwise deserted island. At the same time, Anna has barely arrived at Acadia before a brutal murder is committed by a killer uncomfortably close to her.
BOAR ISLAND is a brilliant intertwining of past and present, of victims and killers, in a compelling novel that only Nevada Barr could write.
NEVADA BARR is a novelist, actor, and artist best known for herNew York Times bestselling, award-winning mystery series featuring Anna Pigeon. A former National Park Service Ranger, she currently lives with her husband in New Orleans.

CITY TO HOST NEW ORLEANS SUMMER CAREER PATHWAYS PROGRAM ORIENTATION
NEW ORLEANS - the City's Network for Economic Opportunity and JOB1 will kick off its New Orleans Summer Career Pathways Program orientation to provide training and employment opportunities in the advanced manufacturing and energy sectors.
In October 2014, the U.S. Department of Labor committed $8.2 million to support workforce development and training in New Orleans. In addition to education and skill training, participants will be provided with the wrap-around supportive services needed to increase completion and experience in real work settings to gain nationally recognized industry certifications.
. Each orientation will last from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

After Colin Campbell went on a short business trip abroad, he returned home to discover his wife of many years had moved out. No explanations. No second chances. She was gone and wasn't coming back. Shocked and heartbroken, Colin fell into a spiral of depression and loneliness.
Soon after, a friend told Colin about a dog in need of rescue-a neglected 140-pound Newfoundland Landseer, a breed renowned for its friendly nature and remarkable swimming abilities. Colin adopted the traumatized dog, brought him home and named him George. Both man and dog were heartbroken and lacking trust, but together, they learned how to share a space, how to socialize and, most of all, how to overcome their bad experiences. At the same time, Colin began to relive childhood memories of his beloved grandfather, a decorated war hero and a man who gave him hope when he needed it most.
Then everything changed. Colin was offered a great new job in Los Angeles, California. He took George with him and the pair began a new life together on L.A.'s sunny beaches. George became a fixture in his Hermosa Beach neighborhood, attracting attention from and giving affection to everyone he met, warming hearts both young and old. And when Colin headed to the beach to rekindle his love for surfing, and George encountered the ocean and a surfboard for the first time, he did a surprising thing-he jumped right on the board! Through surfing, George and Colin began a life-altering adventure and a deep healing process. As their story took them to exciting new heights, Colin learned how to follow George's lead, discovering that although he may have rescued George, in the end, it was George who rescued him.
FREE DAYS WITH GEORGE is an uplifting, inspirational story about the healing power of animals, and about leaving the past behind to embrace love, hope, and happiness.
Colin Campbell has worked as a marketing executive in both the United States and Canada. He has held senior roles with MacLaren McCann, MKTG, and the National Hockey League Players' Association. He has created and managed marketing and branded content programs for Nike, Mattel, Kraft, and General Motors, among others. Colin's syndicated radio show, Junior Hockey Magazine, has aired across Canada for the past twenty-four years. Colin and George live in downtown Toronto and escape as often as possible to the beaches of California and Nova Scotia to get their surfing fix.

NEW ORLEANS - Mayor Mitch Landrieu's Office of Economic Development will kick off another series of Business Information Sessions designed to connect local entrepreneurs and business owners with useful tools and resources to grow their businesses.
"These quarterly sessions are key to helping our local business owners and entrepreneurs thrive," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "When our businesses succeed, our economy gets stronger, more residents gain jobs and we grow the tax base that pays for essential City services."

District A Councilmember Susan G. Guidry said, "These information sessions help to assure the success of businesses, especially those that are just starting out. Giving business owners knowledge and connecting them to the right resources not only helps them to grow, but I t helps the community, as a whole. It is a win across the board."

THE WHOLE GRITTY CITY
Thursday, June 2
6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Patrick F. Taylor Library
The Whole Gritty City is a 90-minute documentary that plunges viewers into the world of three New Orleans school marching bands. The film follows children growing up in America's most musical city, and one of its most dangerous, as their band directors get them ready to perform in the Mardi Gras parades, and teach them to succeed and to survive.
Navigating the urban minefield through moments of setback, loss, discovery, and triumph, these children and their adult leaders reveal the power and resilience of a culture.

Mishima is the technique Miki Glasser uses to achieve the fine blue lines on the surface of her pots. Workshop participants will each be provided with a wet ceramic tile, and, using a needle tool, will inscribe drawings directly into the surface of the clay. A thin layer of blue glaze will be applied to the lines and scraped or wiped off of the surface, leaving only the delicate line trapped in the clay, embedded forever like a tattoo! Miki will fire the pieces and return them to the Ogden Museum for pick-up by workshop participants.
