Records continued to fall on Saturday night, like Golden State Warriors Klay Thompson's three-pointers through the basket. One-half of the Splash Brothers left his mark on the NBA's record books by knocking down 11-three pointers and amassing 41 points in the Warriors rebound against the Oklahoma City Thunder, helping to pull out a 108-101 victory after trailing most of the game. Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals comes to a climactic end on Monday night when the Warriors meet the Thunder at Oracle Arena at 6 p.m. Winner moves forward. United States

66th Avenue Address
--Submitted by a sports enthusiast inspired by
president Abraham Lincoln's
Gettysburg Address
Last week Raiders owner Mark Davis called for a unification of Raider Nation. It reminded me of a great American who dealt with similar issues when the nation he was leading was split into a bloody Civil War. If the bearded man from Illinois were a member of the Black Hole, he might have said this:
Fourscore and seven years ago his father brought forth in Oakland a new nation, conceived in Silver and Black and dedicated to the proposition that all men are not created equal unless they are Committed to Excellence. Now he is engaged in a great quest for a new home, testing whether Raider Nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure in Oakland. We are met on a great football field of that stadium war. We have come to dedicate a portion of the Coliseum Complex as a final resting place for those fans who gave their time, money and passion so that Raider Nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should "Just Stay, Baby!"
But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men and women who struggled to stay loyal when we were losers have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The media will little note or long remember the completely confusing comments ownership has made on journeys to other cities and commitments to those in power.
It is for us Northern California Raiders fans rather, to be dedicated to keeping our team where it was born and belongs forever. We take increased devotion to that cause for which so many gave their last full measure of Silver and Black devotion.
We here highly resolve that this fan base shall not have rooted in vain, that this Raider Nation, under the NFL shield, shall have a new birth of a stadium and that Raider football, of the fans, by the fans, for the future, shall not perish from this Oakland

Dare to Dream: How James Madison University Became Coed and Shocked the Basketball World
By Lou Campanelli
and Dave Newhouse
|
Former Cal basketball coach Lou Campanelli and local veteran sportswriter Dave Newhouse have co-authored a book chronicling Campanelli's accomplishments as a successful collegiate basketball coach. Campanelli started in 1972, when he arrived at a small teachers college known as Madison College in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. The name was changed to James Madison University and Lou built the basketball program into national prominence before coming to Cal and returning the Bears program into a Pac-10 winner.
Co-author Dave Newhouse will be making the following appearances: Friday, June 10, Berkeley Breakfast Club, 7 a.m. (general author talk); Saturday, June 25, Castro Valley Library, 2 p.m. (general author talk); Saturday, July 23, Montclair Library, Oakland, 3 p.m. (general author talk).
The book can be ordered at Amazon.com and at bookstores.

Granite Bay Rugby Wins First Championship
|
To win a championship in a sport as rough as rugby, you need players as tough as granite.
Prevailing over a field of the country's top 24 teams, the Granite Bay Rugby Club has won the national high school boys rugby championship (under age 19) for the first time in its short seven-year hist
ory
.
Granite Bay competes in what is considered the country's most challenging league of its type with elite high school teams from throughout Northern California, including
Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Sophomore Alex Evans breaks the KC Junior Blues defensive line with a powerful run in the semi-finals of the High School Boys National Championship Tournament.
|
The Granite Bay Grizzlies earned the crown on Saturday, May 21, after winning three consecutive games in the Boys High School Club National Championship invitational tournament held in Charlotte, North Carolina over three days.
With a roster filled with athletes from 13 area high schools, Granite Bay defeated the Chapel Hill Highlanders of North Carolina, 43-8, the Kansas City Junior Blues 25-10 in the semi-final, and Royal Irish Rugby (Indiana State Champions) in the final 1
4-8.
"I am very proud and happy for our players and coaches who accomplished what was the ultimate goal for every sports team and program," said Granite Bay Rugby head coach Jason Divine, who is a former junior national rugby player.
"We prepared to win the championship by competing in the most difficult league in the country, with more top-ranked high school teams th
an anywhere else in the nation."
In a relatively short time, Granite Bay is earning a reputation, like the legendary De La Salle High School football program in Concord, for sending players to top college programs.
In the last four years alone since Divine was hired, more than 60 Granite Bay players have been recruited by major colleges, such as the national champion University of California at Berkeley, Central Washington, Saint Mary's in Moraga, and the University of Arizona.
"One of my goals is to continue to place our players in the top rugby programs in the country," said Divine who lives in Sacramento.
Rugby's popularity continues to grow worldwide. In the U.S. alone, said Divine, there are over 450,000 youth and adult players and 3,000 rugby clubs.
"When I played, there were only 50 college rugby programs.
Now there are 500 programs, which underscores the rise in popularity of our sport," noted Divine.

|
Part of rugby's appeal, he said, is that every player is involved on every play: "You get to run with ball and tackle regardless of the position."
Divine predicts rugby's future in the U.S. is bright, with more professional teams coming in cities across the U.S.
Sacramento has a professional rugby team which is playing its inaugural season this year. Rugby is also in the Olympics this year for the first time in almost 100 years.
"Rugby is exploding like the 'wild west,' " said Divine.
"There is a huge opportunity for our sport in America and across the globe."
The current Granite Bay Rugby program was founded in 2008 and consists of high school boys from 13 high schools (Granite Bay, Rocklin, Roseville, Whitney, Oakmont, Del Oro, Woodcreek, Antelope, Casa, Folsom, Vista, Placer, Bella Vista). It competes in the country's most difficult league -- the Nor Cal Premier Conference, which includes top high school teams from Sacramento and the Bay Area.
